norv turner = new coach of san diego chargers

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-chargers-turner&prov=ap&type=lgns

congrats to him.

does anyone think he'll do a better job than marty schottenheimer, though?

it should be interesting to see how this pans out & how things work out with the coordinators.

go colts! asdfghjkl;

Well
I'm very optimistic for next season now, to say the least.  Norv Turner is going to run that team into the ground, just like every other team he has and ever will be on.

Indeed
I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard the Chargers hired Turner.  Suddenly that Chargers game looks a little easier next year.

norv
like wade phillips this is a guy who has looked good as a coordinator, but has proven he can't do it as a head coach.  let's be honest though, this is a bit of desperation hiring by the chargers after ditching schottenheimer...  probably part of the hope here is that turner will be a good coach to rivers,(as he has done well developing A. Smith in SF) in whom the chargers have sunk a lot of money.. with not a lot of return..  but think this will backfire.. i think a lot of how this team does too will depend on who he brings in as a defensive coordinator and how much of the scheme he runs will change.

The Chargers
sort of painted themselves into a corner.  However, once they fired Marty, Norv was pretty much their best fit.  That is a team that is ready to win now.  Grooming a young head coach would defeat that purpose.  With the talent the Chargers have, they just nead someone to not screw things up.  Maybe this is the time that Norv becomes the Head coach everyone thought he was going to be when he left the Cowboys as Offensive Coordinator and went to the Redskins.

Disagree
The Chargers did paint themselves into a corner, but Turner is exactly the kind of guy they don't need. I think you are correct to say that the Chargers are ready to win now, but they haven't won yet. They need somebody to push them, as a team, over the hump. I think Turner can have a tremendous impact on individual players (look what he did for Alex Smith this year), and even on an entire offense. I am unconvinced that he can lead 53 players to the promised land. Some guys are great coordinators and lousy head coaches. Everything we have seen of Turner makes me think he's one of those guys. No disrespect to him, he's a great football mind. But his strength is as an offensive coordinator. As a head coach he has to do too much that is out of his area of expertise.

I agree
that Turner is at his best as a coordinator.  I also agree that he sucks as a head coach.  That being said, i dont think he needs to be "the man" to lead this particular team being that the individual talent on this team is probably good enough.  I hope he does his usual poor job as head coach because that means this is one less team the Colts have to deal with.  My comment was more a dig on the Chargers organization for leaving themselves no better option than Norv Turner than it was exhorting the talents of Norv.

Gotcha
And I completely agree. Hamhanded handling of the situation at best.

organizations
a lot of how well an team does is all about the whole organization from the GM and headcoach down.  Butler was the one with shotty who built this team up, and with both of them gone A.J. Smith and Norv will ruin this team... LOL  chargers blew their load this year and i think they will now go into a decline.  Brees will make it to the superbowl next year, and phillips will be lucky to complete 50% of his passes..

I hope
you are correct bluegirl!
