Another quick recap

It would be typical that the day after the Colts suffer a 20 point defeat I have all kinds of crazy crap hit the fan, exasperating the annoyance of the loss to epic proportions. Full recap will be later today, but before I do that recap, I'd like to re-iterate something that was evident from Day One of the 2008 season:

There are no dominant teams this year.

Every team has been inconsistent. Some have been lucky and won anyway, but everyone is struggling through inconsistency. Want to know how nuts 2008 is? The Bears have the 3rd best scoring  offense in football. The friggin Bears. Oh, and with that great offense, defense, and special teams... they are 4-3. Green Bay, despite losing three in a row, is now tops in their division. The Cowboys got blown out by the Rams. The Chargers got beaten down by the Bills.

So, before you freak out and start demanding your pound of flesh from Tony Dungy and Bill Polian, take a step back and look at the big picture. The entire league is upside down. Everyone looks bad. Everyone is playing inconsistent. Power rankings and the like right now are totally and completely meaningless. Heck, we don't even have a real front runner for MVP.

This is one of the craziest seasons I can remember, and the only thing that I can say with any certainty is that the teams people think are good now will not be good later. And a team struggling now will likely be a team that represents their conference in a Super Bowl. It is just how things are shaking out in 2008.

im not ready to throw in the towel for this season either

Hell im not even ready to throw in the towel for this division. I think we can still win this division so long as we winning now, starting with Tennessee. Listen we all know its there for this team. They were putting up points against the #1 defense for heavens sake, we know we can still terrorize defenses. We also know people like Bob Sanders and Hagler will be back in the mix to help sure up the defense. This isnt over, not yet

Dominance

against teams like the Bungels and the Chiefs isn’t dominance in the league.

I’m not saying you guys aren’t good, because you are. Your defense is exceptional.

I still believe we will beat you on MNF. BTW, do you mute the sound on MNF due to Tony Korn-nut? Just curious. I would like to start a petition to have him removed…

You will have to exucse the Titans fan

For years, his team was the toilet paper the Colts used to wipe their butts with. Now, they get a little sniff of success and they think they are the 1985 Bears re-invented. When they lose to the Colts, again, they will retreat back into the toilet bowl from whence they came.

MCM

I love this site because it is never too “over the top homerish”. We all support the Colts through thick and thin, but BBS and Shake bring more of an analytical approach to their postings rather than saying “Your team sucks. We’ll kill you. Your QB smokes pole.” Their posts are what keep me coming back here day in and day out.

I ventured over to Music City Miracles and the first line of text I see is “once we inviscerate Indy next week”. They also are apparently making all their fans wear powder blue t-shirts, Hank Williams is doing the yuk-yuk or something like that, and they are wheeling Steve McNair and his life support system onto the field as honorary captain. Not confirmed yet, but I believe Frank Wycheck is baking lemon squares for the coaching staff.

I think you can officially say that it’s on.

Um What?

Let’s see, the combined record of the teams the Titans have beaten is 12-26 with and avg. record of 2-4. I wouldn’t call that dominant by any means. The only quality win the Titans have is against Jax.

I’m not kidding myself, the Colts are by no means playing as well as the Titans because they’ve not faced many quality teams either and lost to Jax when Ten didn’t. To say the Titans are dominant though??….erroneous

No dominant teams?

Titans are 6-0
Steelers are 5-1
Bills are 5-1
Broncos are 4-2
Giants, 5-1
Redskins 5-2

You get my point.

This season isn’t much different than most others at this point. There are just some different names at the top of the crop.

I’m not taking solace in the fact that the league is supposedly “upside down”, I’m taking solace in the fact that the Colts are 3-3 and having a bad start. Think about it…there are a lot of teams that would love to have a bad start at 3-3. I’m taking solace in the fact that the Colts only have to win two more than they lose this season and end up at 10-6.. giving them a decent shot to make the playoffs. I’m taking solace in the fact that two of our most hated rivals are struggling as well. The Chargers are below .500, the Pats look like they could crumble at any moment (oh yeah, and Brady is done for the year). The Colts can still do it, but I’m not about to discredit any of the other teams in the league for what they’ve done so far.

Follow-up

The Titans opponents have a record of 12-26.
The Steelers cannot protect Ben Reothlisberger, and play in the horrid AFC North.
The Bills were blown out by the Cardinals recently. The Cardinals.
The Broncos defense is one of the worst in football. And they can’t run the ball. And they play in a division with the Chiefs and Raiders (who suck).
The Giants lost big time to the Browns two weeks ago.
The Redskins gave the hapless Rams their first win two weeks ago and also almost lost to the Browns.

Losing a game isn't inconsistent

The Titans have done all they can. They won all their games.
The Steelers are 5-1 any way you put it. That’s what..a 13-3 season?
The Cardinals are actually a pretty good team. That passing attack has been great and the defense is underrated.
The Broncos have benefitted from a bad division. But there are almost always 2 bad divisions in the NFL every year, this year it’s that one and the Seahawks division in the NFC (can’t remember the name)
The Giants also beat 5 other teams and look pretty confident.
The Redskins have been inconsistent, but they look promising too. Good running game and efficient Campbell.

Losing a game isn’t really inconsistency…The Colts were viewed as a consistent team the past 5 years, but heck, they lost 3-4 games every year.

All I’m saying is is that we can’t completely throw out the idea that maybe some of the deemed “inferior teams” have turned a corner. And I can understand your point here, that we can’t put too much stock in the aforementioned teams, but I don’t think we should completely discredit them either.

by yellowsnow on Oct 20, 2008 12:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok
The Titans have done all they can. They won all their games.

Of course the Titans have done all they can. They won all their games… against bad teams. Will they continue to win when they play the good ones? Can’t say.

The Steelers are 5-1 any way you put it. That’s what..a 13-3 season?

And a quick exit from the playoffs, again, because they still cannot protect Ben Roethlisberger.

The Cardinals are actually a pretty good team. That passing attack has been great and the defense is underrated.

No, they aren’t. They can’t run the ball and they play in the NFC West, which makes their medicore D look better than it is.

The Broncos have benefited from a bad division. But there are almost always 2 bad divisions in the NFL every year, this year it’s that one and the Seahawks division in the NFC (can’t remember the name)

Agreed, and this helps illustrate my point: Perspective.

The Giants also beat 5 other teams and look pretty confident.

Yes, but they lost to Cleveland. No “dominant” team loses that badly to Cleveland.

The Redskins have been inconsistent, but they look promising too. Good running game and efficient Campbell.

The Rams, yellowsnow. The Rams. Could you imagine how this site would have exploded if the Colts had given the Rams their first win.

you colts homers

do realize that IF (should have said when, but that might hurt feelings around here apparently) the titans beat the colts, that will just be one more team with a losing record that we have beaten right? 3-3 when houston absolutely handed you a game and jacksonville darn near did the same does not make you one of the “good ones”.

how many points do you get for winning in years past?

by hal41605 on Oct 20, 2008 3:56 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

So

You wouldn’t be optimistic if you were a Steelers fan that they could figure out how to protect him over a 16-game season? You were pretty damn optimistic about the Colts (and their depth, by the way) and look how things have turned out.

I don’t buy your arguments. The Rams and Browns aren’t above .500. So what? Any given week teams like those can win. We lost to the Bears week 1, and I’m sure there were people using the same logic you are right now. The Bears? Beating the Colts? They must really suck, right??

Teams lose. That doesn’t always make them a bad team.

I’m kind of torn in the middle right now. I think there is great parity throughout the league this year. Granted every year the cliche phrase “any given sunday” is true, but this year is the epitome of that saying. Look at what the Colts did two weeks ago. Blew out the Ravens, and then got slaughtered by the Packers. The Giants looked just as dominant until they themselves were dominated, etc etc etc.

I’m not trying to discredit the good teams right now, but I’m also not going to say they are the best.

We Colts fans did not pay $720 million dollars in public funds to build a brand new stadium that will get opened on Sunday Night Football by Jim Friggin Sorgi.

Packers

When I finish my recap it is pretty safe to say the Packers did not “slaughter” them. The colts had this game, but penalties and bad play by Peyton Manning cost them. That first INT for a TD was a back breaker.

Don't forget to mention the packers secondary.

I watched the game (and I had picked the Colts to win, so was hoping Manning could pull it out – until I gave up with 8 minutes or so to go). But don’t blame Manning too much. The packers secondary covered the Colts like glue.

i agree that the game was much closer

than the 34-14 score indicated as two pick-sixes will always make it look like a blowout. but i don’t think i’d agree that the Colts ever “had” this game. really the only point of the game when i thought the Colts had the upper-hand was after they effortlessly marched down the field to score on their first drive – especially because Dom was running hard and the line finally looked like they had it together. but Green Bay got the ball back and immediately re-took the lead, scored again on their next drive and were at least 10 points clear of the Colts for the rest of the game.

the penalties were killer, as was the first pick-six, and another game-changer was Vinatieri’s blocked field goal. if they get that, the Colts are only down two scores with 24 minutes of football left.

win at Tennessee next week, and they’re back in the Division race. lose, and the AFC South is out the window but the Wild Card certainly isn’t. Look at the non-Division leaders playoff contenders right now: Jets, Ravens, Patriots, Jaguars, Chargers, Colts. even with as bad as Indy has looked, i’d still think they’re good enough to beat those teams out for one of the two postseason spots.

Dominance vs Good

BBS was correct in saying there are no dominant teams. That’s not to say there aren’t good teams. There are several teams that are good this year and can make a push for the Super Bowl. The point is that there isn’t a clear-cut “shoo-in” as there has been in years past (Patriots, Colts, etc.). Also, one cannot take the overall record and determine whether a team is good or great. Good teams do, on occasion, lose to bad teams; records can be deceiving. There isn’t a single team that has been dominant in all phases of the game. There isn’t a single team that doesn’t have various issues. All any team can do is try to fix the problems and fight it out until the end.

by TouchdownMonkey on Oct 20, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

green bay's game plan

actually reminds me of the play of the titans in past years… They used high risk plays like going on 4th and 1 and onside kicks early. This is a bit of desperation. They KNEW they had to get up to a lead early to hope to beat the colts. Unfortunately especially with the early penalties we took, it worked. Realistically their offense only scored 20 points and one bad pass and a fluky tip gave them another 14…

An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...

by bluegirl on Oct 20, 2008 1:49 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It is what it is

Green Bay Head Coach Mike McCarthy doesn’t hesitate to go for it on fourth and one, as history has shown that he thinks his team should be able to grind out a yard when you need it. Otherwise, why are you playing football? I wouldn’t say its desperation.

Green Bay Packers Secondary also has a history of aggressive, contact orientated play. One talking-head (gammons) described GB’s defensive play as “ferocious”. If you can beat our secondary, then you’ll beat the Packers.

by PackaCracka on Oct 20, 2008 2:31 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree.

It’s gutsy, not desperate. I wish we had gone for it on 4th and 1. You make a decision like that and it works out, its a huge momentum changer.

And a team in the NFL should be able to get 1 yard.

..and an onside kick early

it wasn’t just going for it on fourth and one… it was that AND the onside kick… How often do you see that? but if you looked at the numbers you’d probably find more teams try it against the colts to keep the ball away from peyton.. And onside kicks are risky and a bit desperate early in a game… Think they’d do that against a division rival?

Obviously, in the NFL, ANYTHING can happen

But if we lose next week to Tennessee, which doesn’t seem out of the realm, we’re down FOUR games in the division, and at that point the division title becomes almost out of reach.

Rarely is there a game that’s a must win, but if we want the division, next week IS a must-win.

Agree

This has been a freaky season so far and it is why that while I am unhappy with the Colts performance I still feel that if they can get in some kind of grove they could make the playoffs ok because it is a possibility 8-8 cold get the wildcard in the AFC this season.

This season of mediocrity is obviously a positive to the Colts situation but at the same time it kind of makes their play even more frustrating because they could be very comfortable in the AFC if they were playing like they should be. I do not buy that the Bills are as good as their record and I don’t buy that the Titans are as good as their record (but if the colts come to play Monday and get blown out then i will change my tune on Tenn) and the Pats are well, who knows what you get with them this season so that leaves the Steelers as the only IMO true AFC elite team up there in record.

Here’s hoping the team can turn things around Monday and can finish 10-6 at the minimum. One really positive thing to me is that IF this team does get going and finishes the reg season strong and makes the playoffs playing well I think they would have the best shot at making the SB in the AFC because they should be clearly better than the Brady-less and old aged Pats, the Chargers (I fully expect them to win the west because denver sucks) are IMO over rated and the Colts playing their game should win vs the Steelers playing theirs.
