Why are we here?

Update [2007-9-14 18:15:20 by BigBlueShoe]: cynyc is much better at articulating why it is important to talk about Belicheat than I am. Read below, and thanks ctnyc.

Let me apologize in advance if this post seems a little strident; I've been on a 3-day debate with 6th Round and Tommasse over at Pats Pulpit. You can probably imagine how many excuses and baseless accusations I've endured.

Anyway, I want to respond to something that I'm a little bothered by. I've seen several times now (from reputable posters and not-so-reputable posters -- I'm talking to you Archie) that we focus too much on news about other teams or the NFL in general. I disagree, but I want to know others' opinions.

My argument is basically this: yes, this is a Colts website, but the Colts do not exist in a vacuum. Are we really so compartmentalized that we can only talk specifically about the Colts? What happens on other teams and in the league in general affects the Colts. Therefore it is appropriate to discuss. For example, the Patriots are our biggest rivals. An enormous national story about their cheating is absolutely fair game on this site. Or take the case of Tennessee: they're probably our biggest division rival (a Titans-fan friend of mine recently told me that the Colts are certainly perceived in Tennessee as the Titans' biggest rival). Therefore, posts about the crazy antics of Vince Young -- the face of their franchise -- are certainly valid discussion material.

As with anything else, all of this can go too far for some. But those people certainly have the option of stopping reading when they've had enough. There always has been, and I'm sure always will be, plenty of Colts-only material on this site.

So my question is: what are all of your thoughts on this? Why are we here? Should this site be for Colts and only Colts information? Or should we pay attention to the context in which the Colts exist? I obviously have strong opinions about the subject, but am interested to hear what others want/expect from the site.

And if you don't care either way, that's fine too. Thanks for indulging me.

Why are we here?
"One of life's great mysteries isn't it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence? Or is there really a God, watching everything. You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know man, but it keeps me up at night."
Go Colts!

why do other team's fans care
What Colts fan talk about on a Colts fan website? I think they just don't like to hear criticism.

I don't see other blogs
where people rip their own fellow bloggers like this one. Just because I don't 100% agree with BigBlueShoe or ctnyc, I am a not-so-reputable poster. These are the type of people who will run Peyton out of town when his career eventually winds down.

Ripping bloggers
It's important to note that just because I trash a blogger's opinion about something doesn't mean I trash he blogger personally. Many SB Nation bloggers take my opinions to the wood shed, and about 70% of the time they are right and I'm just a blow hard Colts fan. Are they ripping me? NO! Do I take it personally? Of course not.

It's sports. Fun trash talking and debate is encouraged. Without it, what are we doing here commenting on a blog? I have no personal gripe with tommasse. He's a Pats fan and he loves his team. I just find that many of his opinions are not based in fact. That's my stance. He's entitled to his opinion, and I'm glad he has a forum to voice it.

I'm also entitled to bash the utter crap out of his opinion if I think he's wrong. That goes for everybody. And I fully expect, and encourage, other bloggers to call me out on my opinions. If I say a player stinks, and that player ends up having a great year, then I expect to get read the riot act.

It's sports folks. It's nothing personal. When it becomes personal, then the joy of sports loses it luster.

Of course we should talk about things...
other than the Colt's 100% of the time! I mean, I LOVE talking about the Colts and could do it for hours on end, but there comes a point where you exhaust everything Colts and so you have to focus your attention to Colts related news. And since year after year the game between the Colts and the Patriots usually decides who has home field advantage in the playoffs. And it's not just the Patriots that we trash talk on, we love to trash talk our division as well!

We only really talk about it ...
when it's Colts-related. You think the NE scandal doesn't touch us at all? It's not like we're talking about the backup QB situation on the 49ers or something.

I like this blog because...
It is informative, and it is Colts-based.  It isn't just about the Colts, it is about a lot of things that Colts fans care about.   Are we interested when our biggest rival gets caught cheating?  You bet!

What should we be "allowed" to talk about here?  Anything and everything we feel like. Go Colts!
