Anyone else getting worried about Ugoh?
This was a response from Phil B at the Indystar to a reader question/comment:
PHIL B: Colts coach Tony Dungy said the decision was made to start Charlie Johnson because they thought Johnson was sharper, and took more of the reps in practice than Ugoh, who played sparingly on special teams. We can't help but wonder if there's more to it. Dungy says it wasn't a demotion, but stay tuned. I mean, Ugoh never showed up on the injury report all last week, so we thought he would be ready to go.
Tony has not looked very sharp this year even when he has played. There were lots of questions floating around about him in the offseason, and now it seems we are starting to see why. The scouting report on Ugoh out of college was that he might not have totally been comitted to football. Are we starting to see that?

The commitment to football issue
was him missing spring practice while being one of the best throwers (shot and discus) in school history.
I’m not worried.

Yes
I just can’t help but wonder. Dungy has been talking a lot about how guys aren’t on the details and haven’t been playing with passion/energy. I’m guessing they are a little frustrated with Ugoh’s effort and are trying to light a fire under his butt. Hopefully it works.

Worried
Yes. He hasn’t played all that well, and he keeps getting hurt. A LOT.
So yeah, I’m starting to wonder if we shouldn’t have gone after someone else.
I hope I’m wrong.

there aren't many instant LTs
around in the second round. There wasn’t another tackle drafted until a round later and that guy is out of the league before his second year. Marshall Yanda out of Iowa was the only other tackle drafted outside the first round from that class to start as a rookie and he started at right tackle on a very injured line and was moved to guard for this year. Unless you wanted the Colts to trade up in the first round (Joe Staley was taken before Anthony Gonzalez, but he hasn’t been clearly better than Ugoh, so you would have to trade into the top 5 for Levi Brown or Joe Thomas) or go with Charlie Johnson at LT, Ugoh was the only other option. Ugoh needs to get healthy and I think they are trying to do that by sitting him even after he was able to practice.

That's why I love ya Shake
You are definitley the best of the “Educated Always Positive Guys” in the Stampede/18to88 Blog circle and I’m glad we have you here to balance out some of us who probably tend to become pessimistic too soon.
It’s a long season and the Colts have not played well, but in previous years they’ve started so strong and finished playing poorly to mediocore so maybe we turn that upside down this year. Squeak buy in the early part of the season, start putting it together by mid-season and get on a roll at year end and into the playoffs. I’ll take it if that’s what we have, I’m just seeing lots of holes on this team that I didn’t expect to see this year.

I would call my feelings on the Ugoh situation
confused rather than worried. I don’t know what’s going on and there isn’t any real info out there.

And when I say not clearly better
I mean he’s been worse but didn’t have anything to back it up until now.
Tackle Joe Staley, No.28 overall, 2007: Staley played every snap at right tackle as a rookie, and moved to left tackle to replace Jonas Jennings this season.
Staley shows plenty of promise to turn into a solid starter for a long time. He is protecting quarterback J.T. O’Sullivan’s blind side with mixed results, though. The 49ers lead the league in sacks allowed, and Staley has surrendered a team-high five sacks, according to STATS, LLC.

Keep in mind
We traded a first rounder for him.
So I kinda look at him like he’s a first-round pick.
I guess I have higher expectations of Polian and Dungy, and I think it’s safe to say he hasn’t met those yet. He gets hurt like Utecht did, every other game. He needs to toughen up and improve. And I think that’s a fair assessment.

staying sound
Seems like it may be more of an issue of staying healthy. He missed games last year, and is injured early again this year.. But it is worrisome that he didn’t play. Has anyone asked the question of why in the media anywhere?

09 draft
There will be a glutton of OT prospects in the next draft. Do you think we take another OL in the 1st to push Ugoh?

or replace Diem
he is not having a good year so far. It’s only 4 games so he can put it together, but he’s been struggling.

I've noticed that.
I have been telling my wife during the games this season that Diem has not impressed me for the money that we’re paying him. I also remember thinking that a couple of times last season, though this year it has been more troubling. He has been great, I believe, at times in the past. Hence his contract. Right now, however, is a different story.

I'd draft an OT early and an OT late
If as you say OT is a deep position in the 09 draft (I’m not a draft tracker so I have no idea). I’d draft an OT early and late.
IF Ugoh is not getting it done, then someone to replace him is a must.
IF Ugoh is OK, then you should still draft an OT fairly early to replace Diem, who has been pretty horrible this year. We should also look to draft an OT later to build up our OT depth like we did our G/C depth this year.

possbile OT 1st rounders
Oher – Top 5
Andre Smith – top 10 if he comes out
Eugene Monroe – could be top 10 but most likely 15-20 range
Max Unger – has played all O-Line positions
Phil Loadholt – Massive OT, late 1st rounder
Alex Boone – depends on workouts but could be late 1st roudner, early 2nd
possible 2nd or 3rd rounders: Jason Smith (Baylor), Xavier Fulton (Illinois), Andrew Gardner (Georgia Tech)
I may be forgetting some and most likely most of these guys will slip due to the fact the position is so deep.
If available, I’d go for Unger.

You Forgot
Michael Oher, the best O-line prospect since Orlando Pace. He makes Jake Long look like Robert Gallery. Oher should be the number one pick in the draft.

umm he didn't
and the word I’ve heard is Oher’s resting on his laurels a bit and needs to step it up. I’m pretty sure New Era Scouting has him behind Andre Smith now, assuming Smith comes out.

I still think
Oher will be the better OT. Smith is looking better right now but he hasn’t always and his coaching helps him look that way. Oher does have a bit of a lazy streak but he’ll turn it around. He knows how good he is and he seems to playing not get hurt right now.

and Gallery was a great prospect
nearly everyone everywhere thought he was the safest pick in the draft, that he’d be a cornerstone LT for the next decade.

Does anyone know Diem's contract status?
For some reason I was thinking either this year or next was his final contract year. I know it’s Saturday’s last year of his contract.

ColtsCap.net does
through 2011. pro-rated bonus is 2.3 million a year so they owe him minimum 7 million after this year.

you know the season isn't going well
when we’re talking about next year’s draft after only 1/4 of the season!

not true
I’m always lookin forward to getting the last paick in the first round. As of right now, we actually have a 1st rounder so that makes it sweeter.
