Thoughts About WR's
Reggie Wayne- It is obvious to me that the Colts put Reggie through some tipped ball drills this past week because he just knew where they were. After the first half of the season where tipped balls would lead to Peyton picks, they're starting to lead to touchdowns.
Marvin Harrison- Is anyone else pissed off about how hard everyone in the media is on him? It's true that he's been dropping passes, but that doesn't mean he's not the player he used to be. I still believe that the timing between Peyton and him is off. He burned everyone on those 2 drops Sunday. You can teach hands, not speed. Also, I bet come playoff time Marvin's timing is back. Look for him to absolutely erupt.
Anthony Gonzalez- If I remember right, he had a first down grab yesterday. He also had a drop in which he was going to get completely smashed. I think we're going to see more of him going forward.
Pierre Garcon- The one catch he had yesterday showed why we haven't seen him earlier.
Roy Hall- Where is he? I'm just waiting for him to explode on the scene. I think he has the ability to be a Brandon Marshall-esque receiver without the tears.

Marvin's Done, Dude
Yes, I know…he’s a first ballot Hall of Famer and has given the Colts year after stellar year, but he’s done. His body is in Indianapolis, but his mind is in Philly. Would I like to see him erupt? Yes, but all signs this season have pointed to him being dead weight on a team that desperately needs everyone pulling their own. I’d like to see the Colts ship him to the Eagles this off-season for a high draft pick. Maybe then he’ll stop pouting and play football the way we all know is capable of. It’s heart-breaking to see him play like Clarence Verdin and drop balls that cost us points or field position.

I'm not ready to stick a fork in Marvin
And no one else should be either.
Had he caught those two dropped TD passes…everyone here would be saying “Marvin’s back, we told everyone so!!”
He really burned that corner on one of those plays (pass underthrown/miscommunication?/bad route?), and the other play was a tough catch but one we have come to expect of Marvin. I think he’ll figure it out. I don’t think it’s Peyton’s fault, although he has been a little more inaccurate this year, he’s been playing well for awhile (especially when he throws to the other receivers). Something is going on between Marvin and Peyton that is causing a few head-scratching moments every game..but haven’t they both shown over the past 10 years that they can be on the same page? I think the Colts should consider playing Gonzo out wide more and perhaps Marvin in the slot some, but I am still optimistic about him.
Whether we cut Marvin at the end of the year or not, he’s with this team this year. He can be a weapon on this team, maybe not in the capacity of year’s past, but he can still be a weapon. And I hope the opponents keep playing him like Pittsburgh did, because sooner or later he’ll catch those 2 TD passes and they will be a big difference maker for the Colts.

I completely agree. If Marvin is able to hold onto 3 passes this season, everyone would be praising him and claiming, “d0000dd marv is back mangles!!!!111one” He still has the moves, the speed, and the elusiveness he did a few years ago and it’s only a matter of time before he and Peyton get back on the same page. Besides, most teams are probably doubling Wayne now so there’s plenty of potential for Marvin to have some clutch/important catches.

LOL…it’s all about expectations. We’ve come to expect Hambone hauling in 90 with double figure TDs. Now I expect him to cut routes short, alligator arm balls out of his reach and then go sulk on the sideline because none of it is his fault. The act is getting tired. If he catches those two TDs, I will rejoice but will not declare him back. I’ll give Peytie the credit for making a perfect throw.

If a frog had wings
he wouldn’t bust his ass a-hoppin’.
Yeah, IF Marvin had caught those passes, people would be saying he’s fine. But he didn’t catch those passes, so there saying there’s something wrong. I love Marvin. I desperately want him to be the Marvin of old, but I don’t think he is.
At this point, any reasonable person has to admit that there is something really out of sync with the Peyton-Marvin connection. Marvin’s game was never about blazing speed; it was about great route-running, great hands, and an almost psychic connection with his QB. At this point, it looks like he has none of those things. To be fair, he’s run some good routes, but have you ever seem so many times when he and Peyton are not on the same page? Where it looks like Marvin ran the wrong route and Peyton yells at him in the huddle? I haven’t. Have you ever seen so many drops, especially at crucial times? I haven’t. I don’t think Peyton is completely healthy right now; his passes don’t seem to have the same zip as they have in the past, and I haven’t seen so many overthrows ever either. But Peyton nontheless looks pretty much in sync with Reggie, Clark, and Gonzalez. But it seems like every time he targets Marvin, something goes haywire.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m not hating. But something is very clearly wrong here. And I see people say, “Oh, well, they missed a lot of time together, they’ll come around and start clicking again soon.” When exactly do people think this is going to happen? The season is 9 games old — more than half done. That’s an eternity in the NFL. There have been some injury issues (Peyton, OLine, etc.) to deal with, but I would think that 9 games would be enough time to recapture the connection that has been in place for a decade. Seriously, these two knew exactly what the other was thinking for ten years, now they look like they’ve never played together before.
I sincerely hope that a month from now Marvin will have broken out and you can lord this over me. But right now I just don’t see it. My non-thinking, knee jerk reaction when I saw Marvin leave the game yesterday was “thank god.” We’re 5-4 and need to play much better from here on out to secure a wild card. I think we’re running out of time for Marvin to get back in sync with Peyton and stop dropping passes. Pittsburgh players have said that their game plan was to dare Marvin to beat them. If not for a fluky tipped-pass TD to Reggie and two perfect-timing INTs by Roethlisberger, it would have worked. I for one, would like to see more of what Gonzalez can do. At least defenses would have to respect his speed.

That was actually my point. Those few catches (or near catches) are all that is seperating him from being “back” and being “done.” I think everyone in the Colts organization were underestimating the severity of both Marvin and Peyton’s injuries. But the perception (to me anyways), is that they are slowly but surely getting back into the swing of things. Clearly, neither of them are at the top of their game. But if they continue to improve (because I’m sure you noticed that in week 1-3 those near catches were more like wtf’s?!) then I have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, I hear ya
And I can’t really argue with what you say. Not to dumb it down, but I think ultimately this is a simple optomist-pessimist thing. We both share common hopes (Marvin busts out) and common observations (it hasn’t been working this year). But I’m the pessimist here; I think he should be a little farther along at this point in the season, and am surprised and concerned that he’s not.
But I do have an optimist side: I think Gonzo should be more involved in the offense. And I wouldn’t mind if Marvin was the WR3 right now. I’d love to see Marvin as a situational receiver. I think he could be very valuable in that role.
And again, I hope my doubts are proven spectacularly wrong.

The problem is
he didn’t make those two TD passes. He’s been missing passes he historically would make. And, he’s been a major contributing factor in losing key games at the end of last season and the beginning of this season because of fumbling. I’m not sure what’s going on with Marvin. I’m not ready to stick a fork in him yet. He did have a beautiful catch for a first down which kept a critical drive alive. Something’s going on though, and I hope he shakes it off quickly and returns to his old reliable self. This has been a bizarre season to say the least. I feel like I’m living in Seinfeld’s bizarro world, up is down, north is south, ugly is beautiful, and Tennessee is Indy. WTF!

Reminds me of what we heard at the beginning of the season
That is, old receivers lose their hands first, and Marvins hands have been great but they have failed him this year. I’d love to see him play another year or two, because his moves are still ankle-breaking but there’s just no way to justify 13 million against the cap for someone who has dropped about 4 TDs in nine games. That said, I’d love to see him stick around because he still makes those first-down grabs like no other, still commands a safety over the top, and Gonzo has shown flashes but I’m definitely not comfortable with him as our #2 as long as he’s still running third-down routes a yard short of the sticks.
All that granted, Braylon Edwards has had a worse case of the drops this season and no one is declaring his career over.

I don't know about Marvin.
But nobody should play the “old” card…has anyone been watching Armani Toomer? He’s older than Marvin and the only consistent receiver that Eli goes to….Smith is good, Hixon is great and Plax has been…well…missing.
I say let’s allow the season unfold. If Peyton trusts him (which I admit, I’m seeing less of these days) then I will trust him. I still am of the belief its the timing issue, I believe he still has the skills and the speed.

Marvin is done
Sad to say, but it’s true. His hands are gone. His speed will come next. Let’s take a wide receiver this draft.

WR in the draft
even if they do cut Marvin WR probably doesn’t need to be high on their list (as opposed to NT and CB if Hayden leaves). The seem pretty committed to 2 TE sets. They are starting Gijon Robinson over Gonzo, if that doesn’t show they don’t want Clark+3WRs to be a normal feature of the offense nothing will. Also with Gijon, Santi and Tamme they have the talent already in place to stick with 2TEs.
Without Marvin, I’m imagine they would start Wayne, Gonzo, Clark, Addai, and Gijon/Santi with Tamme coming in on obvious passing downs like the do with Gonzo right now.

Undersized
Our wide receivers are all undersized except for maybe Wayne. I think other teams are now preying on that, when we go over the middle, they’re making sure we remember our trip there. There was a hit on Clark that was so much worse than Gonzo’s. Gonzo probably should of had that catch, and Marvin has no excuse for his in the end zone, other than he’s afraid to get hit. Which to me isn’t an excuse, it’s more b.s. being the size Harrison is, he’s got to know he’s gonna take some hits. I don’t know if he’s out of gas or what, but he’s not playing to the level of his salary, which at the very least needs to be restructured at the end of the year.

switch 'em
I think Marvin and Gonzo need to switch roles. Let the young guy that sleeps in the high altitude tent play every down and let the old wiley veteran make come in for the crucial passing downs.

Why the diss on Garcon ??
He has done well returning kicks and he was clearly a project at WR … this was known from the get go … with the way this offense struggled early on it would have been hard (and illogical) to work him into the mix … and the Colts rarely use 4 WR sets anyways …
I thought the catch he had was fine, it looked a little underthrown and he came back and made the grab …. one pass, one catch … no complaints here
I’m still extremely anxious to see what Roy Hall can do in a game as WR … but if/when Marvin hangs em up … I think we’ll be ok … I think Hall has the skills to play (when healthy) and i think Garcon has the speed to be a nice #3 …. I’m excited to see these guys get some more playing time and show what they can do

The Colts need to ditch hall and find someone who isn’t injury prone. I think Roy Hall is jinxing the entire team with his misfortunes tbh.

It’s impossible to tell if the pass was thrown behind him, or he overstepped where he was supposed to be. Only the Colts staff know that I guess. But I liked his play in still making the catch.
I’m not convinced in general, though. Not that we’ve had a lot of evidence to check out.

Manning looked right ...
but was getting pressured so he looked left and let it rip … not sure if it was an exact route, but hey he made the catch … and i’m still holding out on Hall as well … he has convinced me that he is a pro at being injury prone, i just want to see if he can play … he has the size, have you seen him up close ?? He is huge … i think he could get great position on smaller DB’s …
i just wish he could get healthy, but in no way do i think he is “jinxing” the team with his misfortunes … that just sounds kind of silly, a #4 WR jinxing the whole team …

Up close
Hall is a big dude. He came to the sidelines and signed for us at training camp. Only he and Coach went the extra mile to do that. Nice guy, I told him that I believed he would be great for the team one day.

Hall...
I saw Hall at training camp his rookie year. Dude is an absolute beast. At one point he had a blocking assignment for a run and I don’t know which defensive back it was, but he up ended him and took him to the turf. People sat there in disbelief. Dungy personally walked over and I assumed told Roy to turn it down a notch. Can’t wait until he is on the field.

Marvin/Reggie
I posted this in another thread- I think Gonzo has two feet in bounds, Reggie only has one foot down, and Marvin is sitting in the 6th row eating popcorn. As far as potential in wide receivers goes, I’m not liking what our situation is going to be after this year.

Boldin is awsome but won't be a colt
I would love to have a big receiver, but the colts run a timing offense, this why the receivers are all close to the same size and speed. They’re all close to 6’ and 190 lbs with 4.4 speed. Boldin is a 240lbs receiver with 4.6 speed he is a monster to bring down, but, he is going to take a little longer to complete his rout which will affect the QB receiver timing.
I still think Marvin can turn it around, age affects speed and atheleticism not hands. Baseball players have to have soft hands and they play the game into their 40’s
