MVP of the quarter

I got to thinking while I was bored at work and tried figuring out who could be labelled the unofficial MVP during the first quarter of the 08-09 season.  To make it Colts related as well, I'd like to see your opinion on who is the MVP for the Colts during the first quarter as well.

League MVP:

I have two people in mind.  Oddly enough, both of them reside within the same division; arguably the best division in the NFL at the moment.  They are both QBs, playing on the two best teams in their respective division.  Who are they?

Eli Manning and Jason Campbell.

I'll start with Manning first.  Eli has played nearly perfect in the Giants first 4 games, and in doing so, he has lead the defending champs to a perfect 4-0 record in this young 2008 season.  I swear to god that winning the Super Bowl was (obviously) the best thing to ever happen to Eli's career.  He's progressed and improved so much from where he was last year at this time it's mind-boggling.

Pretty much everything I just said about Eli can be said about Jason.  However, the one thing Jason has over Eli at the moment is this little gem: Out of 153 pass attempts, Jason Campbell has zero, I repeat, zero interceptions.  This tells me he is playing smarter and gaining chemistry with his receivers and the rest of his team despite having to deal with multiple head coaching changes, and multiple offensive coordinator changes.  Impressive indeed.

Just for the hell of it, I'm going to name my rookie of the year.  I think it's fairly obvious that Matt Forte is the clear cut rookie of the year.  He's practically the entire Bears offense and blows Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson out of the water (not that it would be too hard to show up Cedric Benson).

Now then, the MVP for the Colts.  This is a really hard decision, but after a while of thinking about some of the good plays, and some of the bad plays this season, I started to get a migrane and decided that my default answer would just be the Special Teams.  They're the most improved, and most consistent thing the Colts have going, so there.

Your turn.

Freeney?

He’s on pace for 12 sacks (and 8 forced fumbles) while not even taking his regular number of snaps and with the D getting run on.

That’s just it, he’s apart of a defensive unit that has been sub-par concerning the run which is a big deal. Be a different story if he was the only one out of the lot worth a damn at the moment.

I'll add a couple more names

NFL MVP: I agree with Eli and Campbell, but I’d add Jay Cutler in there as well

NFL ROY: I think Chris Johnson should also be in the conversation with Forte. As great as the Titan Defense is, I don’t think they are 5-0 without Johnson.

Colts: Besides Peyton being the obvious choice, I think it could go to Freeney or even Melvin Bullitt. He has filled in admirably for Sanders, and he’s been a force on Special Teams as well.

Chris Johnson does indeed deserve an honorable mention. I just have Forte ranked higher because he’s “the guy” in Chicago.

Some stats on Forte/Johnson

Rushing:
     Forte – 107 carries, 383 yards, 3.6 ypc, 2 TDs
     Johnson – 85 carries, 381 yards, 4.5 ypc, 2 TDs

Receiving:
     Forte – 22 catches, 172 yards, 2 TDs
     Johnson – 12 catches, 69 yards, 1 TD

Forte is a little better at receiving, and Johnson looks a little better rushing.

Rushing/Recieving

Interesting, you would have guessed the opposite, since Forte is a big back and Johnson actually played WR for a while in college.

I think there is a couple things here

One is what KingRichard said, in that Forte is a featured back, and Johnson shares time with White.

Second, Tennessee has been up late in most games this year, meaning they aren’t passing as much as the Bears. Also, Forte had 66 receiving yds this week against the awful Lions, which always helps.

It’d be a different story if the Titans actually had a passing game. I still think Forte, for the touches he gets is a lot better than Johnson.

Definitely Eli

What about Joe Flacco? For a rookie, this kid is showing great presence and decision making.

Agree with Special Teams for the Colts.

MVP: Eli Manning. He’s the most valuable player on the by far best team in the league. Manning has been amazing ever since Week 17 against the Pats.

ROY: Forte. Damn. I wish we would have gotten this guy…

Colts: Freeney. Special teams haven’t been the game-changer that Freeney has been. Freeney is back and better than ever.

ROY -- Jake long

Do you think that the improvement in miami may have something to do with the improved line play? It is hard to pick out one person on a line, this is a bit out there I realize, but both ronnie brown and ricki williams have been running well…

Special teams definitely deserve a nod this year as they are at least solid.

Brown was great last year too

before he blew out is knee though. Sticky Ricky was also hurt pretty quickly.

true

but pennington has looked better than any other QB they have had in ages, and that has to be at least in part to decent protection (which miami QB’s haven’t had in a long time…)

Another one is Matt Ryan in atlanta. I haven’t seen much of him play, but he can’t be screwing up too badly or they wouldn’t be winning.

I guess part of me thinks it is just too easy to give a rookie award to a running back… I’d rather look for other potential

I hate Matt Ryan

but he hasn’t been a miserable failure like I hoped. He played great against bad Ds and bad against good Ds.

So....

Green Bay doesn’t have a good defense? Or he just got lucky catching them with so many injuries?
