Peyon Manning stat...
Through 10 games, Peyton has attempted 380 passes, putting him on pace for 608 passes, which would eclipse the most passes attempted by him in a single season by 17. Now, he's not old or anything, but I'm not sure this much throwing can be good for the soul. And while you'd think having a resurgent running game would lower the number, he had his second highest attempt #s against HOU (46, 49 was highest on opening night v bears). On top of this, Manning is currently throwing 6.76 YPA, which would his lowest average since his rookie year.
I only threw the YPA stat in there because I was surprised it was so low (i guess I'm not surprised if I actually think about it, the long ball hasn't really been there this year), but I don't really blame that on Peyton.
The number of attempts is a bit worrisome, though. Im not saying that in a 'we can't let Ben Roethlisberger throw the ball more than 12.3 times per game, otherwise we'll lose' sense, but more in a "I dont really want to watch his arm fall off any time soon' sense...

well
I’d much rather watch Peyton dink and dunk than watch the opposing QB do it against the Colts D. The time of possession was in the Colts favor this game 35 minutes to 25. If that means a few more throws for Peyton then so be it.
throwing the ball
The more Peyton throws the more I like it! He’s usually on target, only the receivers keep dropping passes. That’s the main problem. The receivers need to step up and catch those near-perfect throws! Last night, Peyton attempted 46 passes and 30 were caught and I think at least 7 were dropped. Catch those passes and Peyton is 37 for 46. That’s pretty amazing and almost unstoppable.
Stats...
are good for a number of things such as backing up an argument and attempting to predict results, however only one stat matters and that’s the W’s and L’s. So if Manning has to dink and dunk his way down the field in order to win, that fine. It’s all about getting the W.
The best player on our team...
should get the ball in his hands.
I'm not commenting on whether or not its good for the offense..
but If you all remember, and I’m sure you do, because Colts’ fans never forget, the Colts’ started putting Manning on a pitch count in the preseason in the 2006 season, to keep his arm more fresh as he got up there in age. My concern isn’t ‘omg you can’t have a QB throw the ball 1000 times a game’ (As a matter of fact, I stated that in my original post), its not ‘omg you have to call a better game’ or ‘zomg peyton manning is the reason we lost those 4 games’, it was just to call attention to something that Manning has never done before (if he does, in fact, go over 600 attempts. It could slow down considerably when we play the Browns, Lions, and Bengals) and something that is relatively rare in the NFL. Kurt Warner, who slings it with the best of them, has never gone over 546. Drew Brees had never gone over 550 until last year, when he hit an astounding 652.
Peyton's pitch counts.
I remember during Spring Training Camp – “Summer School” – whatever you want to call it, they had him on a pitch count then. After talking to guys like Marino and the like, Peyton decided it was the best way to keep his arm good longer. I’d prefer he not have to throw the ball 46 times during a game myself. But…what can ya do?
"I throw, you catch. It's NOT that hard!"

I don't think age is automatically an issue...
I know Brett Favre is an exceptionally tough bastard, but watching him throw near-supersonic footballs on Thursday night, you’d never get the impression that his arm is wearing out from age/overuse etc. (It’s actually worth looking at the highlights on NFL.com/video. Bomb after bomb that looked capable of seriously wounding any receiver who wasn’t paying attention.)
So until manning actually starts feeling pain or loss of strength, I’m not going to fret over his number of pass attempts.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
I don’t think you can really expect to control the number of passes in a game. You can go in with a idea, or a goal/game plan. But sometimes those don’t work, and you do what does work. As well he is throwing this short passes, not bombs 46 times a game. He doesn’t have a real major league fast ball anyway. He’s a timing and intelligence kind of QB. Physical skills diminish first anyway, and then you just got the smarts. I think based on that, and determination, you got a player that’s gonna play as long, and as good as he can, for a good while. Pitch counts or no pitch counts. Greg Maddux like, after all the physical was gone, it was his mind that got the job done.
