Better Know the Jacksonville Jaguars: Question Time with Big Cat Country
Here we are again, the lastest go-around with the Surging Colts and the Stumbling Jaguars. It seems almost silly for me to post a question time, our teams know each other about as well as one can.
The Jaguars, quite frankly, have very little to play for. Sweeping the Colts is about the only thing left to put a bright spot on an awful season. So I wouldn't expect a lazy and unmotivated Jaguars team, not by a long shot.
I will offer you this nugget. I completely agree with Big Blue Shoe, Peyton Manning is the League MVP.
Questions?

Is Del Rio gone?
Conventional “wisdom” in the national media seems to agree that the team has given up on him. But the Packer game must have been a nice rallying point. Who coaches the Jags next year?

Jack Del Rio
While the Peterson thing looked bad in the eyes of the media, internal consensus is that it worked. Shuffling the lockers around quelled some things.
Frankly, we’ll know more as we see the effort in the next three weeks. You’re right though, Green Bay was a nice sign that things can return to normal.
Financially speaking, Wayne Weaver would be on the hook for a lot of money. Were Jack to go and be a DC somewhere, he’d be making huge bank. The investment is too high to cut him out.
I expect some changes in the organization though, James Harris will go away and whomever replaces him as GM will have total control, not join the trifecta of personnel selections that currently exists.

I don’t have a question, so someone else can go now. :)

Question:
Just wondering your thoughts on David Garrard’s performance this year? 3, 164 YDS 13 TDS, 10 INTS, 62.5% for a passer rating of 82.6 is hardly the performance you would have been expecting when you signed him to a 6-year $60 million extension. Obviously, like the Colts, your O-line has been ravaged by injuries, so how much do you attribute this to his disappointing play so far this year?

The amount of time Garrard got to throw against GB probably equalled the amount he's had the rest of the season
The passing yardage is easily a career best so that’s a positive. But yeah, the O-line injuries have simply killed this team. We have no running game, so the opposing defenses have had the luxury to either blitz every down or keep 8 back and not fear any real consequence. Also helped our big offseason acquisitions, Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson, still haven’t shown up. Though I will say this, in every win this season, there has been a point where Garrard has single handidly taken the team on his shoulders and gotten us the win.

Wow, that’s a lot of money for a guy who hasn’t thrown the ball much.

What About DC Greg Williams?
Seems like I heard (or read) that he won’t be back. What are your thoughts on that?

He was never a long term hire.
He signed a one year deal. Williams was not paid this year by the Jaguars, he’s still getting paid from his contract from Washington. He’ll be a free-agent coach and will more than likely leave the Jaguars.
Frankly, his scheme does not fit well in Jacksonville. We’re a cover 2 team with DB’s that work in that system, when Williams put them in press and man to man coverage, the pass defense failed. When Del Rio put the team back into it’s more comfortable role, the secondary improved.
Williams is also really, really, really good at blitzing at the most obvious time. The Jaguars would have beaten the Titans early in the season had Williams not blitzed everyone against a team that knows how Gregg thinks.

Question
How many draft picks do the Jags have? Do they have a first rounder?

5 I know for sure
We traded a 6th rounder for Troy Williamson and a 7th rounder as part of the trade with Tampa to get Quentin Groves in the 2nd round. Yes we have a first rounder, we just swapped 1st rounders with Baltimore, we didn’t add in a 2nd.

What position
is your greatest need with your first round pick? Are you looking for a MLB, possibly Spikes, Laurainitis, or Maualuga? Do you try the WR route one more time (Heyward-Bey or Harvin)? Or do you get an offensive lineman, such as Duke Robinson, who will instantly put your run game back on top?

Lineback we're set. If Justin Durant or Daryl Smith played for a team ESPN covered I think both would be heading to Hawaii
WR, most likely not considering we’ll most likely have a top 10 pick. LT or DT seems to be the consensus choice right now. I think an ideal scenario right now is one of the Big 3 left tackles, most likely Eugene Monroe of Virginia fall to us in the first round, then have either Jeremy Maclin or Percy Harvin fall into the 2nd. Bit of a fool’s dream sure, but I’m already seeing Harvin fall out of the 1st because of durability issues.
