Can we stop talking about that team from...
the Northeast on this blog? I want to revert back to earlier in the season when it was a banned topic until we played them. Let's focus on our team and what we need to do to still be playing at this time next year. Who cares what a player did? Or who is injured? This is a COLTS blog. It's bad enough that there are so many Team * trolls on the Indy Star Message Board. We can eliminate talk about them and still have fun with the resident Cowgirl troll Terry.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Eh...
I'd say after that, though, it could definitely slow down a lot.

Or
I mean, they choked in 2006 against Peyton and nearly killed themselves. Imagine what they'd do if they choked away an undefeated season to Peyton's brother.
Dare to dream, folks. Dare to dream.

It's a travesty
What motivation did multi-millionaires like Belichick and Rodney Harrison have for their cheating? Oh that's right, ego. Yeah, not quite the same thing.

true...
Peyton loses.. misses the AFCCG and leaves the burden of stopping the Patriots up to his little brother. Eli failed the first time (Pats rode to an undefeated regular season on his watch), he gets a second shot at New England on Feb. 3rd.
Folks... go ahead and dream of Eli saving the day, I'm afarid that's as close to beating the Patriots as the Giants will get.

can you come up with some football knowledge

bluegirl
I'll start -
The Patriots have been a season-long juggernaut so let's focus on the N.Y. Giants. The most important aspect of the game is of course which team will win. So, how will (how can) the Giants get a victory in the SB?
These two teams met at the end of Dec. and despite missing two starting offensive linemen the Patriots found a way to thwort the Giants passrush. In fact, Brady had a banner day. he final score ended up 38-35 but there is a caviot with the score - when Moss caught TD pass #23 a teammate joined in the endzone celebration and the resultant flag forced the Pats to kickoff from the 20. The short kick was returned for a Giant's TD - a gift from the Pats and a thing that definitely won't happen in the SB. So, if we adjust the score to reflect the Pats gift, the score become 38-28.
So... the task at hand for the Giants is to make up ten points on a fully stocked New England team, at an indoor/warm weather stadium, with a teamfull of guys who've never been to the Super Bowl. Lastly, Brady had a less than ideal game vs the Chargers, this does not bode well for the Giants, Brady simply doesn't have two "off" games in a row.
Hey - maybe the Giants will make a game of it but I doubt it. I see the Pats getting out to an early lead and never looking back. It'll be 17-6 at halftime, with a final score of Pats 31 - Giants 16. Game over.
How do you see it??
by horseofadifferentcolor on Jan 22, 2008 5:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I see it...
Other factors: Plaxico Burress v. Randy Moss-two me-first players who are consistently in off-field trouble and often quit when they don't get the ball thrown their way. Plax played out of his mind in the NFC championship game, and it seems he is finally recovered from the torn ligament that hobbled him since week 2. Randy has all but disappeared this postseason as his off-field troubles and general douchebaggery have returned (skipping AFC championship post game)
the Giants succeed on the road. 10-1 away from the meadowlands. granted, the patriots havent lost a game at all, but Eli plays better when he isn't in a stadium full of fans chomping at the bit to attack him.
The Pats have cut it close too many times. Antoine Bethea's dropped interception, Brian Billick's boneheaded TO, AJ Feely's borederline retarded heave-ho directly to a pro bowl cornerback, bad decisions by Norv Turner and Jack of the River...I see the Giants edging by the Patriots by containing Moss and controlling the clock. 24-21 Giants
(of course, there's no way I would ever root for the patriots ;))

Eddie...
Brady's got his two starting O linemen back & his two tight ends back (all four were missing for the Giants game in Dec.), the N.Y. D line will not get to Brady, not enough to bother him. Maroni will run the ball with authority when given the chance. The Patriots offense will simply take what is given them by the Giants defense.
When the Patriots play defense they will concentrate on shutting down the run and make Eli beat them through the air. The Pats D line will try to collapse the pocket and make Eli throw on the run. Vrabel will bring constant pressure from the left OSLB spot. He should get to Manning more than once. They will try to force Manning to throw to someone besides Burress by doublng him most of the time.
The Giants offense has been averaging about 22 points a game in the NFC playoffs, the Patriots defense has been allowing 16 to their AFC playoff opponents. You predict that the Pats will get 21 on the Giants (they got 38 while short-handed in N.Y.). I gotta think that with the perfect throwing conditions in Arizona, Brady will have a field day with those talented receivers. You predict that the Giants will put up 24 on the Pats, the Jaguars couldn't do it and neither could the Chargers. Both played pretty darn good football against the Pats.
Talk about a ball control game, New England is the king of ball controll (see last Sunday's nine minute final drive to ice the game).
The Giants have had a nice playoff run through the weaker teams of the NFC but, they are about to meet their match. The Patriots will win by two TD's to go 19-0.

i don't buy
for two teams that make it to the superbowl... especially a new york that has had to fight it's way there I don't think there is usually a big difference in ability... and the pats may have 3 rings in recent history.. but it was on the strength of a defense that is now definitely past its prime. and when you are winning by field goals there is definitely a strong element of luck involved...

Don't you hate it when facts get in the way of your arguement... me too.
Fact:
The Patriots have not been winning by field goals, the closest score was 21-12, the other game was 31-20. Field goals are still three points aren't they?
Fact:
The Patriots defense has been better than any other team in the playoffs this year. They are allowing 16 points a game. The Pats defense may be past it's prime but, they're still getting it done.
PS: I don't think that winning by field goals would be considered lucky, a close game maybe, but hardly lucky.
PPS: See the Colts young-gun D in the Chargers game for a defense that didn't get it done.

5'3" Internet Bully
For someone who did not even attend college, you seem to have no trouble pronouncing your intellectual superiority; bashing the merits of others and such. Your uneducated elitism, prevalent in new england it seems, is furthered with every post you make.
Any time you are faced with facts that you have no response to, you merely divert the debate in a child-like manner (see our 'conversation' days ago, as one example).
She wasn't just talking about the post-season. In fact, in the Ravens game that you were given multiple chances to win (and finally 'won'), it was by a field goal.
Finally, nobody is surprised that you tout opinions as facts, obviously not knowing the difference (see 'No College', above), but here you will not be allowed to rant unchallenged:
"Fact: The Patriots defense has been better than any other team in the playoffs this year."
That is not a fact. You can make an argument towards this conclusion, but it is no fact.
Earlier you say that the 2007-8 Patriots are the best NFL team of all time, which is not a fact, but we would all like to see you flounder and try to prove it. A proof is different that a string of platitudes and conjecture.
We await your rage filled response, likely keeping away from anything I mentioned above.

You're really caught up on higher education. My God man, we can't all be as scholarly as you my blogging friend. Why waste your time here with the unwashed, is PBS off the air tonight??
You have incredible insight on bluegirl's musings.. I find no mention of the Ravens or multible chances. That game by the way, was won with a last minute TD pass from Brady to Gaffney, not a field goal. Get your head out the books and watch a little football Bob.
You don't like my facts - I mention two "facts" in the post you berated... give me the real facts then. Please, share them with us. If you're arguing that the effective of a team defense cannot be rated, that it is an entirely subjective exercise, I say you're wrong. It's not conjecture to call the Patriots defense better than the other defenses in the playoffs. If you know math, you can figure it out.
If points allowed per game isn't the best barometer of a top defense, please tell me what is? What complicated criteria would you use to identify the best D?
Can't wait to hear back...

6'3" here
Fact:
The Patriots have not been winning by field goals, the closest score was 21-12, the other game was 31-20. Field goals are still three points aren't they?
I have a feeling she was talking about the Super Bowls the Pats won. They were all won by a kicker, but his name escapes me right now. I don't think it was Gostahmadinejadski. I could be wrong though...
Fact:
The Patriots defense has been better than any other team in the playoffs this year. They are allowing 16 points a game. The Pats defense may be past it's prime but, they're still getting it done.
Well this one I'll throw some numbers out at you. Are you ready for numbers? I haven't actually looked at these numbers before I type them so this should be fun for all of us.
Patriots Defense (In 2 Games):
16.0 points/game allowed
330.5 Total Yards/Game
92 Rushing Yards/G
4.18 Rushing YPC
238.5 Passing Yards/G
58.5 Completion %
2 sacks (1/G)
3 ints (1.5/G)
Giants Defense (In 3 Games):
17.0 points/game allowed
290.3 Total Yards/Game
83.6 Rushing Yards/G
3.63 Rushing YPC
206.6 Passing Yards/G
60.0% Completion %
3 sacks (1/G)
5 ints (1.66/G)
Let's look at some other numbers too:
Pats D: allowed 31.8% 3rd down
Giants D: Allowed 50% 3rd down
So while it's debatable which D has played better in the playoffs, the Giants have quite a few numbers on their side. The Pats have 3 important measured categories so hold on to that, and tell me it's only about getting off the field on 3rd down, not allowing points and keeping (already inaccurate) QB's inaccurate.
Good night and Good luck.

I was talking about superbowls
And the patriots defense of this year is probably a lot like our defense in 2004... A huge number of points scored hides a lot of deficiencies since the other team is now forced to take chances and make mistakes.
Without a doubt they are a a talented team, but a lock on the superbowl? Their defense was better in 2001 and 2003 when they won. And isn't it defense that wins championships?
I still think their playoff run is suspect beating up on a jags team that never really scored a lot of points, and a battered chargers team that left in on the field to get by us. I think the giants have proved a lot more winning on the road and beating both a division rival and green bay (who have arguably one of the best QB's playing for them) ... they sort of remind me of Pittsburgh the year they won. (and maybe not having Tiki around is actually an improvement..)

warming up
So, the kooky, trolling lib from new england is going to come to the blog ,made up primarily of hard working hoosiers, and paint ME as the condescending elitist?!?
I am the great unwashed. I am fly-over country. I am the Second Amendment. I am self-reliance. Do not try and logically separate me from my brethren Colts fans on this blog. When you go to the mall on Saturday, do you ever see tom brady? Ever chat up randy moss over at panera? No, you don't, because the team you worship doesn't care about you, or your community, at all. You spend every one of your over-taxed dollars on jerseys and tickets to an owner and bunch of players that would rather run you over in their Maserati than have to talk to you.
I'm sure it is tough to fathom that there are `hicks' on this website that are: smarter, more educated and better factually prepared than you, but it's true. It's damn true.
The Ravens game was won by 3 points. A field goal is worth 3 points. I was correct in saying the game was "won by a field goal". This is standard football jargon; a generality if you will. I did not say, "The Patriots kicked a field goal to win the game." That is a different statement.
If you want to get `mathy', then lets take the points per game allowed by the defense, then multiply that by the number of mL of HGH injected by said defense throughout the season. Then add the number of heart attacks and strokes suffered by small, overrated linebackers, due to their years of steroid abuse. Not first place anymore, are you?
I am illustrating that making such broad, `factual' statements like you do time and time again is absurd. Football cannot be broken down as simply as "best this, best that" and certainly not "best EVER!" like the patriots homers on espn do every day. Their commentary is only engaging to those with a child-like attention span, or those that have an "in" team. The patriots are their `home' team; proximity dictates this.

chilling out
It's reassurring to learn that you are self reliant. Me.. I'm a kooky liberal from New England feeding off the public troth, gives me tons of time to engage your brethern Colt fans on this entertaining site. So... we differ there.
I don't buy tickets to the Pats games (can't afford them - no college degree) but, I do own a Rodney Harrison jersey. I'm not sure what kind of car he drives.
A field goal equals three points so we'll say the Patriots won by a field goal.. I get it now.
The Patriot LB's are older than Indy's no doubt about it but, the Pats are still playing & the Colts are at home watching. So, I'm unconvinced by your rant on the N.E. backers.
In standard football jargon - the New England Patriots are without question, the best team in pro football. This situation bothers you because you are a Colt fan and you're unhappy that your favorite team doesn't do better in the playoffs. No need to get weirded out though, there's always next year.

Kyle...
The Patriots don't have the best defense in the league. They have a defense that's playing pretty well in the playoffs, a defense that is smart and toughens up in the red zone. The LB's won't knock your head off but, they are smart and wily and versatile. Hey - the Pats don't get blown out of too many games these days.
No problem.

like I knew you would
I wasnt making a statement towards all of your LB's, just the one who, without injecting steroids, is not fast, strong or a pro-bowler. Additionally, those same steroids made him suffer a stroke in the off season a couple of years ago.
Sometimes cheating doesn't pay. This season it might, I guess.
by WhoaWhoaRobertMathis on Jan 24, 2008 5:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
mybad...
I've no knowledge of who may or may not be injecting steroids in the NFL. It may be prevasive, I don't know. Every Patriot.. every Colt.. player may be juiced, I don't know. You seem to be implying that Tedy Bruschi's minor stroke was induced by doing PED's. I'm not aware of that connection. You may have seen the read the study on this, I haven't seen it.
I feel that the cheating chant that we hear from Colt fans (and others) directed at this incredible Patriots team is born of resentment and jealousy. Colt fans are bitterly disappointed over their teams failue to get to the AFCCG... their teams failure to get back to the Super Bowl. What makes it worse is the Colts primary (and hated) rival is going instead. Ouch!! I wonder how many of the Colt fans here really believe that the 2007 Patriots aren't the best team in the NFL... quite possibly the best team ever?

every single one
Nobody said your team wasn't good, or at times, the best in the league. Nobody on here is lying when we say it is certainly debatable whether you are the best team in the league. Further, the 'best ever' is always up for debate in sports. Michael Jordan is not the best basketball player of all time. Barry Bonds is not the greatest baseball player of all time. And so forth. You sound like an ESPN 'analyst' (actually actor, reading a screen is different than writing original material, different rant...).
Do you think we just come on here and lie about who we think is the best? Nobody outside of new england thinks that you guys honestly won 18 games this year. Any other team blog would tell you the same thing.
The colts are the future and the Pats are past. If it wasn't for the fawning, new england (ESPN) sports media propping them up, all people would talk about is the asterisk. Why dont they release to the public what exactly they did to get fined? It is speculated that it involved taping. Nobody knows, because it is so horrendous that if they did, it would shake the very foundation of the NFL.
The cheating chant is from ALL fans, you need to come out of your bubble.

The problem is nobody will debate the merits of their favorite team (the Colts). For you to exclaim that the Patriots may not be the best football team in the league, you must share with me the name of the team that you think is. Make any sense to you? If the Pats aren't the best, which team is??
You state that nobody thinks that the Patriots didn't honestly win 18 games - you are implyimg that they won them dishonestly? If so, would you please describe to me how they dishonestly won 18 games??
The only people who think the Patriots incredible season should be tainted by an asterisk are those who hold a resentment for the team. These people can never explain to me how the videotape incident made the 2007 Patriots into an unbeatable powerhouse. Would you care to offer an explanation??
