T.J. a Colt?

I was reading through our favourite sport writer's (Peter King) column MMQB - Tuesday edition and this jumped out at me:

FROM YOUR LIPS TO BILL POLIAN'S EARS. From Steve Clark, of Fort Wayne: "With the likely departure of Marvin Harrison, do you think the Colts, at Peyton Manning's behest, will pursue T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the offseason, whom Manning purportedly had great chemistry with at the Pro Bowl?''

Steve, that would be one of the great signings in the history of free-agency ... as long as the Colts can figure out a way to make it work cap-wise. Manning would love the hands and dedication of Houshmandzadeh, and if I'm T.J., I'd WALK to Indianapolis to make it happen.

I'd personally love to see T.J. in a Colts uniform however I don't know how realistic our chances are of signing him. Obviously Harrison would need to depart for this to even be a possibility, and resigning Saturday and Hayden would be our top priorities. If we do get both Jeff and Kelvin resigned I would imagine our cap space would be pretty tight but I'm not sure of the exact numbers, anyone got any idea? Provided there is space, another factor would be the amount of money that T.J. is asking for and whether or not the Colts believe he is worth it or not. Another possiblity is the Colts let Hayden or (god forbid) Saturday walk with the hope of signing T.J.

Housh

Housh is a year older than Wayne. He’s realistically got 3-5 years left. He’ll be looking for one last big payday. From a football standpoint, he’s significantly more likely to win a ring playing in Indianapolis than he will almost anywhere else. From a financial standpoint, just about anywhere else would pay him more than we would.

So, the question is which does TJ Houshmandzadeh want more? A ring, or a fat check?

I’m betting he ends up on the Redskins or Eagles. Both need receiver help, both have some cash, and both are willing to part with it.

It’s likely that we’re going to make major efforts to resign Saturday, Hayden, and Jackson this offseason. Marvin will either take a pay cut or retire. I can’t seem him being traded or cut. Not Marvin.

Also, interesting fact. Biggest guy on the Colts roster: Ryan Diem.

I hope they figure it out

That would be most excellent.

Keep dreaming

with the depth we have at wide receiver, unless TJ desperately wants a ring I can’t see it happening. Polian just doesn’t sign the big free agents.

Depth? What depth? All the Colts really have is Gonzo, who, according to he and everyone else on the Colts team, is playing out of position in the slot. If the Colts could grab TJ, he’d be the best slot receiver the Colts have ever had.

I don’t consider Hall and Garcon “depth” because they are unproven draft projects, unlike Housh.

big on Hall

obviously the team is big on Roy Hall and with the TE’s we have it seems really unlikely they would think we would need another big money WR

not tryin to pick..

but how can you be big on hall? (Unless you are literally, ya know, on hall) He’s played what, 2 games this year and 4 games last year and all on special teams? I think he’s number 5 on the depth chart right now.. I’m a buckeye fan, but I don’t have much hope for hall. The only thing that’s given me hope about the WRs is that Gonzo and Reggie both seem good at playing wide and in the slot, so the colts will be able to move pieces around more next year (assuming its a different starting 2/3 from this year, ie no marv)

I think that he meant

That the coaching staff is big on Hall. Wayne had some not so spectacular years in the beginning, and he had two things working for him: 1) He is the prototypical Colts WR, and 2) He came into a much less talented WR corps. He also never sustained a serious injury, or was never on a team that suffered so many injuries to so many key players at other positions. But eventually he learned the system, rose to the top, and his skills were allowed to flourish.

For Hall, he is much bigger than your typical Colts WR. And Bill Polian is NOT a fan of big receivers. This isn’t Matt Millen here. He sees a guy with real raw physical potential with the characters, smarts, and competitiveness to go out and clean up his routes and learn the offense. Also, he’s a tweener. We have another tweener, Dallas Clark, who is a proven producer. But Clark also has skills playing tight with the line, which as a WR, I don’t think Hall has ever had to develop. This is not a coaching staff to hang on to guys like this, that are SO out of the norm for their personnel preferences, just because they spent a late round pick on him. If we see Hall tomorrow, and I’m not saying we will, but if we do, I would expect a solid game of production for him. Especially considering that Sorgi will be the one slinging the ball around.

If they could find a way to give him a 3 year contract

I’d say hell yeah.

I doubt they can get it under the cap

Next year if they resigned no one and cut no one, just filling the 17 roster spots with minimum salary guys they would be at the cap. Unless the cap takes a giant leap this year they won’t be able to afford to do anything but resign some of their guys and sign their draft picks.

I would like Housh in Indy

But only for a contract that doesnt have a big cap hit.

i was able

to sign him in madden. but then again i backloaded the deal so that it wouldnt be much of a cap hit, and i dont expect to really be playing much more than 3 seasons. but he was absolutely sick for me after i signed him. if thats any indicator.

Anyone else

With me when I say restructure Marv’s contract(or ask him to retire), cut Diem, and draft a first round OT? The play of the latter is one of the weakest spots on the line, and that cap hit is unforgivable. Resign Saturday, Hayden, and get some long term deals going for the young defensive guys(Maybe Mookie, Session, etc.) Or start early on next year’s keepers. The moves above save about $12.5M, I think that should get ’er done.

It's whether Marv will take a pay cut

he’s been a elite WR for a long time and is still (mostly) there physically. Whether it’s restructure, cut, or retirement the Colts are still on the hook for his remaining bonus money (somewhere between 3 and 15 million, very likely the high end).

Agree on Diem, I would even be willing to have a later round guy competing with Charlie Johnson for the RT spot if it means keeping Saturday and Hayden.

Im with you

I think Diem and Marvin have to go (or restruture the contract, Marv) and Saturday and Hayden stay, but if those two stay, there’s no way the Colts are bringing in a FA. I don’t know that with Diem and Harrison gone they could afford Saturday and Hayden anyhow, but I KNOW they won’t be able to afford a FA, unless Whosyourmomma just wants to play with Peyton so bad he’s wetting himself.

On Madden

I traded Marvin Harrison for Devin Hester. I love doing the impossible on Madden.

If we can take out some of the cap hit from Harrison and Diem, that would be fantastic. I would think it would be enough to resign Hayden and Saturday and have enough for some draft picks.
