Why is Lucas Oil Stadium so lame?
This has been bothering me for a while, so I figured I would pose the question to my fellow fanatics. My family have been season ticket holders since the Horse arrived in Indy, and I've probably been to over 90% of Colts' home games. For those of you who attend games on a regular basis, I think it's pretty clear that the noise we fans were able to make in the dome is a thing of the past that will never return. Lucas Oil is just too big and there is too much space. However, things seem to be beyond that. Why does the Lucas Oil crowd seem to be super lame?
This past Sunday, I had a guy sitting in front of me who had just moved to the midwest from Seattle. He could not believe how quiet the stadium was, especially compared to Qwest Field (a year ago I would have been able to debate him about who had the louder stadium). All year I've had friends text me during the game and comment on how quiet things sound on their TV. In the dome, people would get up for kickoffs and the bulk of time when we were on defense (especially if we were playing good on D.) Now, it seems fans are reluctant to even get up and make noise on 3rd down. In the dome, after every first down, there was a section in the upper corner of the stadium that would chant in unison, "one, two, three, uhhhh first down!" Lucas Oil? Nope. I saw the same section try to get the chant going the first couple of games this year, but the lack of interest and participation eventually killed it.
I LOVED that the dome was one of the loudest places to play in the NFL. It was just that much more fun as a fan knowing that you could have at least a tiny effect on the course of a game by making so much noise that the other team couldn't communicate their audibles or their linemen would commit a false start or two. Plus, it's just fun when the crowd is actively participating. Knowing that Lucas Oil was probably not going to be as loud, my attitude at the beginning of the year was "well, as fans, we will just have to yell louder." Apparently others don't seem to share my sentiment. Our stadium has gone from one of the toughest places to play in all of the NFL to having nearly zero home field advantage. Our fans seem tired and bored, and if I were a Colt player, I really wouldn't be all that more excited to play in front of my home crowd because the energy level is shit.
I don't know if this is silly, but if this is to change, here at stampedeblue seems as good a place as any to mount a campaign. What's the cause? Is it the fact that the new stadium with higher ticket prices and attempts to bring in more revenue have resulted in the loss of true fans, in exchange for people who don't care as much, but simply can afford to go? Is it just that the Colts got off to a rocky start, and the fair weather fans of Indianapolis aren't as excited this year? Or is it just that we fans just can't make it as loud, and people are frustrated, so they aren't trying anymore?
The better question might be, can we fix it? Or how can we fix it? The only suggestion I have is this - at the beginning of the game, they have an animation on the stadium ribbon boards that say "stomp your feet." I am pretty certain that a lot of people have metal floors under their feet, and the entire stadium stomping on it would create a pretty loud noise. I am guessing the Colts organization feels the same way, hence their encouragement of stomping. If everyone got on board with it, it could be something that makes our stadium unique and returns some much needed noise on 3rd downs. I don't know, but I do know I am sick of feeling like my team plays in front of a lame crowd.

Combination
I think its a combination of things. First and foremost, the Luke is twice the size of the Hoosier Dome, with only a marginal increase in the number of seats. I remember one game in particular (can’t remember what team it was against) where it was so loud, and the opposing QB was so flustered, that he lined up to take the snap behind the left guard, it was hysterical.
I agree that a lot more “fair-weather” fans now get to go to more games, for better or for worse. I will say however, that these are probably the same fans who were booing the timeout on 4th and 1 in yesterdays game. Embarrassing.
It's sad
I have been a Season Ticket holder for 5 years now, trekking from Chicago to the games.
I love my Colts but I miss the Dome. Lucas Oil is nice and up to date, but most of the time I feel like I’m at the movies. You know what a woman was doing when I went to the Patriots game?
Reading a book…
This past weekend, our tickets went to some buddies from Crawfordsville (Colts fans) and I watched the game at my brother’s house. My brother looks at me and says: “That place sounds like Ford Field.” OUCH!
Reading a book…very, very sad.

IMO, Lucas Oil Stadium was a phenomenal investment for the city
But it has hurt the atmosphere for Colts games. However, the basketball games here over the weekend were great and we are getting a Super Bowl. I’ve been to high school games, a Colts game, and now basketball games, and it was worth the money. However, we all have left a lot of memories back in the Hoosier/RCA Dome. I’ll always remember the two Colts-Broncos playoff games, the only Colts playoff games I’ve ever been to.
I would be more devastated if Conseco were to be replaced. I’ve seen hundreds of events there including Pacers playoff games, college basketball games, high school games, ice motorcycle racing, concerts, and many more. Conseco is like a second home to me.

Loudest Game Yet
Although I agree that LOS is not as loud as the dome, I have to disagree that the size of the stadium is a major reason for the lack of noise. It is clearly a difference in the fans. Yesterday, I noticed at the beginning of the game, it was louder than it had been at any other time this year. (I am a season ticket holder, and I have been at every game this year.) Even with that, I was one of maybe five people that stood up in my section on every third down for the defense. The fans are not into the games like they have always been, and I believe that’s more a response to the faulty start than anything else. I believe the noise is getting better, and it will continue to do so if the Colts continue on their streak.
I miss the RCA Dome
I have friends that live in Indy and every Christmas/Summer I would go to training camp and the games. I have sat 3 time up in that corner in the RCA Dome. Those people are the truest Colts fans on the planet. Last years winter Tennesse game was the funnest game I’ve ever been to. Especialy when Sorgi came in. One guy stood up and yelled “DAMN YOU SORJI, YOUR COSTING ME MY FANTISY LEAGUE!”. It was so awsome. Chanting “bulllllllshit” and “lets go crap” ie Sorgi. I’ve got tickets to see us play Tennesse again but I just think it will not be the same as the Dome. The Dome = Home.
I loved the Dome's atmosphere
I’ll be giving LOS a shot at the end against Tennessee Week 17. Hopefully it is a lot better than what it has seemed like on TV at times, and what this post has talked about

to read this article. I’ve never been to the Drum, and I hate to think of our stadium as being lame. But, unfortunately, it’s probably true. I haven’t read too much good about the place.
off topic
really like the profile pic. Reminds me of Edge

Yeah.
Whenever I think about him lately (and the fact he’s riding the bench in Arizona and the fact that our running game is less than stellar) it makes me sad. I really find myself believing that if we could get him back in Indy, it would help. I know it probably wouldn’t but, you know….

True but not true
I think the issue is not the stadium, but the fans. I sit in the 500 level, and everyone around me is LAME as HELL. I stand up for every D Play, I paid for my seat, I will yell and stand all I want.
The Colts do a horrible job of game day marketing. There has never been a true “tradition” in sense of REAL tradition for Colts fans in Indy. Go to Lambeau, see tradition.
The “First Down” chant in rather lame and stolen from Purdue fans. If you’re going to steal from PU, at least add at the end “biiitcchhhh”.
The Colts have attempted a la “stealing from the Jets” C-O-L-T-S last year, remember that? Thanks Blue. You assbag.
I am starting a website to address this issue, once it is up I will post a link for feedback.
good issue to address, get off your ass and do your job Colts fan. GO HORSE (the best slogan we got going)Agreed
Watching the games on TV (I’ve only been to one home Indy game – the vagaries of living in California!), I’ve been a bit saddened to see how quiet it is (except when the Colts are on offense). I kinda like Denver’s “IN-COM-PLETE!” after opponents’ incomplete passes, and even the pats’ “FIRST DOWN!” after they get one. Can’t we find SOMETHING?
First Down Chant
As someone who sits in the first down chant section that’s been mentioned, I can at least explain what happened there.
We have lost our chant leader two seasons in a row. Two years ago the guy that lead asked the Colts to pay for his season ticket, and they declined so he stopped coming. Last year’s guy has been mysteriously missing for some reason this year, save a game or two. The guy leading it now has no rhythm and looks like a fool, thus nearly no one does it with him out of annoyance.
