Strength of Schedule through Week 14

I promised I'd keep doing the Strength of Schedule, even after the Colts play the lowly Bengals and Lions.  I've gone all fancy on you, and the table is after the jump.  Here's some notes on the table:

  • The first set of columns is the straight up Opponents' Winning Percentage.  The Colts are still over .500, but probably will fall under it after this week.  They are 14th toughest in this.
  • The second set of columns is Opponents' Winning Percentage with games played against that team taken out.  For example, the Colts are 9-4, so I took away 9 losses, and 4 wins to get this percentage.  The Colts are 10th toughest this way.
  • The third set of columns is the Opponents Opponents' Winning Percentage.  You can't really take anything from these numbers by themselves, but they will be used in the overall Strength of Schedule.
  • The Last Column is the Strength of Schedule, which is 2/3 Opponents' Winning Percentage, and 1/3 Opponents Opponents' Winning Percentage.  This is what the NCAA used to use for football, and uses now for basketball, so I think it's a decent way of doing it, rather than just straight up Opponents' Winning Percentage.  The Colts are 13th toughest
  • Each of the columns are sortable, so you can see anything you want, and draw your own conclusions.

My observations?  The Colts have played a league average schedule, nothing more, nothing less.  Even though it will drop the next two weeks, it will get a nice boost in Week 17.  I bet we'll finish around 12th or 13th.

We also see why the AFC East has 3 teams tied at 8-5, as all 4 teams are in the bottom 7 in SoS.  And they all still have crappy teams to play.

Where

do you get these kind of stats from?

Excel

The First column can easily be calculated by copying/pasting a schedule and each teams record.

Then the second you get from the first and each teams record.

The third you get from schedule and first column.

SoS is (First column * 2 + Third Column) / 3. Anyone can do it.

Why a four-year-old child could understand this

(Run out and find me a four-year old-child. I can’t make head or tail of it.)

Philly are the only team in the top ten SoS to be in the playoff hunt, yeah? Impressive. Clearly they need to fire the coach and cut McNabb…
