What About Marv?

So, I know we've been debating 88 all season. I don't think he's lost a step, but him and Peyton just haven't clicked like they used to. Well, yesterday Peyton was a machine. The ESPN AFC South Blog even has an interesting breakdown of how Peyton loved throwing to his right side....Marv's normal side.

I can't decide what was more impressive: Peyton's performance or the fact that he did it with WRs lined up at unusual spots. Going into the game, I assumed Gonzo would play in Marv's spot like he did last year. Instead, they had Reggie move.  If our offense could do more than 1.8 yards a  carrey, we would really have something.

Would you all feel more comfortable if they started Gonzo over Marv in the playoffs? Also, did this game make it a lot more tempting for Polian to give Marv his walking papers after the season?

They are better off with Marv on the roster

but the offense worked about as well as it has with Marv all year. Gonzo had Marv numbers. I don’t think there would be a big drop off between having Marv and having Gonzo in the 2 TE set, but the two minute offense is better off with Marv over Honey Gijon Robinson.

I think we're starting to see

That the receivers aren’t the problem. Its the offensive line and the running game. We’re only getting explosive plays on plays where a defensive player just has a freakin brain fart. With defenses able to play 2/3 deep man-under and stop the run with the front 4 for the most part, it becomes way too hard to be anything but a ball control/west coast passing game. Gonzo proved last year, imo, that he can fill in for Marvin, and he’s, what, 15 years younger? He WILL get better. I hope Marvin will take a pay cut, but I don’t think he will. The Colts need his cap hit money to fix the O-line. Phil B seemed to hint that he thought Lilja’s career could be in serious jeopardy. The guards we have on the roster right now don’t seem to be good for this offense. Hopefully they will grow into the position, but the run game is killing this team.

Even though the defense comes up big at times

overall, I think they’re still a real problem. I’d much rather see three great quarters of defensive play and one bad quarter…..than the other way around. But, because of the greatness of Peyton Manning, it’s just enough to win…..and of course, nearly put the fans in the hospital from stress. Imagine if the defense could make some reasonable stops throughout the games? The Colts would be winning by 20 again.

The Lines have to be the priority in the offseason

Letting Jake Scott go is looking like the one big FA departure that has finally bitten us. The Jury is out on most of the new Guards/Centers(I like Richards but Pollack needs some serious work still). Diem seems to be on the quick decline and Ugoh doesn’t instill much confidence in me.

We still need anothe starter at DT though we do appear to have some depth now if we could get one decent starter in place there.

Looking ahead to the draft I’d say consider the best DT and OT’s on the board. Take the position which has the best player available from those two. If you could get a legit starting LT maybe Ugoh could move to RT and be solid. If the OT’s aren’t worth a late #1 then take the best DT (that fits our style and system). If neither position offers a first round talent then trade down (or take a WR if Marvin indicates that he won’t restructure. No one wants to lose him but he can’t justify his salary for what he’s brining to the table at this point).

A couple things

One thing that struck me during the game was that the receivers were catching everything thrown at them. I believe Clark was the only one that dropped a pass (and I completely forgive him for that), but the entire game the receivers were really on.

As for the running game, the O-line is the problem there. Numerous times I saw one of the interior line men (not sure who) be pushed straight back 5 yards right at the snap of the ball. Once I even saw that same guy get pushed backwards and then another lineman watched him go past him and look completely lost. So there needs to be work done there.

Marvin Is Gone

Last night cost Marvin any chance of being back without a major contract reconstruction. We don’t need him, frankly. We will draft someone like Percy Harvin to replace him and save money.

Percy Harvin

Won’t be on the board at #32

You never know

He’ll be a late first rounder. If not him than I would take Louis Murphy or Jeremy Maclin.

Bolden

I’m not sure if this is even plausible, but what do you guys think about going after Anquan Bolden? I know we don’t really make big name moves, and I’m not sure what kind of money he’s looking for, but that’d be a hell of an addition. I’d be alright paying Bolden 13 mil a year.

i wanted to do this

but you’d have to trade for him, he’s still under contract. But now he’s been injured a lot lately, and it looks like the Colts are going to have some serious needs, and I don’t think you can give up a #1 for Boldin when you still have Reggie Wayne and Gonzo. But yeah, he’d be a really great physical presence.

by Nideak on Dec 19, 2008 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

I see

Didn’t realize he was under contract, he’s a beast though, he’s plays better hurt than most #1 wide-outs when they are perfectly healthy.

by burc on Dec 19, 2008 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

That was one of the reasons I wanted him..

He’s unhappy in arizona, wants a new contract, but will honor his contract, has like 2 years left at 2.5M each. CHEAP and he’s a man.

by Nideak on Dec 19, 2008 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

He would be totally steamed if you traded for him and then didn’t give him a new contract, though, so we’d have to give up plenty to Arizona, then give him a fat new deal, then find him enough balls to make him worth his money – whilst hoping Reggie Wayne didn’t get pissed that we’d signed in a new guy and giving him a much bigger deal.

I think Boldin’s great, but I don’t really think he’s fixing what’s wrong with this team right now.

yep, def need to address the lines more than WR

by Nideak on Dec 20, 2008 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

He's unhappy in Arizona

because of his current deal … Fitzgerald got a huge contract and he just wanted a similar deal or to be traded where he could get big $$ as a number one WR … in terms of NFL contracts he deserves a big pay day because of his play, so expect him to chase the money … and that’s not gonna be in Indy

Yep,

but, he’s proven that he WILL play out his contract, and he doesn’t have the power to veto a trade. I’m not saying it would or should happen, but the fact that he’s unhappy about his contract hasn’t stopped him from playing thus far, and I doubt it would if he were traded to anyone (other than the Raiders).
