Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Players suspended: Charles Grant, Deuce McAllister, Bryan Pittman, Will Smith, Kevin Williams, and Pat Williams. This basically means the Vikings and Saints are done. The players plan to file a motion for appeal, but they really don't have a leg to stand on. The NFL is very specific about banned substances. These guys went outside the rules, got caught, and now they will sit for 4 games. Rules are rules for a reason. Obviously, the folks at Daily Norseman and Canal Street Chronicles are pissed, but I personally think anger toward Goodell or the league is misguided. These guys broke the rules and got caught, regardless of intent.

beat me to it

how hard is it for players to stick to the list of NFL approved supplements?

it sucks for them that they were probably not trying to take banned substances

but will still get suspended, but that’s the risk they take when they go off the list the NFL provides.

or maybe not, from the NFL's release
two notifications specifically mentioning Star Caps were sent on December 19, 2006. One was sent to the presidents, general managers, and head athletic trainers of all NFL clubs. The second was sent to Stacy Robinson, the NFLPA executive who oversees the Steroid Policy on behalf of the union. The letter to Robinson states that “Balanced Health Products, which distributes Star Caps, has been added to the list of prohibited dietary supplement companies. Please distribute this information to the agents and players through your normal channels.” In response, Robinson had Balanced Health Products added to the list of banned companies that is maintained on the NFLPA’s website.

Except

Atlanta’s alleged guy, I can’t remember his name was not suspended, because it’s supposedly for his heart??? Yet this didn’t come after till he failed his test. The NFL should of known he was already on this drug, and not even failed him on the test.

maybe it's because Grady Jackson is about one more cheeseburger from dropping dead

you know how big the league is on player safety.

Are these two really in the same picture or just spliced together?

Is that Reggie Bush? His head looks like the size of a baseball compared to Grady’s.

there's some perspective in the difference too

The camera is on one side of Grady Jackson and Bush is all the way on the other.

I thought I read/heard somewhere...

that there is a hotline that players can call to see what is legal and what isn’t legal and the stuff that (most of) these players were not on that list.

Rules are rules

However, I seems a bit odd to me, that a drug like this weight loss drug, or whatever it was, that is pretty harmless qualifies for the same suspension as Steroids, EPO or whatever that REALLY gives the players a boost.

The NFL needs to toughen up on their anti-doping policy. It’s laughable, that so little is done to prevent it, and then how mild the penalties are.

by jocre on Dec 3, 2008 4:01 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The thing is

That diuretics, if this is one, can and are used to cover up evidence of steroid abuse by getting the telltale chemicals out of your system faster. So the NFL has to treat them the say, otherwise prospective drug cheats would just dope up on steroids or whatever, then flush their system, knowing that the risk of severe punishment was far lower.

But I agree, in general the NFL’s drug policies are moronically leniant. But having similar penalties for diuretics and actual performance enhancing drugs are pretty much standard practice in worldwide sport.

My bad

after I read up on the Diuretics, it seems as if they the diuretics abusers needs to be punished in the same manner as anabolic steroids users.

glad they have tough rules

I am glad for one the NFL has the rules it does… Baseball never did and look a the problems they had.

Why do players think they need these supplements… Most of them really don’t do very much except cost money and possibly get you in trouble. The risk isn’t worth the hassle. And some of these things are DAMN dangerous

The NFL had its steroids era too. It just wasn’t as recent or viewed in the same light as baseball.

Tough?!

Are you serious? The NFLs anti-doping policy is about as tough as slush-ice. I don’t know what standards you compare the anti-doping policy to, but pretty much every european-dominated sport has a way tougher anti-doping policy.

As KR says, the NFL had it’s doping era, look at all the former athletes who are now coming out of their hides… I think it was Jim Haslett who told that pretty much the entire Steelers dynasty was doped up during their golden days. And now consider how much bigger, faster and stronger the players are. I assume that has something to do with doping, I mean the training can’t have done it all. If anyone doesn’t believe that doping is a rather large problem in the NFL I find them a bit Naïve. However that is my opinion on pretty much every sport that is out there.

EXACTLY!!

Take professional cycling for instance…these guys have a biological passport…they can be tested at any time out of competition…they are tested in competition….if they get caught there is a 2 year suspension…yep 2 years!!! Not a pittely 4 games….The NFL has done a great job of marketing themselves…doping is a problem in the NFL…cycling is not as good at marketing because look at the negative press they always get following a doping case…hell, in the NFL it wasn’t that long ago that a guy could get caught taking steroids and still be nominated as a defensive player of the year…also, there seems to be no stigma attached to being caught…Merriman ring a bell? Hell, he is a cheat nothing more, nothing less!! But his transgression is all but forgotten!! The situation is utter BS!!!

by TRDean on Dec 3, 2008 9:24 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yes but...

cycling is an individual event.. An athlete makes money on his performance alone. Totally different from a team sport. AND it also depends on the threshold you set. NFL players lose money and games for even trace amounts they may have ingested accidentally. And cycling has only started this more recently after it became clear how doped up all the cyclists were.. Why do you think Lance Armstrong retired? Think he would have passed some of their newer tests?

Yes the NFL had problems in the past, but they have tried to account for it. Unlike baseball (which is a reasonable comparison as a team sport … unlike cycling) who had to be dragged before congress and still has a toothless policy. Compared to other profession TEAM sports football does have strict standards.

As an uninformed American...

you obviously do not know the sport of cycling. Amateur cycling is indeed more individual..however, professional cycling is not (I repeat, is not) an individual sport!! You can not win races with any consistency as an individual…the team is what wins the races. Actually, Lance Armstrong passed many many drug tests…he has been tested as much as any athlete in his time, so I am not sure that holds any water…That being said, I don’t think that because he has never tested positive that he never doped. Also, Lance is being tested as we write this, as his comeback stipulates that a rider returning from retirment must begin drug testing 6 months prior to athletic participation. Doping testing has been going on in cycling since the mid 90s. It did not just start, and I would bet that just as large a percentage of NFL players dope as in pro cycling. Say what you want, but a 2 year ban in cycling is a huge penalty, that most likely will be increased to 4 years or life bans in the next couple of years.
Oh yea, doesn’t an NFL player make money on his performance alone? Hell, there is talk of Drew Breeze being the MVP this season…his team is last in their division and they have a loosing record!! Is he not being judged on his performance? If he was to sign a contract with a new team next year will they look at the record of his team? NO they will look at his individual performance.

Also, what the heck does a team or individual sport have to do with it. Is bluegirl stating that worse penalties should be doled out to individuals rather than teamates? I totally disagree here. Doping is Doping…it is cheating any way you cut it. The NFL is not so lilly white…I think Jocre said it best above!! How the heck have these guys gotten so big in such a short period of time? It certainly is not evolution! I get so tired watching college football and a freshman comes in at 225 lbs and by the time he graduates he is a stud DE playing at 275 lbs of solid muscle. I don’t believe that a college diet and weight program alone can do that.

I am not trying to attack anyone here, but I have very firm beliefs and feelings about doping and cheating. I don’t care what sport you participate in!!

I wouldn't say uninformed

Bluegirl, is usually pretty well-informed. However, I’m with TRDean on this one. Cycling is the ultimate teamsport, however, only one rider will usually take credit. Armstrong wouldn’t have won seven in a row without a great supporting cast. And I’m also confident he was doped, but he was never caught, and his old blood and urine samples have also been checked out with newer methods, and still nothing is found. Not even tiny traces of doping, because if there found ANYTHING at all, they are banned for 2 years. Heck, during last years tour de france the leading rider at the moment, Michael Rasmussen, was banned by his team, for questions regarding his whereabouts for like two weeks.

NFL is very much based on individual performances. What about all the bonuses these players can earn?

I think it is kind of toothless, do drugs, and you will face either a 1 or 4-game supspension, I don’t even want to know how long other “major sports” ban the athletes. In soccer you’ll likely face a 2-year ban, if you’re caught taking illegal drugs.

My bad!!

Bluegirl…I don’t mean any offense, but I most likely gave it!! I just get so frustrated because of my strong stance against cheating of any kind and doping in particular. I tend to think that a sport like cycling is doing wonderful things to fight doping, but they constantly get bad press, while the NFL seems to always skate off scott free.

Anyway, I apologize for my insane bahavior.

It’s funny though, the Vikings were riding high up until yesterday. The were in first place of their division, have a winning record, everything was going great. Now their two best interior defensive lineman are out for the season. It will be interesting to see if they can play as good and hold onto the division lead and make it into the playoffs now.

but even if they make the playoffs

Think they have time to account for the loss of two starters like that ? How many games has it take our D to recover from the loses at DT? I’d say the first 7 or 8 until Johnson was brought in, and it is really only the last two games we really see the run stopping improve..
