Recap Week Nine: Colts 18-Patriots 15
Bob Sanders after his fourth quarter INT against the Patriots last night |
Wins feel good unless, of course, there is something sinister beneath the surface that eats at you. I'll never complain about beating anyone, let alone the Patriots. The Colts have now beaten them 4 of the last 5 games. Remember when they used to own us? Remember the old days when just any old Patriots QB would start and beat the crap out of the Colts: Hugh Milen, Scott Zollak... Tom Brady. Well, those days are over, thankfully. Even without Tom Brady this year, the Patriots have an excellent rushing attack, solid defense, great special teams, and they do not beat themselves.
Until last night.
A Patriots team that all season did not commit stupid penalties did so last night. TE David Thomas shoved a player well after the whistle on a key fourth quarter drive. It turned a 3rd and 1 into a 3rd and 16. The Patriots failed to convert, and that was pretty much the ballgame. The Pats also missed on a sure TD when Jabbar Gafney pulled a Rache Caldwell and dropped an easy pass, placed right into his hands, in the third quarter.
For a change, the Colts caught the breaks. The Pats didn't. Let's all do a happy dance.
But under the surface lies a deeper concern: After three weeks of good run defense, the Colts gave up 140 yards to 3rd and 4th string Patriots running backs. Laurence Maroney is done for the year. Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan were deactivated because of injury. The Patriots should have managed only 40 something total yards rushing minus those players. Instead, they ran wild. Prior to the game, Tony Dungy deactivated NT Daniel Muir.
Why was he deactivated? We don't know.
Muir was not hurt, but yet did not play. This makes absolutely no sense, and seeing as how a nobody RB like Jarvis-Green-Whoeverthehell ran for nearly 4 yards a carry on the Colts, deactivating your best NT makes about as much sense as asking Peyton Manning to throw left handed for the game, just for gits and shiggles.
Add to that the mind-numbingly bad play by the linebackers on 3rd down. I mean, OH MY GOD... it was awful. It did not matter if it was 3rd and 8 or 3rd and inches, the Pats converted. Draw plays, screens, Cassel running... garbage stuff that should be sniffed out and destroyed when teams run it against us. If I am calling the EXACT play the Pats are running from at home pre-snap, that means the players on the field should know what is coming too. How many times did the Pats run out of the shotgun. They gained, like, 6 yards a carry every time. WTF? TACKLE. THE. GUY.
I'm also sick of the "we need better gap control" crap. Somebody just hit someone. Just do something! I'm not going to kill Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis because Cassel's drops were 3 steps and the ball was gone. My beef is with Brackett (who was as bad last night as I've ever seen), Session (who is lost in coverage), and Hagler (who is still getting himself back into playing form). The linebackers last night were an embarrassment, and they better kiss Peyton Manning's size 15 feet all day Tuesday after their film sessions, because Peyton was the reason the Colts won this game.

Peyton is back

Yes, I think it is safe to say Peyton Manning is back. He was angry. He was determined. He was not going to let another team walk into his house and crap on his new carpet. Peyton dominated the Patriots defense; had them guessing all night. Despite a d-line that is known as one of the best, Peyton was hardly touched all night long (and unlike Matt Cassel, Peyton's drops were 5 to 7 steps). He picked apart the Patriots, and did so without a consistent running game (again).
Having Bob Sanders return was also a big boost. The secondary fed off his energy, and they played very well. Tim Jennings (the new whipping boy for fans) continued to play strong. Notice how I said continued? Jennings is a fine CB, and all the bitching and moaning about him is no different than the bitching and moaning against Charlie Johnson (who is an excellent o-lineman) or Rob Morris. Once Hughes and Hayden return, this secondary will be fine. The Giants won a Super Bowl last year with a much, much worse secondary. They are the least of my worries.
Oh, and another game, another clutch Adam Vinatieri FG. This time from 52 yards out. Money. Again, fans who say they have "lost their faith" in Adam are simply spoiled fans who do not appreciate greatness when it plays for their team. Without Vinatieri this season, the Colts would be 2-6 right now. Kickers like him do not grow on trees, folks. If you think this team would be just fine with a scrub like Jay Feely or Nate Kaeding kicking their FGs, you simply don't know what you are talking about and need to go sit in the corner. Adam's kick looked good from 60 yards. His kickoffs have been outstanding all season. Special teams play, in general, has very nearly rescued this club.
Adam Vinatieri is money, and anyone who disagrees is flat out wrong. It is literally that simple. I don't know how many more examples I need to show in order to prove that point.
So, while this recap might sound a bit angry despite a win, it is because I am tired of seeing the same. damn. thing. occur every 3rd and long. This team is too good to have mistake after mistake like those occur. The defense has to do its job and get the opponent's offense off the friggin field. The Colts have the #1 red zone offense this year in the entire NFL. Did you know that? Despite all the injuries, when the Colts get in the red zone, they score TDs! The problem is the offense does not get the ball enough because they defense is too busy dry-humping the opponent when they should be blasting them off the field.
At some point, and hopefully soon, the Colts need to man up and take charge of themselves. If this means benching a team captain like Gary Brackett to send a message, so be it. Something needs to happen. The passing game is on track and the special teams are finally good. The defense now needs to catch up, or they will get booed LOUDLY in their home stadium.
All that said, I'm happy for the win, even though I don't sound it. Hey, some of you like it when I get angry. A few of you have said I've been a little too Sally Sunshine of late. Well, you folks now have your wish. I'm mad, despite the win. That said, both the Colts and Patriots will make the playoffs this year. Right it down, and woe to the teams that play them. Despite my angry recap, both teams are as well coached as it gets, and while the pretenders are having their day in the sun now, the real high caliber NFL teams are finally getting healthy enough to flex a bit. When December and January come, the Colts and Patriots will be in the mix. If anyone is writing them off, they are a fool that will soon get their ass handed to them.
Thanks again to MaPatsFan and the folks at Pats Pulpit for continuing to stoke the best rivalry in all of sports. Our teams will meet in the playoffs this season. With this win and the Jags and Texans losing, the Colts have finally created some separation in the AFC South. Next week, it doesn't get any easier: The Steelers in Pittsburgh. The Colts, in their entire history, have never won in Pittsburgh. Never. It is never easy, but when you want to be great, it shouldn't be easy.
Go Colts!

Can I give a game ball to Belichick?
In addition to the dropped TD and personal foul, we benefited from some strange and wonderful decisions by none other than the “Genius” head coach. Challenging the 12 men on the field non-call early in the 2nd half when what… 5 yards would be on the line? And then the running on the field to call a time out just as your team successfully converts on a 4th-and-1? Whoopsie!
I loved our offensive play but our defense was… well… offensive… It’s going to be a tough game next week in Pittsburgh.

Vinatieri
He’s an average kicker who is getting paid like an elite one. The Colts have been the 4th worst team in the league on FG/XPs through the first 8 weeks. After the 52 yarder Vinny is now 6 of 9 on the season. A scrub like Kaeding has missed the same number of field goals, on double the attempts. Feely on the other hand is a scrub and is the kicker for one of the 3 teams worse than the Colts on FG/XPs.

I have to admit...
… that I’ve been a wee bit jealous of the Jags and their guy Scobee. But I still love that it was Vinatieri who kicked the game-winning FG against the Patsies.

He is the modern day Vanderjagt, minus the asshole comments.

Kaeding
The guy has missed so many big game kicks in the playoffs it isn’t even funny. When you need a big kick, Vinatieri is the best there is. Kaeding lost two playoffs games for the Chargers by missing gimme kicks. Please, do not even attempt to compare the two. Stats can only show so much.

I seem to remember a certain Colts kicker missing a game winner
against the Chargers from gimme range.

considering how he has screwed us.

Bironas sliced a 40 yarder against the Pack, of course, but came through in extra time.
Vinny, well, he’s just not that good any more. Last season – zero 40+ yarders. This season…67% FG conversion. Yes, he still makes big kicks sometimes…and sometimes he doesn’t. Kicking’s a crap shoot year to year in the NFL anyway, but I think we better find someone a bit more reliable next season.

is pittsburgh that good?
I think playing pittsburgh may be a lot like playing the raven … Tough defense, but not so much on offense. Rothlisberger has taken a beating this year, and has never been more than competent. And their running game hasn’t been the same since Bettie retired. With Randy Moss and Wes Welker the pats are a much more dangerous offense that anything the steelers can mount offensively, and I would argue their defenses are comparable.
This game still doesn’t look easy, but I don’t think it will be as hard as beating the patriots.
and on the subject of the pats, I am really beginning to think you can make the argument that it is the system not the QB. How many backups, who have never started come in and go 5-3? And are at the top of their division. Yes is in not as good as Brady now. But is he as good as Brady as a first year starter?

Pittsburgh
I wouldn’t say they aren’t good. They have a tough defense and their running backs play well. The OL has had issues protecting Ben, so that’s a point of attack for us. If we can put the pressure on, I believe we can pull it out. Also, a quick lead will help too. If we can jump ahead and cause them to dropback more than run, that falls into our favor. It’s still going to be a tough game though. I’m going to try and pay attention to some details tonight (as I hope the coaching staff does also). Every team has weaknesses to be exploited.

Roethlisberger
Is much better than competant. He’s not Brady or Manning, but he’s tough, ballsy and he’s willing to put that team on his shoulders every week despite being knocked up and getting bugger all protection.
They’re probably 20% better than the Pats, who we really, really struggled to beat at home and they’re playing really nasty in their house. Plus we made two no name RBs and Matt Cassell look like offensive studs this week…next week we get a Superbowl winning QB and Fast Willie Parker.
If we want to win, we’re going to have to play an awful lot better than we did this week, I suspect.

Keiaho...
We missed KO last night. I am of the opinion that KO would have been far more effective blowing up the draws and general Pats running game. It’s what KO does. He wasn’t there… our LB corps suffered as a result.

comments by Madden
I think Madden made a very good point about the patriots being able to run. As he pointed out, we had two safeties deep as we had to account for Randy Moss out there especially with both our starting corners out. This meant Sanders especially often couldn’t come up to help stop the run. And that left us undermanned on the line which I think was a bit part of the problem with our run defense. Now good linebackers should still be able to stop the run BUT we often do rely on Bob to be there to blow up the play.
And I will give our D credit as they did blow up a lot of cute little plays the pats tried to run. They just couldn’t get the big stop on 3rd down.

kickers
I think Kaeding is as good as Vinatieri. Unfortunately, Vinatieri has been the reason for the Colts losses. I love the way he is kicking off deep. That really helps prevent run-backs for TDs. But, his field goal kicking has been somewhat suspect…..let’s be honest about this.

sorry
I meant Vinatieri has been the reason for SOME Colts losses…..certainly not all of them. In all fairness, he’s also been the reason for some wins as well.

I think Vinny is overpaid
but I think the Colts have to keep him. Rookie kickers are a crapshoot. The extra money they are paying Vinny is worth the risk of getting stuck with a guy who sucks instead of just being ok.

Don't Forget
When we signed him, we were still reeling from Vanderjerkoff’s shank in the playoff game against Pittsburgh. Impulse decision maybe, but I can’t say I’m not happy he’s here.

Vinatieri
I’ll never forget when I used to watch Grammatica kick off for Dungy’s Bucs. Talk about a worthless kicker. He routinely would kick off about to the 20 yard line. The other team would almost always start the drive with great field position. I’m so glad we don’t have that hack as a kicker. Makes me really appreciate Vinatieri. Did the Saints ever get rid of Grammatica? If they didn’t, they’re stupid. Anyway, kicking off is where Vinatieri is really earning his keep somewhat. But, yes, he’s probably overpaid, because his field goal kicking has been inconsistent.

I think they IRed him. Although I figured he’d be cut after the Minnesota game. His miss at the end cost them.

Count our blessings
If someone has any idea how the Colts will win @ Pittsburg, please lets us know,. So Manning had 2 TDs against a mostly rookie Pats secondary. I never heard of many of the guys now playing D for the Pats. The Steelers D is formidable. What is the over on the # of sacks Manning takes with a 5 – 7 step drop? The Colts have to find a running game in a hurry – I say give the bulk of the carries to Dom. Manning is dead if he doesn’t have a credible play-action. The entire team will have to play hard a nd furious to have any chance of a W. But my worst fear is that the Colts suffer a serious injury or two playing smashmouth football with the Steelers.
by Perseverence on Nov 4, 2008 2:10 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Why waste the time even trying to run? No one can run on the Steelers, and now you want the worst rushing team in the league to “set up their running game?” Are you nuts?
The Colts need to do the smart thing here by spreading them out early, stay in the no-huddle offense and just pray that they wear the Shittsburgh defense down. This way, come the second half (assuming the can get a decent lead) they an play ball control and come out with a win.
The King of anti-fail.

You hit the nail on the head
The defense is horrible. They rarely force the opponent to punt. I think thats why so many teams go for it on 4th down against us. The odds of that defense stopping 4 plays in a row is close to one in infinity. I was so happy when Belichek called that timeout and decided to punt because I have no faith in our defense this year.
