Hit Me: Questions About The Houston Texans
Howdy, Stampede Bluers; it's Tim from Battle Red Blog here. Seeing as how our respective squads are set to tangle on Sunday afternoon in our state-of-the-art retractable open-air stadium, I figure you might have some queries about your beloved Colts' opponent.
As such, hit me with any and all questions you have about my Houston Texans. Want to know how 0-3 tastes? I'll tell you. Care to know whether I blame God and his forces of nature for mandating the Texans open the first three (3) games of the season on the road? I will answer. Curious about whether I think the Texans will rebound or whether we're headed for a pick in the first hour of the 2009 NFL Draft? I'll opine.
So have at it, folks. I'm here to field your questions. At least until I break down and start weeping about how the Texans' season is on the brink and it's not even mid-October yet.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Hi there
How does it feel to be 0-3 and do you think you can beat the Colts this sunday!?

Re: 0-3
How it feels? Nauseating. Absurdly tough opening schedule aside, I never thought the Texas would start the season in a three game hole. I wouldn’t say I’m panicked yet, but I’m getting there.
Yes, I think the Texans can beat the Colts on Sunday. Even though the Texans have only done it once in twelve (12) tries, I think the Texans have a shot. It’s the home opener, and the Colts have been dealt a very bad hand in terms of injuries.

Re: 'Dre
Man, I wish I knew. He put up big numbers, albeit mostly when the game was already decided, against Pittsburgh. Against Tennessee, he dropped passes (including two surefire TDs) that he normally hangs on to. Most disturbingly, he was hardly even targeted last week in Jacksonville, serving more as a decoy than anything else.
By all accounts, he’s healthy, and he showed a great rapport with Schaub last year. So what gives? No idea, and ‘Dre has begun expressing frustration with how he’s been used thus far. For a guy who barely ever has a cross word for anyone, that’s troubling.

If you have
a draft pick during the first hour of the draft, what position/player do you hope to take?
by BlueVol03 on Oct 1, 2008 6:15 PM EDT 0 recs
Re: Draft
I’ll say what I said before last year’s draft: The Texans could take nothing but DBs for the next two years, and I’d have no beef with the strategy. In terms of position of need, the Texans need help in the biggest way at the following positions:
1. CB
2. FS
3. DE
4. LB
I think the offense is in pretty good shape right now, but the defense alternates between mediocre and awful (save Super Mario and DeMeco).

How do you judge the mental state of the Texans
Tim, thanks for checking in with us here. What do you expect the mental state of the Texans to be after losing such a close game to the Jags, on top of being 0-3? Do you think they’ll be a desperate team putting it ALL on the line to win or a team losing it’s confidence and likely to fade early if they get behind at all? Thanks

Re: Mental State
Desperate to be sure, and I don’t see them rolling over on Sunday. They’re reeling; still, they haven’t shown any quit. Look for the Texans to fight like their season depends on it (because, not to be alarmist, it really does).

Couple Questions
-I’ve heard Amobi Okoye has been struggling. I thought he showed tremendous promise to be a great DT last season, so what do you think has gone wrong for him these first three games?
-What’s your current opinion on Matt Schuab as QB of the Texans? Is he developing into a great player, does he still need time to prove himself, or will we be seeing Rosenfels as the starter by the end of the season?
-What’s your take on how rookies Duane Brown and Steve Slaton have played so far?
by Aerostar193 on Oct 1, 2008 8:35 PM EDT 0 recs
Seconded about Slaton
Is this guy the real deal? If so, why was he buried on the depth chart until recently?

Re: Slaton
It’s still too early to say that Slaton is the long-term answer at RB, I think, but the early returns are promising. Don’t take his initial backup role too seriously; that’s almost entirely due to the inexplicable and absurd belief by Kubes that Ahman Green would contribute this year. Slaton is the undisputed No. 1 RB in Houston right now, no matter what happens with Ahman (though the latest reports imply that Green may actually suit up and get a few carries this Sunday, we’ve been burned by that flame too many times to think it’s accurate).
Should be 90% Slaton and 10% Chris Taylor at RB on Sunday.

Answers from another BRB Blogger
I know Tim gets busy, so to help him out, I’ll answers some of these.
Amobi Okoye
It’s true that Amobi is having sort of a sophomore slump, but I wouldn’t put it all on him. I think he a bigger body next to him. He and Travis Johnson are essentially the same size, and have a similar game. Unfortuately, with both barely breaking 300, they can give up a lot in terms of size to opposing O-Lines. This year, we drafted Big Frank Okam out of the University of Texas. He’s a very large 6’5" 350ish type DT. I would love to see him get more repetitions in the trenches next to Amobi, because he has the type of game that would compliment the quicker Okoye. The season, like Amobi, is still young. It will be another handful of games to see if he has indeed taken a step back, or if he just having trouble getting out of the blocks, so to speak.
Matt Schaub
The bad news is that he looked like dog crap in the first two games. Very poor decision making and when he did go to the right receiver, the throw sailed high. That being said, last week he looked like the Matt Schaub that had us Texans fans geeked last year. He was able to move the ball well (307 / 3 TDs / 0 Ints) and was on target for the most part. What changed? Well, he went back to using his TE Owen Daniels and his Possesion Receiver Kevin Walter on third downs. Made a world of difference. He looked confident against a pretty good J-Ville D, so we can only hope that he continues to build on that. I expect him to finish the season as the starter.
Duane Brown
He had a very good showing in the preseason, but struggled mightily against his first two regular season opponents (Pittsburgh and Tennessee). He, like Matt Schaub had a bounce back game against Jax. He’s a solid player who is taking every game in stride and improving week by week.

What do you feel is wrong with the Texan defense?
most of the defense seems to have been in tacked from last years squad, and I wonder why it has digressed this year.
by metal_militia on Oct 1, 2008 10:07 PM EDT 0 recs
Re: Defense
I’ll help Tim field some of these…
It’s hard to say that the defensive unit has digressed when they weren’t very good last year either. If you take a look at the numbers, the Texans finished the season 24th in the league in total team defense. As of today, the Texans are sitting in the 25th spot. In fact, they are allowing nearly the same ypg (07 – 344.2 / 08 – 341.0).
Defensive stalwarts like DeMeco Ryans and Mario Williams are still two of the best at their posistion; the problem is that really don’t have any help. Although we’ve burned countless draft picks on the D-Line, the only one with pass rush ability is Mario. Throw in a patchwork secondary filled with castoffs and youngsters and you can see why there hasn’t been a marked improvement.

Supplemental Answer
SOLIS said it all, but I’ll add this point: The secondary is, in a word, abysmal. Peyton should have a field day, especially because no one except Mario will even sniff Peyton on Sunday.
