Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Tony Homo

He's being good this season, but WTF IS HE THINKING? 4 INTS, being 2 of them returned for TDs. The Bills should be winning it by a lot right now, but, hey, they are the Bills...

300 characters? How the fuck am I supposed to get 300 characters out of a simple act of bashing someone? Ahm... This way, I guess...

He has six turnovers now
Head over to blogging the boys, guys. What's going on over there is   hilarious.

They pulled it off
I'm disappointed. But I really don't like the timeout as their kicking the game winner move so I was a little happy to see the kicker handle it fine. If I was the kicker their the Bills sideline would be getting a suck it gesture after that.

Stealing this term from the FO discussion board
We're all just hating on Romo because we're Romophobic

by shake n bake on Oct 9, 2007 12:17 AM EDT reply actions

Romo was horrible, no doubt
but in spite of his suckiness through 3 qtrs he stepped up his game when the game was on the line.

That tells me he's the real deal. Most qbs would have been totally demoralized by committing 6 turnovers and their team would have no chance to win the game.

All young qbs have games like that, but how he bounces back is the most telling.

Huge props to Folk
That was huge. So much credit to him for hitting not one, but two Game Winning, career long FGs. Bet your glad you got rid of Vanderjagt.

by shake n bake on Oct 9, 2007 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

He bounced back ...
by throwing two more INTs and no TDs?

That ain't bouncing back, that's crumbling. Marion Barber made all your tough yards in the 4th quarter, not Romo.

Romo sucked balls in this game. There was nothing for him to bounce back to.

Romo = Grossman Jr.
That game last night was eerily familiar to the Monday night game last year between the Bears and the Cardinals.  They had no business winning that game, yet somehow they did.  Up until that point Grossman looked unstoppable, drawing comparisons to Brett Farve and was going to be the savior of the Bear's franchise...just like Romo.  Now look where he is...His false sense of confidence caught up with him, and now he is on the bench.

I understand how you're TRYING to draw something positive away from that sorry excuse for a game.  But the fact of the matter is that it's a loss if it wasn't against one of the worst teams in the league with a rookie 3rd round QB running the show.  Buffalo had the worst ranked pass defense in the league going into that game. Romo should have had a field day and he stunk up the joint.

And no, not all young QBs (not named Rex Grossman) turn the ball over 6 times in a game.  Young QBs have bad games, but not THAT bad of games against THAT bad of a team.

Romo still has only 1 win against a +.500 football team, and he didn't even play well in that game.

by rudy0498 on Oct 9, 2007 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

not true
there have been HOF qbs that have thrown for 5 or 6 INTs in a game. Sometimes you just shit the bed, its how you come back from it that tells you what kind of player you are.

I guess we'll find out against the Pats.

by Terry @ Stampede Blue on Oct 10, 2007 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions

He overcome..........
Romo may have been horrible, but he DID keep it together in the fourth quarter and orchestrated a 80 yard drive for a TD and almost passed for the two point conversion. Romo will be just fine.

by memphiscat @ Stampede Blue on Oct 9, 2007 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea...
And he almost threw INT #6 on that drive, except it was dropped.

by the21eraser on Oct 9, 2007 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah
Which wasn't exactly his fault due to Barber letting it go right through his hands.  But it doesn't matter anyways, it wasn't an interception, and he did take them down the field to score.
Go Colts!

by KingRichard on Oct 9, 2007 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Rex Grossman...
also 'recovered' from his mistakes last year in the game against Arizona and won a game he should not have. I give more credit to the special teams for recovering the onside kick and for Folk making a 53 yard FG twice. Without the onside, Romo has no shot at redemption and there would be even more talk today about how horrible he was.

'07 Cowboys = '06 Bears

P.S. I do want to say I think this is the best case scenario though. Dallas gets a wake-up call the week before the New England game, realizing they should not have won that game and it will not fly against the Pats, which I hope makes them prepare even better this week and hopefully pull off the upset!

by Colt4Life on Oct 9, 2007 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

well
First off, these comparisons of Romo to Grossman are fucking laughable.  Are you people really that blinded by your biasness you can't see the differences?  Why don't you let the guy play some more games before you start lobbing him into groups and expect him to fail.  Jesus, any open-minded FOOTBALL fan would be interested in seeing what else he can do.

Btw, claiming that Dallas beating New England would be an upset is absurd.  They are both 5-0, regardless of who they've played, and thats the end of it.  No one team can be proven "better", it's all just opinion.  Obviously the "better" team that night will win the game.

Go Colts!

by KingRichard on Oct 9, 2007 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Didn't compare...
Did I say Rex Grossman is just like Tony Romo? No. I said Rex Grossman also won a game he had no business winning, just like Romo did last night. I never once compared their skills. It is obvious Romo is a good QB, but I think his star has ascended a little too quickly.

And upset, well yes, it would be an upset if Dallas beats New England. New England have already been crowned the Champs, all the experts will agree that NE is the better team, and Vegas seems to think so as well:

Outcome      Spread
NEW ENGLAND     -4.5
DALLAS             +4.5

And if you are using your undefeated logic as why they are even, then I would think the Colts should be a unanimous #1 according to everyone since they are the SB Champs and have won 10 in a row dating back to last year.

by Colt4Life on Oct 9, 2007 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Not too mention....
Dallas is an NFC team and I think it is obvious there is a fairly large gap between the top of the NFC vs. top of the AFC. That spread actually reads NE -7.5 DAL 7.5 if the home team usually gets 3 points for home field. Seems like it would be an upset to me.

by Colt4Life on Oct 9, 2007 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

heh
The implication was there that you were indeed comparing Romo to Grossman (this was also directed at a few others who posted before you).  You just didn't come right out and say it.  Besides, his "celebrity" not star has ascended but who's fault is that?  Not mine or his.  He just plays the game and people talk.  I mean, the NFL is nationally televised, alot of people are going to see him playing.

I don't care what wannabe sports analysts have to say about the game, or whatever the bookies are putting the spread.  There's no grounds for an "upset" in logical terms.  They are both undefeated, and both have played shitty teams, END OF DISCUSSION.

The Colts have nothing to do with this discussion, I don't even know why you are bringing them up.  Considering I am a Colts fan and all.

Go Colts!

by KingRichard on Oct 9, 2007 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What's more laughable?
That I compared him to Rex Grossman, or that most people are comparing him to Brett Favre after so few starts?  I have no personal bias against either of them, although it does chap my ass a little bit that Cowboy's homers like Terry are already putting him in the hall of fame when he hasn't even played a full season yet.  I don't WANT him to fail.  It's just Deja Vu.

I believe that he and Grossman have the same fatal flaw (if you want to call it that).  It's their inability to handle the hype, and the false confidence that's created by trying to live up to it.  When good QBs make mistakes, they buckle down and focus that much more to minimize the damage.  That's not what these guys do.  They make a mistake, get desperate, and try to make up for on every throw after that.  And as a result their mistakes cascade out of control.

Maybe he'll learn, maybe he won't.  But at this point in his career, he's closer to being Rex than Brett.  In reality he'll probably end up somewhere in between.  But with so many people on the Romo-wagon, I can't help but play devil's advocate.  That's what these blogs are all about after all.

Why do you even care what people on tv say?  I thought it was common knowledge they are all just full of shit and are trying to make something out of nothing.  I don't listen to analysts or anyone else when I formulate an opinion on a player, which is how it should be.  I would rather you just hate the guy for hating him, instead of hating him because of all these other people who talk about him, you know?  But whatever, it's your call.

Just like you said, he has yet to play a full season.  And within the 14 or however many games he's played, he's hard far more GOOD ones than BAD ones.  Which isn't the case for Grossman.  Grossman played all of 4 games good last year, the rest of the season was a shitstorm of horrible play.

There's just something different about Romo when I watch him play.  Even though he sucked it up last night, he was/is able to actually do something positive to at least salvage a disaster.  Whenver Grossman was having a shit day, it just got progressively worse until there was no hope at all.

Honestly, I think the whole comparison deal is bs.  Everyone plays different, it's all just a waste of time.

Go Colts!

by KingRichard on Oct 9, 2007 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't hate they guy
and I am forming my own opinion about him.  I drew that comparison out of my own observations, not based on what anyone else has said.

Yes, he has had more good games than bad ones.  But once again, he's only beaten one team over .500, and didn't play very well in that game.

Everyone plays different, but they also share certain traits.  He has a lot of very good qualities, and has all the physical tools needed to be successful.  But at this point in his career he shares the very same trait that was the downfall of Grossman.  Maybe he doesn't share it to the same degree, but it doesn't mean they aren't similar.  Those 5 INTs weren't unrelated mistakes, and anyone watching that game could see that.  They were compounded mistakes, and it's all because he's so concerned with living up to the hype instead of just playing within himself.  It's the classic Shane Falco "quicksand" theory.

Maybe he'll eventually learn not to let they hype affect him.  Maybe he won't.  That's yet to be determined.  All I know is that Rex Grossman couldn't, and it's worth considering that maybe Romo won't be able to either.

pure dumb luck
pure dumb luck strikes again... how bad are the bills that their D gives them 6 turnovers and they still can't win..

this doesn't look good though for dallas' chances against the pats.

oculd you imagine what we would do to dallas if they had 6 turnovers in a game against us???

by bluegirl on Oct 9, 2007 7:18 AM EDT reply actions

afc/nfc
i know people hate hearing about the divide between the afc/nfc, but c'mon. the bucs are supposedly a powerhouse and resurgent team and the colts level them.  the cowboys are outgunning their opponents nad the bills take it to the wire and should have had that game put away long before the fourth quarter.

the cowboys are NOT as good as advertised.  they haven't played anyone worth a damn.  i do hope they torch the pats, but the 'boys are beating up on poor teams and probably letting their success get to their heads.

by tenyardfight on Oct 9, 2007 8:51 AM EDT reply actions

aren't the pats beating up on poor teams, too?

should be interesting to see how it works out in the dallas/pats game.  dallas at home should give them a big advantage, it seemed like the buffalo crowd was really into it.  plus it looked like dallas came into that game thinking it was practically a bye week.

i'm rooting for dallas so i'm trying to stay optimistic.  =P

I don't know
If Dallas win this game, they'd be in the same level as the Pats for the regular ESPN guy. That would mean 2 times more of 'perfect team' crap.

The Pats certainly are...
beating up on inferior teams. They get to play the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins 2x. Those teams are a combined 2-13!!!

The AFC South isn't the joke it used to be. Those teams are a combined (other than the Colts)9-4.

I tend to believe that the more tough games you play, the better prepared you are. Look what happened to the Colts in '05 when we dominated our cupcake schedule, just like the Pats have this year.

by Colt4Life on Oct 9, 2007 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Shit
I really don't know how the Bills lost this game. Edwards was maybe the biggest reasons why they lost. He was playing fine, until that stupid Int. That's a rookie's mistake. Throwing 5 INTs ain't a rookie's mistake. It's something else. I hope that Romo bounce back. He can become a very, very good QB, and a fun guy to watch. But last night was just plain silly from him.

Baseless Patriot love
ESPN, Eternally Sucking Patriots Nuts....even if the Pats lose to the Boys, ESPN will be saying, "oh how did the Patriots lose this game" and discussing their fall from grace. They'll still dominate the coverage. ESPN is owned by Disney, its only natural they support the most Mikey Mouse club in the league. As for the Cowboys, cinderella story. They were exposed last night by a rookie qb and a dinged up defense. AFC/NFC parity is a joke and "any given sunday" is a movie. Colts SHOULD be the best in the league by default, but I actually prefer second place ranking. Its always nice to put a cleat mark in a Patriot ass on the way to the top!

by bicepbob21 on Oct 9, 2007 12:46 PM EDT reply actions

um...
The Cowboys defense actually played very good.  Edwards was only 23/31 for 176 yards and 0 tds.  Not to mention they only allowed 76 rushing yards, and 2 field goals.  That's nothing to brag about.

Nothing to brag about on Buffalo's part.
Go Colts!

by KingRichard on Oct 9, 2007 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

yes well...
Point is Buffalo is a 1-4 AFC team with a rookie QB that controlled the ball for over half the game against the class of the NFC. Not to mention the fact that 2/3 of Buffalo's touchdowns came off of D. In this case time of possession was a measure of an offense's effectiveness as well. I just don't think its legit to group the Cowboys with the elite teams of the AFC (Indy, Pittsburg, and New England; in that particular order).
