Recap Week Six: Colts 31-Ravens 3
Peyton Manning reminded everyone on Sunday that he is the best QB in football, period. |
Hi. Remember us? We're the fans of the team you thought was dead and gone. Turns out our beloved team ain't so dead and gone. Turns out that, just like several other teams in this league, injuries and dumb luck had them stumble out of the gate. Now things are getting corrected, and the Indianapolis Colts were know and love have finally shown up for the 2008 season.
Now, I personally don't put much stock in "statement games." When you win, you make a strong enough statement. The W is all that matters. However, this win had a little more POW! to it than any other normal, non-division game simply because far too many people had dismissed this Colts team and were ready to brush them aside in favor of "new" teams like the Redskins, Titans, and Broncos. Hell, several supposed experts, like our good friend Bill Simmons of ESPN, picked the Colts to lose this past Sunday. In fact, he thought that they would not only lose, but that the lose would end their season (essentially) and hopefully make them go away from the public eye. AKA, ESPN would pay even less attention to them than they already do. He said, and of course I have to quote ole Billy Boy:
The '08 Colts are like Amy Winehouse -- they look awful and it should have ended by now.
A 31-3 route of the Ravens followed by a 30-10 embarrassment for his beloved Patriots at the hands of the hated Chargers, and I once again ask Why does ESPN pay this schmuck to write about a sport he clearly does not know nor understand? I guess I'll never get an answer to that question. I suppose I'll just have to console myself with the fact that Bill Simmons was wrong (again) and that the Colts will continue to be players in this AFC conference as long as the best QB in football (Peyton Manning) is under center for them.
Let us now brush aside Bill and his nasally vocals and put this game into perspective. The Baltimore Ravens came into The Lube with the #1 ranked defense against both the run and pass. They have three very physical downhill runners and a star in the making at QB, Joe Flacco. The Ravens should have defeated the Titans last week, but bad officiating bailed the Titans out of a lose. The officiating this season has been especially bad, and the NFL needs to take a good, hard look at these lawyers they employ to ref their games. But anyway, the Ravens are a tough, physical, BIG team. Many felt they would come into the LUBE, where the Colts were winless in four games (two fake, two real), and push Indy around.
Um, sorry. Not how it happened.
The Colts dominated the Ravens from start to finish. The #1 pass defense was shredded early by Marvin Harrison. I once again ask why ESPN insists on employing morons to talk about football on their network. Remember Merrill Hoge saying Marvin Harrison is no longer Marvin Harrison? Looks like the tape Merrill was watching was not the same tape our own shake n bake has been breaking down. Maybe ESPN should dump Hoggie in favor of shake. At least shake actually knows the game of football.
Harrison, who has routinely torched DBs all season but hasn't gotten the ball thrown to him, finally had a healthy Peyton Manning delivering the football. Marvin burned CB Chris McAllister early and often. Marvin does that a lot with Chris, who many think is a very good CB. The Ravens played the same kind of defense the Bears, Vikes, Jags, and everyone else has played against this Colts team this year. They crowded the line of scrimmage, blitzed, and had their DBs in Cover 1, which is essentially man-to-man coverage. Fans like me have been tearing our hair out the last few weeks because teams had not done this against Indy since Peyton's rookie year. Why? Because when you blitz Peyton and leave one-on-one coverage with Marvin and Reggie, that is an automatic 6 points for the Colts.
The first four games, Peyton was not healthy and neither was the o-line. The WRs were open, but he wasn't getting them the ball consistently. Now, he is healthy and making teams pay for blitzing. From here on out, we will likely see fewer blitz, Cover 1 defenses. If we do, expect the Colts offense to drop 31 on them.

Marvin Harrison: Still good despite what the "experts" say.

The second part of the domination was the Colts run defense. They held Baltimore to 51 yards rushing on 19 caries (2.7 a carry). They generated five turnovers on defense, with two coming from now-starting CB Tim Jennings. Indy also sacked Joe Flacco four times, with three coming from Robert Mathis. The team started with Josh Thomas, Raheem Brock, Keyunta Dawson, and Robert Mathis on the d-line. Their stunts and physical play pushed around Baltimore's offensive line. They shed blocks, rallied to the ball, and played fast Colts football. I'll remind everyone that on that starting d-line, there is not a 300-pounder in the bunch. In fact, Josh Thomas (the DE) might be the biggest guy on defense that they started. Yet, they dominated a big, physical Ravens offensive line.
This was as satisfying a win this team has had in the regular season in some time. They beat the snot out of a team that many think will be players in their division. The Ravens have some good young players on offense, and their defense is still a tough bunch. This was not some chump team that strolled into The Lube. The Ravens are good, and the Colts crushed them. Be sure to check out Rexx at Baltimore Beatdown for his analysis as well.
Bottom line, if you thought the Colts were simply going to "go away," you know nothing about football. Sorry, but teams like the Colts simply do not "go away." Injuries may hamper them for a while, but if you have actually watched this team (which few experts have done) you'd know they have no quit in them. That was made obvious during the Vikings, Jaguars, and Texans games. As this team gets healthy, they will again start to assert themselves, and this wacky season will start to shack itself out. And when the dust settles, our Colts will be there. This is still the best team in the AFC, folks. This was a big win in an effort to reinforce that sentiment.
Go Colts!

You should take over for Bill Simmons at espn. Instead of a blatantly biased Pats homer writing ridiculous crap we’d have a biased Colts homer writing the same ridiculous type of stuff but just flipped to be slanted for Indy.
I was happy to see yesterday’s performance but I refuse to act like they are “back” because of 1 game. If they play like this vs GB then i will be close to feeling that then if they do it again vs the Titans I’ll be fully behind them being “back” for the season.
One thing I will not do is try and blame injuries for their poor start. I agree injuries factored in but it wasn’t the key thing IMO. Once again, they had many injuries in 07 and dominated. Yesterday they had MORE injuries than the week before vs Houston and dominated. The difference is that Indy simply played smart and it showed. In the first 4 games they didn’t.
Oh and you are insane to say it is an auto 6 when you blitz Peyts and marvin is one on one since more times than not they haven’t connected for a TD when this happens but hey, it is you, the Colts hype machine so I shouldn’t expect anything less.

First of all
Welcome to Stampede Blue. I see you just recently joined, and we welcome you and your opinions even if they disagree.
Second, Bill Simmons is a paid columnist, and he is paid to write about subjects (football, baseball, etc.) that he is knowledgeable of. Otherwise, why pay him to write? This site is a Colts blog. EVERYTHING here is slanted towards the Colts. This is a homer site with homer fans who love their team.
Third, Peyton Manning, Jeff Saturday, and most of the Colts offensive players were healthy for the first time in months. They scored 31 points against the #1 ranked defense in football. If you think injuries did not play a part in their 2-2 start, you simply do not know or understand the game of football.

"Maybe ESPN should dump Hoggie in favor of shake. At least shake actually knows the game of football."
But I didn’t “PLAY THE GAME” (and pick up 172 concussions while playing it). Being small and unathletic clearly precludes me being able to form intelligent opinions about football.

He stated recently on one of his radio shows that some of the most ignorant stuff that gets spewed on these pre-game shows comes from former players.

Why do you think the Sabermetrics movement in baseball
had so many guys that never played professionally and was kicked off at the Major League level by a failed player (Billy Beane)? Playing the game can actually hurt your understanding of it. So much information that is tainted by your own perception and biases comes through that you’ll probably never be convinced that you are wrong even when it’s obvious. The guys that can step back and accept that their experiences are the “end all, be all” can be great analysts, but that doesn’t happen often.

They ARE back!
Sorry loregnum, but the Colts are definitely back. And, I’m not just saying this because of yesterday’s game. I saw signs of it in all five games. Yesterday was just the breakout game I’ve been waiting for. I’m not sure if they’ll win the rest of their games or not, but I am confident they’ll be competing in January. And, on a sidenote, it’s great to see Merrill Hoge fumble around with his words regarding Harrison today……‘um, uh, ummm, Harrison looks better, uhhh…..ummmmm.’ Yeah, no shit Sherlock!

I Agree
It’s not one blowout game that leads me to say they’re back. It’s been a culmination of the other 4 games. You could see Peyton and his receivers starting to find rhythm. You could tell the offense was starting to gel. After this game, you know the final 4 minutes of the Houston game was not a fluke performance by the defense. Anyone that has watched these games as critically and as analytically as most of us here on Stampede Blue just knew that this game was in-the-making. This isn’t to say we’ll go undefeated for the rest of the year, but this is the Colts team we are most familiar with. I’m sure we’d prefer the running game to get on track, but we’ve faced some of the top run defenses in Chicago, Minnesota, Jacksonville, and Baltimore. I’m not worried that we “can’t run the ball.” I am concerned with the injuries to Addai and Hart, though.

and, by the way, it is definitely an auto 6 when you blitz Peyton and Marvin is one on one.

Freakin' A!!!
I love it! Peyton is being Peyton, Marv’s being Marv, the run D’s being the run D! All is right with the world again. The Twilight Zone has let us out of its clutches.
I tanked on my picks this week, but who gives a crap? THE COLTS WON!! From the beginning of the game, not in the last few minutes….welcome back, you wonderful Colts!!!
He threw, they caught. Not that hard afterall. WOOOO-HOOOO
"I throw, you catch. It's NOT that hard!"

Regarding Simmons
“The ’08 Colts are like Amy Winehouse — they look awful and it should have ended by now.”
Correction: the ’08 Colts are like Katy Perry; young, hot, and stacked. Also, possibly kissing girls and liking it.

I see you made no mention of her singing ability
I’m going to assume that was on purpose, because the songs are awful.
Notice I’m not disagreeing with anything you did say…

Simmons
Is paid to be “funny” about sports, not know anything about them.
Anyone who’s ever read his page know’s he’s just a walking wisecracking Boston homer, always has been. Expecting otherwise is a bit silly.
ESPN’s a joke of a sports unit at the best of times, but at least with Page 2 it’s deliberate.

What a win!!!!! We are back!!!
How serious is Joe Addai’s injury?
How awesome was Mike hart’s one yard run? Is he hurt bad?
How right and natural it feels to be back on track…..
Hww gorgeous was yesterday’s win (from the aesthetic viewpoint) in the Lube?
GO COLTS!!!!!

Tim Jennings was also the one that tipped the pass that Bullitt picked off

Hayden
One thing I do NOT want the Colts to do is put too much faith in Jennings and not resign Kelvin.
Remember when almost all of us (including me) said that we didn’t think Tim Jennings wouldn’t make it through training camp? I’m very glad we were wrong.
Yesterday’s game had no negative. Every part of the game we dominated. Right now, we are 3-2 and in a favorable position for a wild card even after a slow start. I still see us winning the division by beating the Titans twice.

Katy Perry
Isn’t that hot.
Loved that game, Marvin looked immense on that first TD.
Although personally I’m loving nobody talking about us. No hype, no hype, no hype BAM – where did that come from and have some humble pie, you idiots in the media.

Interesting...
This is still the best team in the AFC, folks. This was a big win in an effort to reinforce that sentiment.
First convincing win since December of last year… It’s a little early to start fellating yourselves.
