Seriously, are this many NFL players THAT dumb?
We have all heard of Donovan McNabb's gaff about not knowing a game can end in a tie. It now seems clear that many more NFL players didn't know this. Seriously, are this many players that friggin' stupid? There was a tie as recently as 2002. I mean, when the fans know more about the rules than the players do, that is a pretty damning indictment of the players, and does not speak well of their knowledge of the game.

I have to admit
McNabb’s comment floored me. And, did he really think the superbowl and playoff games would end in a tie? I’m mean, didn’t he ever stop to think how a team would advance? Unbelievable. I’ve always like him. But, I see him in a new light now. That was clearly one of the most stupid comments I’ve ever heard.
my understanding
is that he thought they would keep adding OT periods until a team won. I don’t think he thought a tie was ever possible, regular season or playoffs.
mcnabb is an idiot
there has been a tie since he has been in the league.. 6 years ago… what a moron… nice work andy reid
What I heard and thought I understood
was McNabb wondering how a game could END in a tie? That tells me that he didn’t think they would keep playing until a team won, but finish in a tie instead after the rules were explained to him. And, then he went on to say that it would really potentially be a difficult rule and potentially mess up playoff games and the superbowl to end in a TIE. But he said if those are the rules then we have to live by them. A dumber comment was never made by a football player.
clarification
What I meant to say was that ’that tells me that he initially thought that they would just keep playing indefinitely until a winner was decided, but after the rule was explained to him, he realized it would end in a tie. But, then added that a tie would really mess up the playoff games and superbowl. Go figure.
I didn't either
I thought ties were only for pre-season, after all, it seems like a tie would screw with division rankings and the like. Then again, I would expect the players of the game to know more than me about the rules.
Roethlisberger guessed half the league’s players didn’t know. Ward, a former Super Bowl MVP and an 11-season veteran, acknowledged he was among them—and he played in a tie only six years ago.

He said this
With that stupid, shit-eating grin too I’m sure.
“It’s so good to see a player enjoying himself out on the field.”
I hate NFL TV announcers.

Are they just covering for McNabb?
Or are they really less familiar with the rules than my 10 year old son?

Oh and did I mention the fact that refs review the rules of OT with the captains prior to the coin toss? hahaahfihadsifhaifhasoidfhoasidaiot

I forgot about that, but you are exactly right
“We will play 1, 15:00 overtime period. First team to score wins. Each team will have 2 timeouts, and all replays will be initiated by the booth.”
It really is ridiculous this many players had no idea.
I can't blame the players for not knowing all the rules
Heck the refs have proven that they don’t know them. I know that “can/can’t end in a tie” is a pretty big one, but it is a less frequent possibility than say… illegal forward pass.
Great point!
