Can someone explain some stuff to me? Thanks!
So now that I've cooled off from the game, I have a few questions regarding... some decisions today.
1) I like Chad Simpson as much as the next guy, I really do. And the fumble doesn't really appear to be his fault, just fluky the way the foot came up and hit it. But why do you have a rookie in there in crunch time instead of Dom? The Vikings were burning time outs after every run and there was the 2 minute warning, so he obviously didn't need a blow.
2) Why was Josh Thomas in at DT instead of Brock or Muir? Hey, Thomas is good against the run, as a DE. Look, I realize I often come off as a boob that knows too much, is rude, and is gonna take your lunch money and spit in your gfs hair. But why, for the life of me, when you're playing an 0-13 whom you know is going to want to run. run. run. run. and run. to eat up clock and shorten the game, do you not have your actually DTs in the game? Muir has gotten a push almost every time he's been in the game, which is like 3 plays.
3) What was with the weird ass play calling? Dom was slicing and dicing them in stretches, the Colts would get to 2nd and 3 and play calling would go pass (from shot gun), pass (from shot gun), punt. Even if the Lions were selling out on the run, go under center and play fake deep a few times, guys..
4) This isn't a question. Manning is still hurt. Maybe not physically, but mentally, definitely. Watch him when he throws the ball. He throws and before he can follow through, he's turning his body away to shield his right knee from contact. Its bizarre, he's never done it before, and its gotta be related to everything that happened earlier in the year.
5) I love lamp. KURT WARNER AND DREW BREES FOR MVP.

I agree on #2
I’m not a Josh Thomas fan
#1, Dom has had fumble problems in his career. He fumbled twice in 75 carries last year and 3 times in 180ish the year before. This year is the first year he’s had more than 40 carries without a fumble
- The pass was working a lot better than the run. They gained 8.3 per pass and 3.7 per run.

Re: Dom
Yea, but this year (and in ‘06 playoffs) he was really the closer. I don’t understand why they take the ball out of his hands at the end of the game. He was running straight and hard. And I was saying this BEFORE the Simpson fumble. They’ve been subbing Rhodes in for Addai at the end of games this year, and I don’t view Simpson (maybe incorrectly on my part?) as a power back.
Oh and
They may have averaged 3.7 per run, but Dom was at like 4. something, right? And some of the drop off is from 3 1 yard touchdown runs…
without the 2 TDs Dom had 4.67 YPC
effective, but they were shreding them with the pass. 8.3 YPP and 76% completion

Don't you think
Don’t go FO on me for this one, cuz i know about Detroit being the worst team in the league against the shotgun…
But after the Colts got to 2nd and short, don’t think you that going under center, even if you want to pass, would atleast have prevented the D from teeing off on the pass as much? I dunno, the pass is always there, I don’t mind wasting some second downs just to make people think we can run.
I think the late sub has been to get fresh legs in to finish
Addai has awesome ball security, but they still like to go with Dom late.

What could you possibly not understand about the Hood Thong?
It’s the must have gift this holiday season!
The Shogun of Harlem
That answers everything!
Thomas was at DT because they need fresh bodies for the rotation. He and Brock were filling in at Dawson’s spot and the bigger guys at Foster’s. I have no problem with them keeping fresh bodies in there and trust the coaches to know who’s practicing and playing better. Most of the problems with run D had to do with missed assignments and missed tackles. It was weird seeing Thomas inside, but I didn’t consider it a problem.
No idea on Simpson vs Rhodes but yes, it would seem to make sense to have the better player in there. Disagree about Manning being hurt. As for the play calling, they go with what they think will work based on the D they see, plus you have to sometimes call the opposite of what’s expected just to keep them guessing.
It doesn't clear up any of my questions,
but i am aroused…
Heres the explanation from Dungy (found at Colt.com) about using Simpson towards the end
"They both did a good job," Dungy said. "We wanted Chad to be in there. Joseph is nicked up. We think he’ll be OK for Thursday night. We may need Chad down the stretch and we’ve been trying to get him in some situations where it was meaningful.
"Gene had him in there at the end of the game and I thought that was good."

I don't know if Manning is still hurt or not
I had wondered seriously until this week, because he has had such inability to hit people down the field. Especially over the shoulder throws. But that throw to Wayne was beautiful, and you’re not making that throw, without a good follow through. Leads me to believe if there is any injury it’s in his head. Doesn’t surprise me, we’re not talking about a guy that has suffered a lot of injuries, and just played through them to get this streak of games played he has. He has been lucky and I think this has opened his mind to the possibilities of an injury. Especially in a game where he’s being beat on like today. I have a big problem with that, the O-line needs to do there job, and that’s protecting Manning, they already suck at run blocking, they need to stand up for him at least. That b.s. where they let the Lions defender hit sack Manning, and then put his hand in the middle of his chest to push himself up. Manning is there meal ticket and they need to realize that.
I doubt it
I don’t think Manning’s hurt at all, but I agree to a certain extent it’s mental. The thing I fear come playoff time is what they’ve been doing this year. Everyone says that the run game isn’t doing that great blah blah. But that’s because they’re not really giving it a chance. I mean, look at the times where Manning just starts throwing throwing throwing. We’re normally not ever in that big of a hole where that needs to happen. It’s like he’s reverting back to how we were before we said “okay Peyton, we’re going to RUN the ball now and we’re going to run it alot”. That’s how it was before 2006. We’d have these great offenses and then we’d get up big and Edge would start running the clock out. But when we’d get into the playoffs we wouldn’t pull ahead of teams so we’d abandon the running game and Manning would do exactly what he’s doing now. Pass pass pass pass run repeat. The thing is, that works great and all, but when we’re running our regular offense it’s a hurry up. So our D gets them to give it up after being out there for a little bit and then Manning goes and tries the quick strike because he doesn’t trust the run or the line and the Defense gets a drink of gatorade and has to go right back out.
Alot of teams only average 3.5-4.5 until they tire the defense down and then start getting bigger chunks. I can only assume that Addai has been hurt way more than was originally let on and Dungy or someone is telling Manning he has to pass. Nobody expects our run because we don’t do it so nobody respects our playaction.
Same situation’s happening with the Jets if you look at it. I know because I have T. Jones on my fantasy team and looked through all their games. But the thing that’s worse about them is that they know they do better when they run but they won’t.
All I can say is that it’s working now, but Addai better be healthy during the playoffs.

They didn’t run the ball all that well in the regular season (Philly game excepted) and then apparently flipped the physical switch in the playoffs. Now, I dont think that can happen again, because I don’t think our line is as physical without Scott and Lilja. I wish the Colts could find a way to put Richard in as guard… I don’t know how they could do it, since I don’t think they’ll bench Pollak (even though they probably should) and Charlie Johnson is actually passible.. but they need an edge, and other than Saturday, they don’t really have it.
I hate to harp on it 2 years later, but God, they miss Tarik.

I competely agree with losing Tarik. I put something in the draft discussion about it. Best player on our line. And since he announced retirement in July we really couldn’t even replace him and left ourselves scrambling. Wasn’t as noticeable then but I knew once we got a few injuries (just look right now) it’d come back to bite us. At least we have the pieces in place to recover.

Re: Peyton.
Please clarify. Is he protecting his right knee or his left (I haven’t been able to see many games here). The reason I ask is because the surgeries were on his left knee, weren’t they?

well..
Yesterday, on the few occassions he HAD a pocket to throw and wasn’t hit late (seriously, how were there not 15 flags for late hits yesterday?) he would throw and before he could even follow through with his front (left leg) he would immediately turn his body around so that his ass was facing the defense.
