Marvin's Career Over?

Occasionally, I hear inside things about the Colts. There is a terrible, un-confirmed rumor that #88 may retire due to injury. I don't know if anyone else has heard that, but i have heard it from two seperate sources. I pray it's not true, but I think I owe it to our community here, to passing it on. I hope it's b.s., but where there's smoke...........

Ugh
I've heard speculation about that, but I certainly hope not. It would be easier to speculate if the Colts hadn't turned so secretive about injuries. As I understand it, it's a bone bruise, which can take 6-8 weeks to heal. So although he's been out a while, it's still within the time frame. Add to that a couple of easier games coming up and the need to have Marvin healthy for the playoffs, and I can see why the Colts are in no hurry to rush him back (learned their lesson last year with Sanders).

As for Marvin himself saying, "I've had enough," I would be surprised. He's never struck me as the kind of guy who puts records first, but nonetheless I'd think he'd want to see if he could break some of the very reachable all-time marks. He's been banged up a bit in the past, but it's not like he's been struggling with debilitating injuries for years, or going through repeated grueling rehabs.

It would be a shame...
if #88 had to hang up the cleats. I too, have heard those rumors. Something to the affect that, playing further could lead to a life of pain. Marvin has always been one of my favorite non Patriots. He seems to have as much class as talent. I hope that he can get back on the field soon. What a tough year for the Colts...Still 7-2  is not a very bad record. Good luck to all of the injured Colts...

I don't believe any
of the Marvin's out for the season or longer. If he wasn't going to be back this year he would have been put on IR weeks ago. The Colts are being forced to cut backups that actually see the field and use players on both sides of the ball in practice because of all the injured players. They wouldn't waste a roster spot by keeping Marvin off the IR for no good reason.

I'm with you s & b
I have been adhering to that logic as well, but Marvin is a special case, and I think it is worthy of consideration that Polian would treat his case differently. I've got my fingers crossed, but if he quit, well we have no one to pick up the slack for a future hall of famer. I'd have consider getting out my samurai sword and commiting Hari Kari.

All that being said, we are going to anhillate the Chiefs today and get back on track......

Harrison is old
just like Terry Glenn who is battling the same type of injury. At that age its tough to come back with that type of injury because with those small guys, all the have is their speed and quickness, if that is compromised, they become very average.

no $hit?
and thanks for bringing one of your team's players into the conversation.
i had no idea how to relate this to the cowdungs, but now i do.
thanks

Besides the fact ...
Besides the fact that Terry Glenn sucks, and Marvin Harrison is easily a top-5 ALL TIME receiver, yeah that comparison is valid.

Moron.

by PaytonMenning on Nov 19, 2007 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

If you actually think Glenn sucks
then you're the freakin moron, but then I always knew that, this statement only confirms it more.

by Terry @ Stampede Blue on Nov 19, 2007 9:07 AM EST up reply actions

Im with him
Glenn is a Solid #2 and was once a Solid #1. The Comparison was made, cuase they have a similar injury, play the same position, and are of similar age.

Just cause Harrison is better doesn't me he recovers better. His bones bruise and break same as the 2nd string punter.

by ZTurgeon on Nov 19, 2007 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

Terry Glenn
He doesn't "suck," but he's clearly a bust. He was a top draft pick in 1995 and has come no where close to what his draft selection warranted. There is also no comparison between Marvin and Terry.

Hell, there's no comparison between Marvin and TO. The only people who would say TO is better than Marvin are Cowboys fans, and who gives a fuk what they think. ;)

If Marvin Harrison retired right now, he's a first ballot HOFer and the best WR this league has ever seen not named Jerry Rice. No debate. No argument. Anyone who disagrees simply doesn't know football, and voids any and all rights to discuss the subject.

Oh, and if they persist they void the rights to any all future children they spawn. That's all. ;)

very funny BBS, you're an absolute riot
I'd take T.O. over Harrison anyday simply because the man can't be covered and I've seen Harrison covered plenty of times, not to mention he blocks 100 times better.

I wouldn't classify Glenn as a bust unless you want to include injury riddled careers as busts. From a pure talent standpoint, Glenn is every bit as good as Harrison, the difference between the 2 is that Harrison has remained healthy his entire career while Glenn has been injured most of his. It also didn't hurt Harrison that he had Manning throwing passes either.

Thats why Harrison is a future HOF and Glenn will just be considered a very good receiver. Injuries can really devastate a career and it did with Glenn.

Two things ...
  1. I've seen numerous polls where cornerbacks always select Marvin as the best receiver to in football. I'll take their word for it over any stupid opinion you have.
  2. Terry Glenn does suck. He stubs his toe and he's out. Marvin played an entire season with a broken hand! There is no comparison.

2 more things
  1. You're a freakin moron
  2. If you judge players by their propensity to get hurt, then I guess you're saying Bob Sanders really sucks, although I disagree.

only with your resident idiot
Payton Menning, but I guess every blog has to have a community moron.

by Terry @ Stampede Blue on Nov 21, 2007 9:10 AM EST up reply actions

That makes you ...
the community moron then? Seeing as I'm the resident idiot. I'm ok with that.

Bob Sanders does not suck, because he causes his injuries himself by hitting other players so hard. Bob is otherwise invulnerable.

It does suck having Bob out so much. Terry misses games for stupid things like turf toe.

Bob Sanders sneers at turf toe.

Playing It Safe
I think shake n bake is right. I mean, they knew Freeney was out for the season almost immediately after the San Diego game and put him on IR. I'm pretty sure that the Colts' braintrust would put Harrison on IR if they knew he wasn't coming back.

On another, slightly related note: we keep hearing Dungy say things like "He could play if this were a playoff game". Well, let's see here. In the last two weeks we dropped a game to New England, which could determine whether we play in Indy or Foxboro if we make the AFC Championship, and another to San Diego which put us behind Pittsburgh for the AFC's #2 seed. Oh yeah, and both of those put Jacksonville and Tennessee only a game back, and right now BOTH would be in the playoffs.

At what point do you say "We're playing for our lives here, suck it up and get out there"?

"Hey, if you want me to come here, I want to come here. But if you don't, I'm going to beat your butt for 15 years playing in the AFC." -Peyton Manning-

Hmmm...
I would say they only would think that if they started to lose many in a row. Yes, it sucks to have seen them lose those two games they could have EASILY (and should have) won and marvin being out there would have helped but I get their mentality of not wanting him to play until it is do or die and it isn't there yet. I think last seasons' playoffs made Dungy and the team more confident in not having to get the bye and even get homefield so while they would like that they won't risk losing a key player for the season to get it. Also, I am sure the Steelers of 05 also helped prove that homefield/bye isn't the key thing for the playoffs.

I would be surprised if Marvin plays before the playoffs. Maybe he will play a bit in the last 2 games just to shake some rust off but I don't see him playing before then unless the Colts somehow lost a few more games and were in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.

IMO this team can win anywhere so if they actually had to play every playoff game on the road then meh, they can do it if they are healthy. However, i do hope they get the 2nd see and the bye.

back for divisional games
marvin and others will be back for the divisional games... dungy's biggest priority is to win the division and get into the playoffs... after that it is a new season.. remember marvin and ugoh were in for at least part of the jags game even though they had been hurt the week before.. .that tells me they can play and dungy is playing it safe...  winning our last 3 divisional games guarantees us the division and probably the 2nd or 3rd seed (though with the injuries the 2nd seed and the buy would probably really help)

by bluegirl on Nov 19, 2007 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

No...
The only thing we're guaranteed is getting 8 wins.  We could go 8-8 and miss the playoffs.

Nothing is guaranteed in this league.

by the21eraser on Nov 19, 2007 11:13 AM EST up reply actions

if we win ..
if we win the 3 remaining divisional games that would pretty much guarantee us the division... i was referring to the upcoming games ...not the ones we have already won...  dungy's main goal each season is to win the division

by bluegirl on Nov 19, 2007 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

yea...
totally misread what you were writing

sorry

well
We're the #2 seed as of right now since Shittsburgh lost today.

bone bruise
having bruised my tailbone about the same time marvin got his knee hurt... yes it takes this long to heal bone bruises and it hurts like a bitch and there isn't anything you can do but let it heal.. .. and if you push it, is just gets worse again...  but on the bright side, once it is healed there are no lingering effects...

by bluegirl on Nov 18, 2007 5:04 PM EST reply actions

Harrison
Is it possible for the Colts to sign Harrison's kids to contracts now? What about Manning's kids? Can we sign an as-yet-to-be-determined sperm and egg to a 10 year, $25 million contract?
