Why Are we in the AFC South? Seriously ,it's b.s.

This is proabably an old topic, but how did Indy get put in the AFC South? Of course Miami should be in the South and the Indy in the East/or North. I live in So. Cal these days and the fact that we are in the AFC South reinforces the belief that Indiana is a Southern state....One gets tired defending the honor of one's homeland, but defend we shall! I think it's a great dis-service the NFL did to us when they reorg'ed the league. I just think it's b.s and I am curious if any other of the Stampeders' feel the same. (And I already know the argument WHY too and that's b.s. as well.......)

P.S. Dig the play by play Blueshoe.....Keep it up...and Sorgi looked mighty "OK" in that last outing.........

The Mason Dixon line ...
Is along the border my friend. Indiana has historically been split between North and South.

Personally, I'd rather there was an "AFC Central" or similar.

The Colts have always been good about division changes - we were an NFC team originally, remember.

ya and we're on the north side of that....
Historically, my friend, Indiana has been a Northern state. We weren't a border slave state in the Civil War, but the backbone of the North's western armies. It was a lot of brave hero's who burned Atlanta to the ground. To be North of the Mason-Dixon line is to be a northern state. Indiana has never been split...ever. Walk down to the Soldier's and Sailors monument if there is any discussion left.

And ya, in Baltimore and I have zero connection to that team or legacy.......

You need to check your facts bub...
Yes, Indiana is north of the Mason Dixon, but the southern part of the state has always had a close association with the south.

Morgan's Raiders - the Klan - are all significant parts of Indiana history, and significant portions of the southern half of the state (of where I'm from) still identify with "the South".

wrong
Indiana almost seceeded. The governor had to literally put chains on the doors of the state house to prevent a vote. Indiana would of been part of the Confederacy.

AFC South
Obviously, they wanted to keep Miami in the AFC East to maintain their rivalry with the Pats, Jets, and Bills. The Colts had traditionally been the doormat of the East. So, having them leave it was no biggie.

In a geographically ideal world, Baltimore should be in the East, Miami in the South, and Indy in the AFC North with Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Cincy. However, because of team rivalries it makes better sense to keep it as is.

Side note: Martin Luther King Jr. once referred to Indiana as "Up South." And no, it was not meant as a compliment.

"History shall absolve me...."
In Central and Northern Indiana, there is a saying. "Kentucky took Indiana without firing a shot." This represents the large portion of Southerners who looking for economic prosperity moved North, into Indiana. Mainly a lot of people from Kentucky. I understand that "Hoosiers" from the Southern portion of the state identify with Kentucky and the South, and it's because your family probably came from there at some point.  I feel safe making this assumption when I am referred to as "bub." But let's not revise history here gentlemen. Regardless, you are painting yourself into a corner with your revisionist history. Though the Klan, indeed a deplorable institution, is a dark part of our state's history, you certainly show your ignorance in the genesis of even that, as it was in the 1920's it had nothing to do with "the South", but more with Christian identity. Look up DC Stephenson, origins of the Klan on wikipedia. You'll learn a lot. They already taught this to you in 4th grade social studies, but you were sleeping I guess. Chuck D of Public Enemy said it best, "Indiana trees hanging "brothers" like leaves." And I know what MLK meant as well, BigBlueShoe. (said sadly)

My suggestion in regards to the "AFC South" thing was, it is sort of handicapping us from a national perspective (when we are trying to get on a "worldly" footing), and we need to cast off those moronic characterizations...... but there you go again. Jingoism rears its ugly head.....

If you think Indiana ALMOST seceeded, you are DEAD WRONG. The reason that Gov. Morgan, who I am pretty familiar with, did so was not to prevent the secession of the state, but rather quell "anti-union/anti-war sentiment" happening (When Abe Lincoln's reelection seemed unlikely.) Lincoln referred to Morgan as his "rock" of Unionism. Yes, there was anti-war sentiment in Indiana, especially after the Emancipation Proclamation, and unfortuantely there is and was a large ground swell of support for a group called the Copperheads a pro-slavery, anti-war movement, BUT IN NO WAY WERE THEY A MAJORITY. EVER.

It's fun to have a confederate flag on your car in Spencer County, but you're really just embarrassing yourself man...... You're a Northerner, a Yankee, and "historical" is never going to be otherwise........I attach links as exhibit A and B,  your honor. The state rests.....Go COLTS!

That's revisionist codswallop ...
The Klan's propaganda today sez they're based on "Christian principles". Don't kid yourself about the Klan. And it wasn't just the 1920's ... Heard of Greensburg before?

Also, what do you base your "majority" on? Between 1890-1950, the majority of the population lived in Southern Indiana.

Again, you need to check your facts and quit trying to apologize for the Klan and the Confederacy, which are both deplorable.

whoops ...
Martinsville, although Greensburg has it's own Klan history ...

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
Can you read? Are you retarded? Apologize for the Klan and Confederacy? Is that what you gleaned fom my comments? Your reply is so stupid, it stupifies me........

That's it Menning. I admit I mis-spelled the Governor's last name. But man Menning.....good grief......scratching my head on that one.

Let's stick to football.

Just so you know ...
I purposely switched the 'a' and the 'e' ...

Now get over yourself for a second and realize that you're the one who got all bent out of shape because I rationalized the AFC South placement, because people from Indiana feel like Southerners.

It's an opinion - and I supported it with some facts. I can't help it if you don't like Indiana's history and present.

Apologies......
From one Colt's fan to another. Opinions vary on everything....but we got the Horseshoe in common. I admit, I'm a ba$tard.....but "give me a break, I'm a child of divorce." - Patrick Bateman.

You're a big man ...
not a bastard for apologizing. I might have been a bit too vitriolic myself, I humbly extend my apologies as well.

Sometimes in writing, we come off much harsher than we intend (since the context of face to face interaction is lost).

Go Colts!

Umm...isn't this a football blog?
I thought we were discussing the "football" reasons the Colts were in the AFC South.  Not some weird geopolitical/historical analysis of the "Southernness" of the State of Indiana.  Why not put the Dolphins in there with Jacksonville?  In-state division rivalries can be a good thing, especially against well matched teams.  I think that Miami/Jax would be a much better rivalry than say, Cleveland/Cinci or San Diego/Oakland.  That's why I think moving the Jags to San Antonio and keeping them in the South would be a great move.  The Texans and the Cowboys have a budding rivalry despite the disparity in talent and the fact that they are in different conferences.  An improved Texans team along with a San Antonio team with hopefully a new owner and coach could provide fireworks in the Lone Star state two times a season.

I'm personally for a big shuffle, a Colts, Browns, Bengals, Steelers North, a Pats, Ravens, Bills, and Jets East, a Fins, Texans, Jags, and Titans South and the West staying the same. The Battle of I-74 could be a good storyline every year.

But I'm just ranting now, so just tell me what you think about the above alignment.

by Bullard47 on Aug 31, 2007 1:07 AM EDT reply actions

Well
the alignment would certainly make more sense geographically. It seems like a major shake-up, but you're really only proposing a merry-go-round shift of 3 teams: Colts to the North, Ravens to the East, and Dolphins to the South. Doesn't seem too bad in that regard.

However, in terms of rivalries, I think Miami is the biggest loser in this scenario, at least in the short term. While an intrastate rivalry with the Jags could certainly develop, I don't think it would be enough to offset the losses of the Pats, Jets, and Bills rivalries they currently have. I would imagine they'd fight tooth and nail against the realignment.

As for the Colts, I kinda like it. We've been developing rivalries with our division-mates, but they're not exactly longstanding. I'd embrace the opportunity to develop rivalries with long-traditioned teams that are actually within driving distance of Indy. That would bring a whole new element to Colt fandom that we've never had.
