Colts lose 24-20

Hard fought, great game. This game showed that the two best teams in the NFL, right now, are New England and Indianapolis. Hats off to the Patriots. Colts were more physical, but in the end the injuries just piled up, and the Pats made the plays in the fourth when they needed them. Despite the lose, the defense played outstanding. And despite missing Marvin and Tony Ugoh, the offense was tough. Joseph Addai is a stud.

All in all, game lived up to the hype. Thanks to all of you who posted in the open thread. These two teams will play again this season, and that match-up's outcome will be different.

Go Colts!

I agree, this was a great game
looks like the AFC Championship game will be at Gilette Stadium, probably in the snow.

Good luck with that.

by Terry on Nov 4, 2007 7:34 PM EST   0 recs

you mean like last time it was at gilette?
when the colts beat them? i'm not worried, the colts are getting better, the pats are getting older and slower.  without Harrison and even Gonzalez for most of the game, they just didn't have the weapons in the air to get a long drive done in the last 3 minutes.  the colts showed that the patriots are beatable, running all over them in the first half.  if they would have converted a few of their red zone drives, the game would have been over even with the last 2 drives that the patriots put together.  i'll look forward to a full healthy roster next time around, a few of the 35+ year old patriots will start getting injured here fairly soon

Retarded comment
Yep because the snow limits the passing game the most and magically Jesus Brady and Co will be able to defy simple logic and go pass happy in it. Yep, that's it.

A team that does well in the snow is a team like Indy that has a good rush game. Is there any idiot in  the football watching public who thinks NE has a better rushing attack?

It is mind boggling how stupid people are to not see that the Pats are like the Colts of 04 and Colts are like the 04 Pats. I guess the season/playoffs need to play out for the idiots out there to grasp this.

I'd love to see that game be in snowy conditions so Indy can pound the ball on the Pats and idiots like you can be left dumbfounded.

If the Colts pass-centric O got shut down in the playoff games in the snow then why would the Pats pass-centric O magically be any better? THINK BEFORE YOU POST.

Well
I lived in Boston (that's why I'm a Red Sox fan) for a while, so I don't really hate the Pats. I hate the media around the team. But I really, really love the Colts. I just love this team. And... Damn... When the game was 20-10, I thought it was over. Fuck. I guess I yelled "Brady, you suck big fat hairy cojones" a little too soon.

It's just not fair.

If only...
the injury bug didn't catch up to us.  The offense started to sputter and was giving the ball back, and our defense was getting tired at the end of the third quarter.  They went balls to the wall, and if we were healthy our offense would have been so much better.  That Gonzalez drop in the endzone was something Harrison would have caught, and Moorehead in as 2nd reciever?  That was just so, so sad.
Go Colts!

Harrison
I just hope he can comeback. Wayne can't be the only WR. Moorehead and Gonzalez are good as 3rd WR guys. Without Harrison, it seems that the Colts put too much on Addai and Wayne.

BTW ...
Remember all those guys wanting to draft defense when we took Wayne?

How's that decision look right about now? Wish I could change my handle to "InPolianWeTrust" ...

What a classy guy, that Belichick!
Check out the warm and heartfelt greeting that Bill "classy guy" Belichick has for Tony Dungy.

(It's in Quicktime, but then that's all Belichick had time for anyway apparently.)

Let me clarify...
...I'm not saying that the Pats didn't earn the win. They did, and it was as wonderfully hard-fought as all the hype implied it would be. These two teams are way beyond the rest (at least at this point). My comment on Belichick is that he would at least score some human being points if he would make eye contact with other coaches, especially with impeccably decent ones like Dungy.

What say we just skip the NFC v AFC rule for the superbowl and allow the Pats and Colts to meet up again in the Big One???

(I love football!!)

Sheesh
Nice to see the Colts D totally fall apart in that 4th qtr and for the Colts O-Line to KILL their last two drives. Pathetic.

Also I love how the kick coverage team yet again sucked. How many focking years do they have to keep sucking before they fix it? Welker killed them on those punt returns in the 4th.

Anyway, congrats to the Pats with their great 4th qtr comeback and great pressure late in the game which was something the Colts D couldn't do. The Colts showed they had the better D for 3qtrs but sadly int he 4th it went back to the old days with the Colts D looking like shit and the Pats D looking very impressive.

The only positives of this game were:

-Brady tossing 2 ints

-Pats being held under 30 pts

-Pats barely winning so people can clue in that they can't simply blow out anyone just because they may want to. THE OTHER TEAM MATTERS and the Pats should be thankful they escaped with this win.

-The Colts being without 4 starters all game and then Gonzo for most of the game yet still almost winning despite their crappy offensive performance.

I have confidence that if they face each other again in the playoffs and the Colts are healthy that they will win even if (most likely) it is in Foxborough. Not to take anything away from the Pats since they DID win and not their problem who was or wasn't playing for the Colts but the fact the Colts didn't have their LT and best WR in the game (and then the 3rd WR going out early) clearly factored into this and I am positive it will be different with those guys healthy. I just have to believe that with Marvin in there the Colts' crappy goal to go offense would have been better and turning the two FGs into TDs. Pats fans will of course slam the injury talk but if Moss was injured wtf would the Pats have done? Nothing...he was the reason why they won. That is what has been key to the Pats so far this year- they have stayed quite healthy. If Moss were to go down or any of their defensive players (remember the colts were without two starting LBs today) then I am sure they'd have some adversity.

This game should have been a runaway by the Colts but sadly their O was quite garbage and continually blew great opportunities early on. Oh well.

How about the Colts get in sync on O because IMO they have not been in-sync for a complete game all year. Too many dropped passes (at least 4 today to go with the 6 last week), questionable play calls, some iffy throws by Manning. Regardless of the offense having the numbers, they have been off so far this season. Logic would say that at some point they will get firing like the Colts of old but wtf knows....

I still do not believe the Pats are the better team.

by Rob L on Nov 4, 2007 8:13 PM EST   0 recs

Let's give them their due...
The Patriots won a tough road game against what might be the only other team in the NFL that could realistically go toe to toe with them. Congratulations to the Patriots and their fans. They do have bragging rights to being the best team in the NFL right now, and very likely all the way until the playoffs start.

I still think that our Colts will regroup, heal up, make the adjustments, and finish with a Superbowl win.

Exciting, tough game. The rivalry continues!

by wsexson on Nov 4, 2007 8:18 PM EST   0 recs

The D...
did everything and more that could be expected of them. They did not come apart in the 4th quarter--you simply cannot totally prevent a good offense from scoring for the entire game.  All they needed was Manning and crew to do SOMETHING. Which they didn't.  One 8 minute drive in the third quarter would have been enough to wear out those Pats. They stopped being able to run the ball and then it followed that they weren't abe to pass it.

I personally think the O-line should bear most of the blame.

And, just like last week--the defense held this team in there the entire game.

by will on Nov 4, 2007 8:20 PM EST   0 recs

I agree it wasn't the defense at fault
To me the question is was it special teams or the offense in the 4th? I guess it was both.

How big was not having Ugoh? (seriously, this is not a rhetorical question)

by wsexson on Nov 4, 2007 8:25 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Question about Ugoh
All the good feelings I had for Charlie Johnson after he stepped in during the Superbowl, Gone. That's how big losing Ugoh was.

by shake n bake on Nov 4, 2007 8:32 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

What is with special teams?
We usually got the ball inside the 20, while the Pats got the ball close to the 40.  Boy, did they have an off night.
Go Colts!

by Marked Hoosier on Nov 4, 2007 8:29 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Defense was awesome.
Two picks.  After Manning's interception, they forced the Pats back out of field goal range forcing a punt right back.  The offense put them back on the field too much, and they tired out.  They were playing with so much energy so long... It's a shame we didn't win the game for their effort.

When Manning hit the recievers, they dropped the ball.  The max pressure the Pats threw in at the end of the game looked the same as the championship game, but this time no one got open quickly so Manning took sacks... and Ugoh is so much better blocking to the left on runs for Addai than Johnson.

Go Colts!

Question
Why was 5'8" Tim Jennings on Moss for nearly every play? Does anyone think that's a good idea. I'm normal one of the first to say trust Dungy but, Why would you match them up.

Jennings is very talented but short and raw, so I don't want him near Moss. -me @ Pats Pulpit before the game

by shake n bake on Nov 4, 2007 8:24 PM EST   0 recs

well damn
congrats to the pats.  they took advantage of the colts' mistakes and made it happen.  as a colts fan, this gives me hope: wel ost only by four points wiht our left tackle out, our star receiver out, and then his back up out most of the game.  the pats are not unbeatable and brady will crumble under pressure.  if the colts had converted eithe field goal into a td, which they would have with either ugoh or harrison, thisgame owuld have changed. but that's not hteo rder of the day, so congrats ot the patriot acts.  we'll see you in foxboro unless you fal to the steelers (Which may happen..they do like to tackle at the knees).

The better team won......................
Last season the Colts lost to Dallas, Tennessee, Jacksonville and Houston, all inferior teams. Tonight they were defeated by a superior team, by defeating the Colts, the Pats proved it. I will admit the truth, the Pats are the very best team in the NFL, and I hope they go 16-0. I remember when Miami had a perfect season(yes I am that old), back then it was a 14 game regular season, thus it is harder to do now and I did not think I would ever see it happen again, but I think the Pats have a very good chance of doing it. They just beat probably the only team that could stop them. It always hurts to lose, but to me, it's not so hard to take when you know the best team won, not an inferior one.
That year of the 1972 Dolphins schedule, they played New England twice, beating them 52-0(talk about running up the score!)on 11/12/72 and 37-21 on 12/3/72. I know this means nothing, just sharing some history.

Goats
I think it's clear that Charlie Johnson was man-handled and absolutely contributed to the loss. Tim Jennings looked horrible I thought. Question is, was this game and home field advantage not worth putting our four starters that missed out there? Unquestionably the loss can be attributed to the Coaching decision to sit these guys (and to kick field goals on the 2!) Sorry, I think the game was slightly mishandled from the start. The Colts did do a good job of handling things for awhile, but all in all we just didn't have the total package tonight.

Not whining
I wasn't whining, just venting frustrations.  It sucks when you are on your way to the game and you find out that your 2 starting LBers, your starting LT, and your hall of fame WR are all out.  Especially when you have a feeling that some of them maybe could have gone, and the coaches were being a little overly cautious.  However, they probably know what they are doing, and it was probably the right decision.  I'm sure NE fans would have felt the same frustrations if Light, Thomas, Vrabel and Moss were out.  Injuries are part of the game, but that doesn't mean it doesn't suck when your team is hit by the injury bug.  No excuses though - I'm not saying we would have won otherwise.  I just hope if we play again BOTH teams are fully healthy.

common people
there is a lot to digest from this game. but the colts were beaten. there are no excuses, the new england patriots were the better football team today.
it's not worth your time to stress and argue over different message boards about it.
ok that's all i've got.
hopefully ugoh and marvin will be around in january.
peace

Agreed
We had the players we had, and they had the ones they had. They won.

Just one regular season game here, folks.

Hope that we are at full strength for the playoffs!

by wsexson on Nov 4, 2007 8:54 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Hell of a game
If we can hold their offense like this minus two starting linebackers and missing ugoh harrison and gonzalez, i cant wait to see them in the playoffs

by biosBSOD on Nov 4, 2007 9:20 PM EST   0 recs

A loss is a loss
While it sucks that we lost, it does give us the flexibility to make sure our players are health for the playoffs.  We don't have to win every game the rest of the year to get home field advantage, the Pats do save for the last game.  The injuries we had were a major factor in this game (not to make excuses).  Defensively, with Harrison out and Gonzalez gone, the Pats were able to take away Reggie Wayne and play the run more aggressively.  With our 2 linebackers out, we were forced to play Tim Jennings on Moss and there is no way that matchup works for the Colts.  Despite all of that, the Pats only won by 4 points and we were leading by 10 with 9 minutes left in the game.  I think our offense is better suited to play outside than the Pats are, and if we have our receivers we can control the ball and run those long clock killing drives.

Anyway, great win for the Pats, congratulations to them and they should do everything in their power to finish the regular season unbeaten.  Then a well rested, healthy Colts team will be waiting for them in the playoffs.

by Blueisgood on Nov 4, 2007 9:26 PM EST   0 recs

Don't get me wrong
If I failed to give the Pats credit in my last post, I was wrong. The Pats played well, they didn't get rattled, etc.. puke..etc.. As far as In Brady we Trust calling me a baby and this and that, I was simply pointing out (in my opinion) what we (because I'm a Colts fan) as a team did to contribute to the loss. No need to go over-board on this and look for things to argue about. I'll say it clear as day so that there are no doubts, we got beat by a better team today. Please sidenote.. We didn't help ourselves in anyway by sitting four gamers and kicking fieldgoals against a prolific offense such as New England. Now with that said, I wish you all luck and I hope we are healthy in January so we can whoop your ass with a full squad. Cheers

Helluva game.
  • Colts defense played great against a great offense.
  • Colts offense looked terrible if you take Addai out of the equation.
Moorehead, as a #3 receiver is a stretch. Need Harrison and Gonzo back out there soon.

oh
and Charlie Johnson just plain blows. He got manhandled all game.

Patriots fans
I am a Colts season ticket holder & have been to many games, but the Patriots fans were rude, obnoxious and worse than any other team's fans I have seen.

One man behind us said "I hope you got hurt" when the Pats first kicked off to the Colts.  About 8 of use turned around & looked at him.  There was  alot more.  I hated for the Colts to lose just for that reason.

by Iloveretrievers on Nov 5, 2007 10:59 AM EST   0 recs

Bothers me too.
Pats fan here.

Sorry about that jerk hoping your player was hurt.  Unfortunately you are correct when you say that many Pats fans are obnoxious and rude.  The stuff they yell at our own cheerleaders would curl your hair.

Looking forward to the second matchup.  I was extremely impressed at how fast your defense is!  Kept Brady from establishing a good rhythm.

Adjustments the Pats made to defending the run in the second half was a key factor.

I don't believe for a second this nonsense about piped in noise in your stadium.  Somebody started a rumor, that's all.  Also, the refs weren't "bought off".  Thats ridiculous.  However I do think they could have had a better day.

Watch out for San Diego.  They are going to be PISSED off after the embarassment against Minn. yesterday.  Beware of a letdown.

See you in January.

Trashing the other teams fans is not the same as enjoying your favorite teams. Stay cool.

by GenericGerry on Nov 5, 2007 3:56 PM EST   0 recs

Excuses are like &#@$*, everyone got one
I don't remember hearing the colts fans talking about all the injuries to the pats secondary after they won last years afc championship game. I guess that it only counts if the injuries are on the colts team.
