I'm crossposting this from my post on Charlie Weis Ate My Baby as I figured some Colts fans here might be interested in this. It's about the Colts' switch this year to non-striped socks.
Hi, my name is Jason and I have a strange obsession with sports uniforms. I blame it all on UniWatch: the hatred of Nike, the knowledge that the Detroit Tigers have two version of their 'D' logo, the instinct to judge any sports uniform I see (Pitt's road basketball unis? UGLY.). But the biggest thing is a love for striped socks. Really, tell me these don't kick ass. Oh and is Larry Johnson doing a Pete Maravich thing with his droopy socks?
Annnyway the whole point of this post is a striped sock issue that hits close to home for me - The Indianapolis Colts. For some reason in the 2006-07 season there was a minor uniform tweak: They changed the socks from having some really great stripes to now just solid blue over solid white. A travesty if you ask me.
This page has some excellent historical Baltimore Colts pictures. When I think historical Colts, I think striped socks. The 1958 championship team, Super Bowl V champions, Johnny U and Alan Ameche.
Side note: Browsing that gallery I noticed the Colts have had numerous sock styles over time. There were some periods with no stripes (Bert Rechichar sometime between '53 an '59), two stripes (Gene Lipscomb sometime between '56 and '60), two narrow stripes (Tom Matte sometime between '61 and '72) and one stripe (like the Johnny U picture linked above).
But back to the matter at hand.
Really. It's no contest, right?
