"Do What We Do"...

That has been Dungy and the Colts motto for the past several years now, and you know what? It sucks...

I'm a strong believer in Dungy.  I think he's a good coach, but he's a little too patient for my taste.  That motto can only take us so far.  "Doing what we do" isn't good enough.  I'm sick of sitting back in deep zones and giving up plays to the offense.  Our hope is that if we make the opposing offense drive all the way down the field, then they'll make mistakes.  Instead of trying to force mistakes like other teams do, we just hope.  Well it works a lot of times, but when it doesn't, we sure look like we're getting our asses beat out there.

Our defense works great when we A.) Play with a lead, and B.) Have Freeney and Mathis to rush the passer.  When we play against a good offensive team, we need to pressure the QB.  I saw one Blitz that worked effectively, and any other attempt was just pathetic.  We gave Phillip Rivers enough time to cook freakin breakfast back there in between throwing to wide open receivers.  If we're going to sit back in soft zones all day, then we need to generate pressure.  If we can't generate pressure, you would think someone would realize that it's time to man up and pressure him.  We didn't adjust to losing Freeney.  Josh Thomas couldn't rush the counter at dunkin' doughnuts.

As far as the offense goes, sometimes I just don't know what the hell is going on out there.  I think Peyton is too analytical sometimes.  He is so smart before the snap, that he already "knows" who is going to be open prior to snapping the ball.  When something doesn't work out, he gets happy feet and doesn't complete the pass.  When you watch Tom Brady, he sits back there calm, flat footed and scans the field for the open guy.  I think Peyton needs to be a little more patient and look for the open guy instead of predetermining who to throw it to.

While I'm on the topic of offense, WTF happened to the running game?  There were several posts prior to the game about this, but honestly I wasn't really concerned.  Did we just forget to run the ball?  It wasn't like we were playing from behind.  Last year we won the Super Bowl because we ran when we needed to, and we stopped the run.  Today we didn't do particularly well at either.  And what was the deal with all of those weird formations, especially at the goal line towards the end of the game?  Why did we have a Trips-Left formation.  Why a 5 wide with Amorasho (Ahmad Rashad is what we call him) and Addai?  I don't think that was the time to start trying new formations.  We could have used a little pass protection in that situation.  What happened to the 2 tight end set that Peyton was so good at?  At least we were a little deceiving when we used that because you didn't know who would stay in and block and who would release to run routes.  Lining up 5 wide at the goal-line is stupid.  It's a perfect time to blitz because you're not going to give up a big play, and you limit the amount of time Peyton has to throw the ball.

On a side note... does anyone else get the feeling that Marvin is done?  Maybe all of those "career threatening" reports were true.  He hasn't been the same, and I think it's safe to say that Wayne is the new #1 in Indy.

Sorry for the rambling post, but I'll try to sum it up.  We don't gameplan very well for opposing teams.  We have all of the talent in the world, but when teams stop us from "Doing what we do", we don't have anything else to fall back on.  San Diego came up with a plan to attack us, and they executed.  They couldn't run very well, so they threw the ball. We couldn't stop them on 3rd down, and we couldn't convert our own 3rd downs.  This game wasn't Peyton's fault, and it wasn't the defenses fault... it was the coaching staffs.

Now it's on to an uncertain off-season.  Do we resign Jake Scott and/or Lilja?  Does Marvin come back next year as the same player he was in the past?  Do we cut McFarland? Does Rob Morris return? Do we re-sign Dallas? Does Dungy retire? Do I cut Kenton Keith's hands off since he doesn't need them???

Lucas Oil Stadium... here we come.

I agree
with most of what you say. (Disclaimer: What I'm about to say is broad generalization, not absolute truth in every single case. But I think it is fair in general terms). I've thought in the past that we "do what we do" exceptionally well, but when it doesn't work the team seems confused and slow to adjust. I see other teams having great success by game-planning for specific opponents (i.e. Pittsburgh beating us a couple years ago, the Patriots adjusting game plans to exploit an opponent's weaknesses, etc.), but I see us treating every team virtually the same way. To be fair, it often works, particularly against lesser teams. But when we play the better teams, they often make adjustmnents more quickly than we do.

The exception to this was last year's playoffs. The running game was our bread and butter (Peyton's medicore stats didn't hurt us). Our run defense was changed and vastly improved, and it wasn't just Bob's return. We had our DEs collapse the line instead of just rushing upfield, the LBs contained much better, and you see where such adjustments got us.

There's something to be said for playing your game to the best of your ability and letting the chips fall where they may. But when it doesn't work, we're sunk. I honestly can't believe that we couldn't rattle Rivers and Volek more than we did. Mediocre, inconsistent QBs playing on the road, in front of the loudest crowd in the league, and we made them look like Brett Favre. Where were the different blitz packages? Where was Bob Sanders living in the SD backfield? Oh... that's right. That's not "what we do."

I agree
Sometimes you need to have more strategy in your game plan than pumping loud noise in the dome.

That
has been thoroughly debunked many times over by the network and the NFL, remember? Only the Pats are cheaters.

Hey Standingpat....
I also heard that Bob Sanders is the love child of an Alien, which gives him telepathic powers, so that is how he is able to get to the play so quickly...he already knows where the ball is going!

It must be true, because I heard it, and it gives an excuse for other teams to whine about the Colts.  It also makes cheating teams like the Patriots feel better about their team, since they aren't the ony ones cheating.

If "everybody cheats" isn't true, well then, there must be something wrong with their team, right.  That couldn't be.

what about Bob?
And that "classy" unsportsman like conduct penalty he cost his team.

by standingpat on Jan 14, 2008 4:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

we've already called him out on that one
I don't know if he was talking shit or just messing around with a former teammate, either way in that situation it was uncalled for.

BBS also
called out Marlin Jackson's stupid personal foul that kept the last drive alive. C'mon, if you're going to troll, at least be educated about it.

Bob's conduct
Before you go accusing Bob Sanders of unsportsmanlike conduct:  If you listen to Nate Kaeding (the man he "taunted"), there was absolutely no ill will on Bob's part.

They were teammates at the University of Iowa, and Bob was just being enthusiastic and enjoying the game. Bill Polian confirmed on his Monday night broadcast that Bob shouldn't have done it, but that doesn't mean it was malicious. Bob just wasn't thinking.

Come to think of it, if Bob had ill will towards Nate Kaeding, we would be calling him "the late Nate Kaeding."

Every defense
Every defense is based around stopping the pass by applying pressure to the QB in order to A. force sacks or B. force turnovers. That's the way it works and the cover 2 is no different in that regard. The difference is that the cover 2 gets pressure with its front 4 and drops 7 into coverage with all 7 guys facing the QB in a zone coverage. So if you don't get pressure with your front 4 then the basis of the defense falls apart.

Why ....
was it good enough for you last year? Oh yeah, the SB.

C'mon, get off the boo-bird bandwagon. Tony's a fine coach, one of the best all-time. We're lucky, in such a small market, to have such success. Just ask a Cardinals fan.

I'm tired of people throwing Dungy under the bus, because he's soft. Last year, all anyone could gush about was "quiet strength", and how great Tony was for who he was. Now, it's "the sky is falling", "fire dungy!", "it's the boogy man!"

Quit being such spoiled brats. We're fortunate to be fans of such a good team.

No...
I think Tony is a great coach.  He is an excellent motivator, and he's probably the reason the game was even close and we didn't get down and out.

That being said, this team fails to make adjustments.  When we don't run the ball successfully, we abandon it.  There was no reason to get away from the running game.  The most we were behind was 4, and it was constantly a one possession game.

Also, we failed to get any form of pass rush on the QB.  Bringing Bob down in the box is fine, but is that the only adjustment we can make?  We played Raheem Brock at DE instead of Tackle, but he failed to get any constant rush.  Mathis was non existant in the game.

One of our 5 "keys to returning to the Super Bowl" was more playmakers along the defensive line.  Don't get me wrong, Ed Johnson did a good job during the season, but he wasn't a "playmaker"  Freeney makes that entire line better, and without his presence we didn't have what it takes to get it done.  I'm not saying Fire Dungy or Polian because obviously that isn't the answer.  I'm just making suggestions as a Fan on what I think the Colts need to do to improve.

Dungy and Polian brought us a Super Bowl, and that's great.  They are some of the best at what they do, but that does not put them and their decisions above question from the fans and media.  They are held to the same standards that everyone else in this league is, and when there is a deficiency I'm going to point it out.  Enjoy your Kool-Aid.

No issues there ...
ppr, you make sense. What I'm decrying is all these chicken littles running around yelling about "fire dungy!" "cut k2!".

ok...
What has KK done to prove his usefulness?  Pretty much nothing.  This isn't the first year he's ever played football.  He's been playing for a while, which would make his rocks for hands inexcusable.

gfaojga
I know what his stats are, but stats don't tell the whole story.  Like the number of times he's dropped gimme passes and caused interceptions.

Stats wouldn't tell you that?
I'm sure you can find how many drops he's had. How many times Manning has been intercepted, and finally, how many times K2 was thrown too.

Me? I'm too lazy.
