Flags in the NFL
Is anyone else sick of how many flags are being thrown in the NFL this season? I understand that some need to be, but the sheer amount I see is staggering. Not that I love Florio, but he has a story about it right here.
It's not even the amount that upsets me, it's when they pick them up and say there wasn't a penaltly. In my opinion, when a ref throws a flag, he better call a damn penalty on something. During the 49'ers Cards game Kurt Warner was flagged for intentional grounding, but the ref decided to pick it up. He literally said that he "conferred with #14 and he said he was throwing it to #34 so there was no penalty on the play." That is absolute bullshit, since when can a player affect a flag like that. Later on in that same game, Singletary threw a challenge flag that the ref let him pick up. Yet again, if you throw a challenge flag, you better challenge something that happened on the damn field.
These flags are slowing down the game and only leading to the ease of throwing more. If you throw a flag, call something god damnit.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

While think you made good points, I think your views are a little misguided. Do you expect refs to be perfect all the time?!?! What color is the sky is your world? I prefer when refs throw too many flags because they are making sure they don’t miss a call. Even if they have to throw a flag every play at least we all know they are making sure they call the game correctly. And as far as that singletary flag goes, were yu even watching the game farris6659?!? He threw the challenge flag on flase pretenses when he tried to challenge a play that the refs were still discussing. Ultimately they made a ruling that was something Singletary couldn’t challenge. If you’d like to start watching football the games are on sundays, mondays, and thursdays. We’d love to have you!

Are you kidding me?
Screw the false pretenses, if you’re able to throw a challenge flag and pick it back up on that play, what means you can’t do it on another. The simple fact is, with those “false pretenses” you can say that you simply misunderstood the play and pick it back up. You could hypothetically challenge every play and just say oh, false pretenses.

dude would you rather have a game where they catch penalties and do a good job or a sloppy game where they let things go just so they can get through it! I’m also not a troll. Just because ive only been a member since this morning doesnt mean that im trolling. Im just being realistic. I know you guys might think im being harsh but im really just looking at it from an unbiased perspective

Refs
are there to call obvious penalties. When WR’s around the league are getting up and making the flag calling motion after every time they fall down, you know the refs are too involved in the game. Call the facemasks where the guys head is jerked around, call the roughing the passers when the passer actually gets roughed, but other than that, let the players play the game.

some of which have been playing very well and propose a Wayne for Tatum Bell who was a free agent YESTERDAY. You aren’t going to be taken seriously.

When it is your first post on the site
You are usually taken seriously. There are others around here who can make jokes like that, and we know it is a joke.
We always welcome new users, but you shouldn’t start off with jokes, especially when you don’t make it obvious you are joking. Sarcasm doesn’t go over well on the Internet. Especially when you are new.
I’d also recommend getting to know the community here, before jumping into the deep end. It will make you a much more valuable member here for it.

but I guess that’s a joke as well

Forget the joke
It’s the Reggie Wayne being out of his prime comment that has everyone suspecting troll-ism. There just isn’t anything out there showing him to be on the decline. His stats right now project to be a little bit less than last year, and obviously that has more to do with the O-line, lack of running game and of course, Peyton’s injury.
More than anything, when someone makes an outrageous comment like that, they understand the need to back it up with some objective measure.
I would hold off on voting to get more information, but if I were forced to decide right now, I’d go with this being trollism.

That and the fact that
Reggie was Peyton’s only consistent target last year.
Dallas Clark, Anthony Gonzalez, MarHar, all missed games last year; Reggie didn’t

And
Most of last year was without Harrison, which ballooned Waynes numbers up. Even though Harrison isn’t spectacular right now, he is taking away some of the balls from Wayne.

hey i wasnt joking the whole time. ive been a life long colts fan and have been reading this blog since its inception. i have always noticed that people on this board only show colt love and complain every time someone is critical. if you want to only allow posters that show colt love then i havent grasped the rules of stampede blue fully.

I'm the complete opposite...
I want flags thrown if the infraction is there. If you have a rule for holding, pass interference, picks/rubs, illegal contact (that second tip-drill wayne caught sunday… illegal contact, classic case of it… walt coleman’d.), etc… ALL of it should be called. Why? Because if its not ALL called, then the refs are subjectively picking and choosing which infractions to call… and that incorrectly alters the outcome of games. Once you allow them to choose what fouls they call (which appears to be the case with offensive holding) you’re destroying the integrity of the game.

My main argument...
I meant for the main idea of my post to be that once a flag is thrown that it shouldn’t just be picked up, especially on challenges. I just feel as if not a single 4 downs go by without a flag anymore. Yes, I want the refs to call penalties, but I honestly believe that they’ve gotten entirely too flag happy.

I’m just glad that you saw the error of your ways and took a step back on your argument. I understood you were trying to make a point with the original post, but you went completely overboard to try to get everyone to listen up. I appreciate that you were willing to be a big man and admit that you were wrong.

Are you kidding me?
I took a step back on my argument? Reread my post. I put one sentence into the whole too many flags and then I put a complete paragraph on picking up flags. I still fully support my argument. I wasn’t wrong. Your response was an absolute backhanded compliment.

It was a compliment nonetheless though. I was genuiniely appreciative that you are probably one of the few people on this board that wouldn’t completely stand behind an argument that they make when they’ve been proven wrong. You sold out, but at least you came to the correct conclusion in the end.

I hate to keep harping on this but,..
This is just too suspicious. Supposedly, you’ve “been a life long colts fan and have been reading this blog since its inception,” however, you just now signed up and have been unbelievably active in the past 24 hours or so. After countless months of reading this blog, you finally decide to sign up and immediately become one of the most active members on here
.
By no means does this confirm anything, but it is really suspicious
Ok I’ll stop now. Looking forward to a full game against Sage Rosenfels especially with Slaton starting to maybe hit the rookie wall. I would love a relaxing game to watch…

I can second that
The last couple of weeks have been stressful to watch to say the least. I hope this team is a lot more prepared for a division rival than they were last time they met. Our defense is certainly getting it back together, and it will be interesting to see how the new Johnson plays now that he has been with the team for more practice time.

It’s always interesting to me that when two people are presented with the exact same information they can come to two completely different conclusions. I would argue that the reason I’ve become the most active poster immediatly on this board after being a reader since I can remember is becuase I’ve had so many opinions that I’v never had a chance to put out there for others to discuss. The reason I joined was because I didn’t like the direction this board was heading with pure Colt love and noone making any cases to keep us grounded. As soon as I joined I started commenting what I thought because I was a member who could state what he’s been thinking about for years and years.

consistency
I think what we need to see in the refereeing is consistency. At least within a game. The problem doesn’t arise when different refs throw the flags differently. If they are consistent themselves you know what to expect and how to play. It is when refereeing group throws flags some times and not others that fans get frustrated. And when they throw a flag then huddle forever then pick it ‘there was no flag on the play’. That wastes everyone’s time. You should call the obvious stuff and leave the rest. Too many penalties spoil a game and in a two minute drill it can actually give a team an advantage since they stop the clock…

If you don't want the penalties called...
remove them from the rule book, its that simple. I’m not saying I agree with every rule in the book 100, I am saying if its in the rule book, it should be enforced 100 of the time. Let me tell you, if they called every penalty every time it was committed, people would STOP holding, STOP with illegal contact, etc…
And your statement that officials don’t need to be consistent from crew to crew, just in game, is incorrect, in my opinion. Teams have enough to do with only a week between games to practice. They have to game plan for each individual team and the infinite possibilities of play calls, formations, trick plays, etc… They should not have to coach their players based on which officiating crew is calling their game that week.
Further, people are getting hurt because of the refs inconsistency… Look at the Hou @ Minn game. Jared Allen put his helmet into Shaub’s knee cap TWICE without a flag. Almost as horrendous as the non-call was the fact that Allen was only fined $50,000, but not suspended. Horrible, horrible, horrible. In knee hits, horse collar tackles, helmet to helmet hits, etc… I think the player should be suspended for the duration of the injured players injury. If your horse collar tore his knee up and he’s on IR… see you next year, Roy Williams.
But again, if the NFL wants to remove holding, pass interference, illegal contact, etc… I’m all for it, but don’t put it in the rule book and then enforce the rules when you feel like it. And in reality, I’m wondering if, by subjectively enforcing rules, the NFL isn’t in some sort of violation of the RICO Act, since, ya know, the NFL makes money off of games, teams that might benefit or suffer from calls would make/lose money based on play off appearances, and the all important vegas part of the equation.

and consistency is a big argument
for the refs being full time. When you only have to worry about a job part of the time you do the job of a weekend warrior.
Problem with a lot of penalties like holding or pass interference is there is always going to be room for interpretation. It is like a strike zone in baseball. But players get to know what any one umpire is like and live with it because both sides are playing withing the same interpretation. The problem is when crews are inconsistent so a team doesn’t know what they can and cannot do.
Madden has made the point a few times that if you wanted you could call offensive holding by the O-line on almost every play the way the rule it written.
I used to hate Hantak, but I’ll give the old fart credit. He called a tight game, but he was consistent in how he did it.

Your point is valid, but it supports my point..
Yes, I fully believe you could call not only holding, but illegal contact/d holding on 99% of all plays. But DO IT. Then teams will coach their teams to stop holding, etc… Or, as I said, remove it from the book. I don’t want this ‘call fewer penalties to speed up the game’ stuff. Remove the penalties or call them all. The NFL makes billions of dollars every year, I think they can take the time to get it right, one way or the other.
And yes, they need full time refs, but they also need to allow criticism of the refs. I hate how the NFL comes out and says that every call is correct, even when its obviously not. Don’t insult the fans’ intelligence.
