Maybe once they cut Harrison they can offer Saturday a fair price.

Keeping Saturday would be more valuable, he can still play and he's one of the smartest centers that's ever played the game.  But if Harrison doesn't take a cut in pay this offense will be finished next year, they need depth badly especially on the offense.  They seem to be real thin at WR, RB, OL, even a quality backup quarter back would be nice.  They could use 2 more wide receivers that can at least play to the level of Gonzo, and another runningback, or maybe a better runningback than Addai(he doesn't seem tough enough)  The offensive line they have, needs to stay intact, they have played better each week, if they stay together they will get better, Saturday is just a great veteran to have even if his skills start to decline a little.

I got slaughtered last week, but it seems like my "counterpoints" from my post last week were consistant with the game I saw, especially on offense, and let's quit talking about MVP for Peyton Manning, I'm ready to now say that his brother Eli is a better quarterback at this moment in their careers.   The offense was awful.  3 points on offense.......Manning 127 yards passing, 2 ints.  Running game is actually worse then on paper after I confirmed that the Browns was playing the pass the entire day.  Cleveland's pass defense is near the bottom of the league so they said on television and yet they couldn't get a touchdown.  My whole Post last week was how it seemed like the offense didn't work anymore and defenses have caught up with this team, and I nearly got censored off.  Last Sunday also proved to me even the teams with the worst defenses don't respect this offense anymore. I think the offense ranks first or second in the red zone, and 1st on 3rd down conversions.  But with all the money wrapped up in these players on offense they should be in the top 5 in every category, at least AFC.

I keep hearing the NFL is a league of what have you done for me lately.  This year the Colts offense has underperformed drastically for some reason, by now they should be clicking and they are not.  Shake told me that the offense is down as a whole this year, that it wasn't just one person.  I thought possibly Harrison was the Clog, but I think he can still play even if he's not his old self, I was wrong about him.  But now, I'm convinced that the defenses have figured out how to totally eliminate the BIG PLAY from this offense.  The audibles at the line of scrimmage just don't seem to work or even disguise what their doing anymore.  So why not just run the play? The playcalling at the goaline in the first half was awful, you can say "well if they would have scored, we wouldn't have this conversation"  I would say they got lucky for trying to run 3 straight times when you have a 99 million dollar quarterback and a couple 20 million dollar receivers.  You just have to scratch your head, don't you?  These were the Browns, if they were the Giants, you come away with this win feeling pretty good, but what's the score going to be when they play the Bengals and Lions and when will people start suggesting a new strategy on offense.

Great Colts win, but either the offensive players, the so called "money players" are underperforming badly or the system itself is just not working.  Maybe it's me, I'm sure one of you guys will have a great "counter stat" for me I can't wait to hear them.

Ok but seriously, the only person I thought played poorly was Manning. The running game was pretty good, Harrison was on it and made some great catches (again), and if Reggie Wayne had bearclaws for hands he would have had a TD. Oh and let’s not forget about the offense completely blowing a gimme TD down at the 1. So basically, if the Colts had converted on those plays that they normally make (remember, nothing is 100% here, sometimes shit happens) the end result could have been 24-6. Now, given the circumstances (mainly the weather), that’s a very respectable score and would have been considered a blowout.

I don’t like using hypothetical situations in arguments, but really, look outside the box here, the Colts weren’t that bad yesterday.

Also, you can’t really use that first half ending bomb that was intercepted against Manning.

Again

Your basing all this after just ONE FUCKING SEASON!

Its like your saying, “hey if these guys underperform for just 1 season, just one, all of them should be cut or they officially suck”.

If that were the case, then Freeney would have been gone and our defense would have been at the bottom of the league in every catagory. Do you remember our team back in ‘05 when we went 13-0 to start the season? I didnt hear anyone complain of Manning doing so badly in the Cleveland gane that year, where he completed less than 50% of his passes and didnt score a single TD with 2 INT’s.

Yes the offense was awful yesterday, but one season does not dignify how bad or how much a player has lost. Get a grip.

..

I can agree that Harrison’s contract should be restructured.
But these money players have been top 5 in categories in the AFC for many years now, and I’m not ready to stick a fork in their scheme just yet.

It was just one of those games. Normally Addai doesn’t fumble, Vinatieri doesn’t miss, red zone offense does better than it did (especially with the goal-line stand), Peyton doesn’t throw a bad pick. Really, it looked like the weather got to them. The commentators kept talking about how Derek Anderson’s passes kept sailing. So who knows, but it was a win, away from home, with some bad breaks in the middle, a lot of injuries, and a couple key players for the Colts out before the game even started (Saturday, Bob). I’m just happy that the Colts won, and the defense kicked butt.

by yellowsnow on Dec 1, 2008 1:35 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I hadn't realized how few times Addai has fumbled.

week 17 of his rookie year was the last regular season fumble, 390 straight regular season carries without a fumble. He also fumbled in the Baltimore playoff game that year. He had 436 straight carries without a fumble counting the playoffs

Times have changed

Yes, the offense is not as dominant as it once was but I also don’t think it’s declined as much as we’ve seen this season. A big part of the reason is injuries to Peyton, Addai, Saturday, Harrison (last year), Clark, etc. That’s basically an injury to every major contributor besides Wayne on the offense. On top of that Addai is not as good as Edge, our left tackle by committee is not as good as Tarik Glenn, Wayne is not as good as Harrison was in his prime. The offense still has the ability to be top 5 though because we do have players like Clark who is a major upgrade over TE’s of the past (Dilger, Pollard) and Harrison/Gonzo are a better 2/3 recievers than we had until Wayne developed into a solid 2nd reciever. Wayne isn’t as explosive as Harrison was and therefore yes, we don’t quite have the big plays we used to.

However, saying that we need upgrades that you list is laughable if not impossible. Maybe if this were MLB and we were the Yankees.

I agree that the Colts could use some O line and definitely D tackle depth but really that’s the only area I see a need. The offense will get better for the rest of the season. In fact its been much better until yesterday’s speed bump.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Dec 1, 2008 2:24 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

There are 5 teams with a better record than the Colts

I’ll call those the “good teams”

Giants, Their top two WRs are Plaxico Burress who has gotten himself suspended and shot himself keeping him out of some of the few games he’s been healthy for, and Amani Toomer who has less than 500 yards this year and hasn’t topped 800 since 2003. Wayne would easily be the Giants #1. Jacobs is a great back, but has awful hands. Ward is better out of the backfield, but isn’t the receiver and blocker Addai is. Addai would be the 3rd down back. Clark has nearly double Kevin Boss’ yards and receptions. He also has more of both than any Giants receiver. Clark would start for the Giants as a slot WR/TE

Titans

, I don’t even have to go there on their WRs, Wayne is worlds better than anyone they have. Addai would beat out Fat Lendale to share carries with Chris Johnson. Lendale is a fat blob who could probably be a solid back, but would rather pull up to the table for seconds. Clark has similar numbers to Scaife and blows Crumpler and any Titans WR out of the water.

Bucs, The Bucs leading receiver was let go by the Niners last year. Wayne is far better than a guy off the scrap heap. Addai would definately see a ton of time now that Ernest Graham is out. Dunn is having a solid year, but he’s another guy off the scrap heap, cut by the Falcons. Addai would be sharing time at worst in Tampa. Clark would start over Jerramy “The Rapist” Stevens, Clark nearly doubles all his numbers.

Steelers Wayne has more catches, yards and than both Ward and Holmes and more TDs than Holmes. He’d start. The Steelers loved the Willie Parker-Mewhelde Moore combo so much they spent a first round pick on Mendenhall. Addai would split time at worst. Clark kills the Steelers 3rd WR (which is what he’d be since the Steelers like big TEs and have two good ones).

Panthers We finally get to a team with even 1 receiver in Wayne’s league. Wayne is way better than Moose Muhammad who the Bears didn’t even want. The Panthers also drafted a first round back last year, but DeAngelo Williams has broken out. Addai would be the lesser partner in the tandem (like Stewart is now). Clark more than doubles Jeff King’s production.

So of the 5 teams that have better records than the Colts there is one that Addai might not see tons of time on. Wayne would start on all 5, Clark would be the TE or slot WR for all 5.

If you guys don’t like negative opinions on the Colts: 1) don’t read/respond to them 2) go hide under the covers.

They are 8-4, they are better than a lot of teams right now. They are also majorly flawed. Maybe its Manning’s health, maybe its the Oline, maybe its the running backs, I’m not sure. They aren’t nearly as explosive as they were in years past. And yes, part of that is the fact that they are getting 2-covered to hell and back, but they aren’t busting the shell with ANY seem passes this year. They aren’t hitting the great corner routes between the zones this year. They aren’t creating explosive plays. They are winning because Manning is throwing 50 times a game and he’s super smart and super accurate. If we had any QB other than Manning, ANY, including Tom Terriffic, we wouldn’t have near 8 wins (and no, we wouldnt have more than 8, either).

Than jay has said in all of his posts in this thread combined.

Nobody is claiming this team is without flaws. All he does though is throw out one liners and questions, gives very few of his own opinions, and when he does, they are ridiculous.

What you just said could have saved this post a long time ago. Dissenting opinions are great back here, when they are backed appropriately. jay doesn’t do that.

I got dumber reading this thread

Seriously, do we need to discuss whether the Colts have talented players on offense??

It has been up and down this year. Want to know why??
Saturday is out. Lilja, done for season. Ugoh has had an up-and-down season (and missed some time), Glenn retired pre-season last year. Rookie center and guard in right now. Oh yeah, and everyone’s favorite punching bag Charlie Johnson has been in all year. Granted he hasn’t been too bad. Peyton was hurt in the beginning of the year and rusty. I think the same could be said for Marvin, coming off a serious injury last year. The Colts haven’t had a good consistent running game due to the injuries to the O-line, therefore affecting play-action passing. It’s a double-edged sword. Oh and the Colts have played some pretty good defenses this year, too. I believe the Colts’ schedule was considered the #2 overall hardest schedule pre-season, behind the Steelers.

To be 8-4 through all that adversity is resilient.

by yellowsnow on Dec 1, 2008 5:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I guess it just proves that 31 other NFL teams would be grateful for a “struggling” colts offense.

To put no weight in injuries would be ignorant

The Colts’ players are playing well despite the injuries, they are 8-4!!

by yellowsnow on Dec 1, 2008 5:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

years the colts scored huge points

we didn’t have an offensive line that had at least one different starter most weeks. That is probably the biggest problem this year. I imagine if you look back at the stats (shake?) the consistency on the line is probably directly related to the points our offense scores..

It is so funny-“I think Manning has lost it”- watch out for mister Jim Sorgi, your skills a a clip board holder have proven you well and with Peytons poor preformance at QB(becuase he cant win games by more than 10 points any more or bring a team back when behind) we believe you have earned a starting QB spot. You will be givin the top WR free agents this league has to offer. Great names such as Aaron Moorehead, Craphonso Thorpe, and some dude whose last name begins with an “A”. Also running back Kenton Keith and tight end Byron Fletcher. We’ve also added Mike “GKOAT” Vanderjact to or roster. What were we thinking when we handed out all this money to big name players when winning is so cheap?

If he is trolling then everyone (myself included) is feeding him. If he isn’t then we are kinda of being dickwads (douche was already used). As has been said before he is giving opinions, which most of us think are stupid but heck at the beginning of the year I thought Dan Federkeil would be playing DT because that is what he played in University.

Homer Soda

To be honest I disagree with the writing on this site a lot. A lot of homer writing but that’s common on a lot of sports blogs. I think Jay16 makes some good points about the Colts offense and everyone’s getting a bit too upset. I think he’s right the Colts could use more depth at places which is obvious by the poor play of their O line. The Colts aren’t as good as they once were because as I said before Addai is not as good as Edge was and Wayne is great but is not as good as Harrison was. There are possibly a dozen recievers that are either better or on par with Wayne where as Harrison was thee best possibly Randy Moss hung with him from time to time but was not consistent like Harrison was. Same with Edge, I think he led the league his first 2 or 3 years.

The new triplets are a bit inferior and yes the Colts aren’t going to be what they once were. Maybe the biggest reason is that their O line is a shell of its former self without Saturday and Glenn.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

They are getting there...

If you have watched the last 3 games, Antonio Johnson is starting to get dominate. I saw multiple plays yesterday alone where he penetrated into the backfield through a double team and redirected the running back into a linebacker. I doubt he’ll be a Warren Sapp type player, but even if he’s only 80% of Sapp, when you have Freeney and Mathis, thats all you need. With Dawson out, I wouldn’t mind seeing them go back to last years line of Freeney – Johnson – Brock – Mathis. I think it would work well now that we have a true run stuffing tackle.

LOL

You guys remember when BBS put up a pic of Dungy and the defense under the bus after the Jags ran for 375 in 2006? I don’t even think there was this much spirited discussion in that post.

Seriously though, the Colts are a team that has a great quarterback, a great safety, a great (albeit not as dominant as before) wide receiver and a great center. And right now the center is out, the safety is out, the quarterback isn’t quite as sharp as he was and the wide receiver isn’t 28 anymore.

I still think they can get it done. Marvin and Peyton have more than each other in the WR corps than ever before. Saturday can get healthy. Bob can get healthy (and we’ve all seen what a healthy Bob can do to the Colts in the postseason). Peyton still leads the team to victory, sometimes solely on his shoulders. The defense has been rocky, but I have been impressed with the run D over the last 5 games, half of which Bob has been absent from. Hard to imagine how good it may be with him back. Just like in 2006, if this team gets healthy and in the postseason, it can be dangerous.

I never count them out, especially with Manning playing. And, sometimes it takes a defensive play to preserve a win, but overall, it mostly comes down to Manning in my opinion.

What a waste of time

I hate myself for reading all the way through this thread. Just stop answering Jay’s questions and make him look something up. Its called Google, Jay. Use it.

He clearly does have an addiction

He gets a rise out of pissing people off apparently. He knows he’s doing it and continues to do so while acting all coy and innocent-like. And yet people keep responding because if he has the last word its like he won the argument. Quite the little scheme he has going on. But we can defeat him if we all just close the browser, step away from the computer, and go watch football.

Jay16 is a Pysch Major

I’m convinced after 15 minutes of “trolling” through this thread that Jay16 is a psych major and he’s writing some paper on the dynamics of social networks and sports fans. I’ve never before seen a “troll” take the persona that he has. His only point seems to be to get people riled up. He clearly knows nothing about football beyond what ESPN tells you on Sunday mornings. All of his points come merely from highlight reels and limited anecdotal observations. The only explanation is that he’s doing a study in sports forum psychology. I vote we just start ignoring him unless he wants to make more educated and knowledgeable points.

but his profile says he's a professional musician

and Jay16 would never be dishonest with us

not quantity.

Did you read the thread

He had no opinion. His only opinion was whatever opinion other people didn’t have. He didn’t know football and made no effort to learn. He knew exactly what he was doing in antagonizing everyone on the site and then pretended to be all innocent and hid behind that censorship bullshit.

yes it's a travesty

guy who joined within 15 minutes of Jay16 being banned and made his first post in defense of him in the same style.

he should be more subtle if he doesn't want a quick ban

signs up right after the ban, goes right to arguing that he shouldn’t have been banned. He even took a name that fits his self-envisioned role.

I feel like I need to say something, well two things:

1. Antichrist Superstar is a kickass album.
2. Thank the heavens (or BBS) jay16 was banned.

To treat the issue somewhat seriously for a moment...

We could offer Saturday $8.5m next season and still have room under the cap, and that’s way, way more than he’d get on the open market. I’m not sure what an elite C is worth in the NFL, but nowhere near that much. And that’s assuming the cap doesn’t increase at all, which it usually does.

We don’t need to cut Harrison to free up a little cap space to resign people. Although I also think we should restructure Harrison’s deal, he’s not worth #1WR money any more.

Then again, look at what Ashley Lelie’s earning in Oakland…

Actually, scratch that...

I had another look at the numbers and realised we’re actually 3.5m over the cap next season at the moment, before resigning anyone.

We’d only save $6m by cutting Harrison next year though, which wouldn’t get us enough under the cap to give Saturday a market rate deal. So we’d need to cut others regardless.

Dallas Clark gets a $10m payrise next season!
