Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Brackett is "a week away" according to Dungy. However, it seems like Bob Sanders, Joseph Addai, Dominic Rhodes, and Anthony Gonzalez are all good to go.

Damn it

That’s huge. We better not start Buster freakin’ Davis. He’s awful. Move Keiaho to Mike and start Hagler at Will.

that is not good news

hopefully he can recover in time for saturday. LT looked like his old self last night, so the colts D will need to be on their A game. Gap control and getting depth on zone drops will be paramount.

I wonder if the chargers will come out passing on saturday like they did last night.

This is big, but I’m more concerned about it from a passing game standpoint. The Chargers, more than any other play off team, love to through that seam route that would split the safeties in the tampa 2, meaning the deep middle drop from the MIKE is gonna be important. If its Buster Davis out there, they’ll just throw 40 yard bombs to vincent jackson on every play, until Davis is below 300 lbs from all the runnin around he’ll be doin.

ugh

Exactly right. Without Brackett I don’t know how this D can match up and get off the field. This is bad news.

by willyduer on Dec 29, 2008 5:57 PM EST up reply actions

oops

I, of course, meant throw instead of through. Proof reading is overrated.

by Nideak on Dec 29, 2008 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Didn’t notice that. But I suspect you meant 200 instead of 300 :P

I can’t believe that they’re playing a team they beat, have a 4 game edge on, that had the 2nd weakest schedule in the league, and I’m thoroughly scared and convinced they’ll lose. What a terrible matchup. Why can’t they play in Miami instead?

Ugh. TD just said “it’s something about that 3-4 defense” in response to “why does Manning struggle against the Chargers” on NFLN. Come on, the NFL network is supposed to have the smart ones.

Depressing

Even if they pull Buster, Keiaho isn’t good enough in coverage to make me feel comfortable with him at MLB. He struggles with good TEs as a OLB. Where is my Antonio Gates Voodoo doll?

On the bright side

The coaching staff, along with Keiaho and Hagler, have had ample time to prepare for this. I think the defense will play fine as long as consistent pressure is brought on Rivers and Buster Davis doesn’t play.

Pressure on Rivers.

I hope Freeney and Mathis have a stellar day (night)! Over at the Bolts’ sight, they are quoting Jaws as saying the Rivers should be the MVP – or at least in the discussion.

Personally, I want to see that punk go down….and not to the 4th floor for a massage. ;)

it also hurts in that

Senn instead of Hagler is the first sub off the bench. An especially big deal because that’s where I (and I expect everyone else) would draw the line between starting caliber and special teamer in the LB corps.

but

the Good news is, with Bobzilla back, we can just use bob as the 3rd linebacker and play Bullitt and Bethea as Safeties. There are enough bodies to make this defense work, it just comes down to Keiaho or Hagler (whomever they put in at MIKE) playing a smart, disciplined game.

Fuck

It is going to be real hard to cover Antonio Gates without him. Since we run a Cover 2, the middle of the field concerns me

by metal_militia on Dec 29, 2008 6:11 PM EST reply actions

So is it time to panic?

Last time we didn’t have Bob in San Diego, but we still won. I know Bob gives the D life, but Brackett is really the heart and soul of the D. Man I hope his status changes. Do think the Colts are saying there’s a possibly Brackett won’t play just to make the Chargers have to two different game plans?

by KMR24 on Dec 29, 2008 6:30 PM EST reply actions

No

Brackett is an awesome, intelligent LB who always seems to be where he should be for the big plays. But to tell you the truth L.T. might not even go and even if he does a strained groin is nothing to shrug off for anyone especially a RB. And I don’t know about you guys, but even with Brackett out I’d take the 6th rated passing defense (also broke the passing TDs given up by 3 for the season) against the 31st ranked passing defense. Their only way to completely handle the game will be to run the ball. And I went over this in another thread but since signing Antonio Johnson we’ve actually been pretty solid. The only reason our numbers are down were from the beginning of the year and not being prepared for Ed Johnson to get caught with pot. Foster became the starting DT when he was released and he’s finally going to be healthy too. Our D is going to be the healthiest it’s been all season. And I love Brackett, but I don’t think we absolutely need him to beat SD. They’ll have to pull us out of the Tampa 2 to be threatening and I don’t think a banged up L.T. is going to be able to do that. I mean really, put it into perspective, we’re 12-4 and the 11th best defense in the league. After multiple injuries and an offense that couldn’t move the ball and would go 3 and out. Freeney and Mathis have played leaps and bounds better since the offense started to click. I don’t think the Chargers defense can stop us. If they decide to pass to us they play right into the strength of our defense. Rivers is a TERRIBLE scrambler, I’m not talking Peyton Manning just plain slow, his ball control is awkward. If he tries to do that against us he’s going to get his feelings hurt. And straight up I’d take Clark over Gates even if I had the choice. And Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers might scare the crappy teams the Chargers have faced but we’re not the AFC West. It’ll be close but I still think our D stands a much better chance at stopping or at least containing their offense than their defense stopping our offense.

Like I said, the Colts are 12-4. At some point in time if you’re beating a team then they have to try to win the game by passing. They’re not going to run the ball at the end of the game, and most of our games have been close. We’ve given up 6 TDs through the air the entire year. That means we don’t give up passing TDs throughout the course of the game and at the end of games, our D shuts down. If they play us with a healthy L.T. in a power rush mode I still think we can hang but it’ll be shakier. If they try to pass on us they’re going to get hurt.

And I wouldn’t worry too much about Gates tearing us up. Sanders can do alot more than stop the run. He’s not going to fool Sanders and go deep. If we get ahead of them they can take all the 8-12 yard pass plays they want. I don’t think they’re going to stop our offense.

by monstersbox on Dec 29, 2008 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think they stop the offense either, and you’re right, if the Colts get ahead, things look awfully good. But they do have the potential to at least slow the offense at the start of the game, and there’s no way around the fact that they’re a bad matchup for the Colts D. If the Colts fall behind, we have Peyton so we’ll be confident, but it will be a hell of a challenge for the D to keep them in it.

LT or no LT, Brackett is super important. He’s important to the pass coverage over the middle, and he’s extremely important to the way they play the run or screen when Sproles is in the game.

The 6TD stat is meaningless, as is comparing Clark to Gates. They don’t face each other.

I'm not on the ledge like others right now

Football is an eleven man sport and we’re undefeated without him. We will still win, it just may be more of a shootout than I would prefer.
