Real Numbers for Real Colts Fans

Courtesy of my brother,

Apparently he sent it to Mike and (Fat) Mike in the Morning:

I know you are 90 miles from Gillette stadium so ESPN must swing on the Pats cojones but I think the whole nation should hear a few facts.

  1. The pats play in, stat. speaking, the weakest division with only 8 wins (6 of which are the pats).....the colts play in the toughest division with 15 wins and only one loss outside of the division
  2. Yes the pats avg 38.3 pt giving up only 15.3 pt per game. the colts avg 32.8 pt and 17.6 given per game. that is 5.5 more points the pats put up and give 2.3 pts less. Though those are good numbers they are still close and lead me to my next point
  3. looking at the biased ESPN power rankings, the colts have thus far played much more difficult teams. matching up each week colts and pats with their opponents rankings (thus showing how strong a team they played) proved an astonishing fact proven by point #1. the pats played ranked teams of (14,3,29,18,25,3) for an avg of a 15 rank team each week. the colts played ranked teams of (6,14,11,8,9,6) for an avg of a 9 ranked team. Thus the colts play ON AVERAGE teams that are 1.7 times more difficult than the pats. So point 4
  4. adjusting for if the colts played the pats schedule they would have 1.7*32.8= 55.76 ppg and give up 17.6/1.7 = 10.36 ppg. henceforth, the colts put up 17.5 more points than the pats and give up 5 points less.
Take what you want out of this but I think the SUPER BOWL CHAMPS deserve a little more respect. They play harder teams, put up amazing numbers with injuries making them use CFL rookies as their running game. colts v pats is already decided. colts will win in the dome by, looking at the numbers, 10 points. Have you ever been to the dome? the noise messes with your mind!

Pats score meaningless touchdowns
New England has scored touchdowns at the end of every game.  They are meaningless to the final score but ESPN apparently loves them for that and it makes them look more impressive.  The Colts have been intent on winning games no matter what the score.

talk to me when they beat a defense
the chargers are dysfunctional.. and no other team the pats have beaten really have a good defense (yes dallas had wins, but they gave up a lot of points too)...

let's see how the pats are doing when they play a pittsburgh or ravens who can defend ... they let's see how many points are scored..

Cowboys have a good defense
not a great one, which it will take to stop Brady.

yep
Agreed. They have played some of the worst Ds in the nfl and while Dallas' D is not bad, it wasn't like the Cowboy offense helped them out by continually getting drive killing penalties so it was natural their D would not be able to keep it up at a decent level for that long. Also, they had their best CB out so that factored in.

If they can torch Indy, Pitts, Baltimore then I'll start to be impressed but until then their season so far has been like a top NCAA team going against junk and then running up the score late in 4th qtrs to go with it.

Numbers
Statistics don't win ball games.  As Chris Berman says, "That's why they play the game."

I personally believe that the game will be close, because the Patriots are better than they were last year, but then again, so are the Colts.

Any chance the Patriots can be moved to the NFC so the rest of the league recognizes the AFC Championship game as the REAL Super Bowl?   I remember last January, when we won the AFC Championship, I was so excited and amazed that we made it.  The Super Bowl was a "well, duh" win for the most part (Hester gave me pause, for a while).

Check it to pancakes! Pancakes!

check out the new poll
on nfl.com.  it asks who the second best team in the nfl is, and seeing as how the patriots arent up there, but the colts are, i guess they are inferring that the colts are second place

Wait
how does this play into the Pats fans' theory of a league-wide conspiracy against New England?

hilarious
That's funny. I love how all you need to do is run up the score and paste horrible teams (Dallas excluded) to get the media love.

I bet most of the media wonders why they even are playing a season since apparently the Patriots are a team handed down by God and the best ever.

I like how the media is ignoring that their D is weak and didn't really improve which has been in plain site the last 2 weeks with both Dallas and Cleveland easily moving the ball on them. Thomas does not cancel out the aging of all those old guys.

It'd make my year if Indy beats them 45-21 on Nov 4th just to shut the media up but I am sure they'd sue the excuse that NE was tired since their bye week is the week after that game.

oh...
I also find it amusing the poll is for 2nd best team and as if there should be any doubt that the Colts are 2nd best IF one feels NE is the best. Who else could one argue being better than the Colts?

It is as if some of these media people haven't even realized the season has started and they are still going on about how Indy lost some supposed key players and it will make them worse when reality has shown otherwise.

I am curious why the Colts seem to get passed off by a lot of the media. Win a SB, 5-0 yet again, have the best QB in the nfl, best receiving unit, one of the best RBs, and one of the best OLs, a fast D with perhaps the best safety in the league.

It is mind boggling. I swear that Indy could go win 3 SBs and they'd still be "under the radar" in the eyes of the media.

That NE passing game
is going to have to be great. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3067083

Morris may be out a month. With Maroney still hurting they may be down to their 3rd down back, Kevin Faulk.

More on numbers
My buddy and I are just talking about this NE crap (ie the media acting like their O is so amazing compared to everyone) so I peeped some stats. I first calculated what their O has scored and then what their O (and team) has scored without "junk" under 2 min running up the score TDs. I compared this with Indy. Here are the numbers:

Pats O has scored 209 overall pts for 34.8 ppg
Indy O has scored 157 overall for 31.4 ppg

Pats O with non under 2 min junk TDs (2 of those) is  195 pts for 32.5 ppg
Colts do not have a SINGLE offensive td under 2 mins. Hell, their latest is 10 mins left in the 4th.

So if you wish to include under 2 min junk scores by NE then you have 34.8ppg vs 31.4 ppg. If you wish to deduct them (and one should) then 32.5 compared to 31.4.

Yep, that Patriot offense is just way more impressive. Factor in the quality of defenses played and it is even more ridiculous.

NO question the Patriots O has been impressive but IMO Indy has been more impressive which everyone here already knows. The mere fact Indy has not scored an offensive TD with less than 10 mins left in a game speaks volumes of how that team is going about their business and not trying to impress the media with junk pts.

Note I left out some late questionable Patriot TDs that weren't needed (ie an early 4th qtr 45 yarder to moss vs the bills when they were up by 24) but I figured over 2 mins left I'd keep them in. If you take those out then Indy's offense has been better in terms of PPG.
