Draft 2008

I feel that I can almost guarantee that we will draft a quarterback on the first day of the draft. With all the decent quarterbacks going, and only really one deserving to go in the first round (Matt Ryan), we could get possible a great one with the picks that we have. Last year's problems with depth at defensive end, linebacker, running back, and wide receiver, there is no way that Polian and Dungy will let our quarterback position be left up to Sorgi (if Peyton gets injured).

Agree or Disagree? Why or why not?

No
Sorgi just got a contract extension and the Colts don't pick until the end of the second round (traded 1st rounder to get Ugoh). The Colts shouldn't use one of their 2+ (might get a compensatory pick at the end of the 3rd round) on a QB who will likely (hopefully) never see the field in any meaningful situation for years.

I wouldn't hate
a late round pick at QB though. I think I remember Josh Betts' practice squad eligibility being up, so if he can't win the backup job from Sorgi he'll be gone and we'll need a new 3rd QB to stick on the practice squad.

The usual caveat
If Polian can find someone he likes, his record says he should be trusted.  Otherwise, a resounding NO.  The Colts need help on the lines, at RB and WR.

Let's face it:  if Peyton gets hurt, the Colts are screwed.  This is a fact of life for any NFL team with an above-average quarterback.  Picking up a QB in, say, the 5th round who comes in and takes Sorgi's place (with Sorgi's recent extension, the Colts don't seem to anticipate that happening) isn't going suddenly allow the Colts to move on without a blip if Peyton goes down.  Yes, Tom Brady was a 6th rounder, but that's a once-in-a-life exception.  So, staying with Sorgi is all we've got, as little as that comforts us.

The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in the stars, but in ourselves.

Start the Campaign
I like Betts because he's mobile. There probably isn't a backup in the league that can do what Peyton does near as well, so why try so hard when you can get someone that does something Manning can't.

I doubt...
I doubt Polian and Dungy would draft a QB before the 6th or 7th round.

Too many needs to fill, too few draft picks.

Besides, they see something in Sorgi... They wouldn't have extended him if they didn't.  If he ever gets the chance to play with the 1st team offense for a few games, and I hope he never does, maybe we would find out what they see in him.

I left my account
signed on and farris6659 got ahold of it and posted this smut with my account. I disagree with him thinking we would draft one and told him to post it on here to get everyones opinion, he is just not confident in his prediction so used my name. How classless he must be a closet patriots fan.

Sorry about that...
nicjohns is my cousin and I was on his laptop. I thought I logged on my name, guess not. I still stand by my opinion though. Peyton isn't going to last forever, and with the way we're transitioning from Dungy to Caldwell, why wouldn't they use the same method for our quarterback position so there aren't seasons with a rookie quarterback that we don't make the playoffs.

Peyton's said
16 seasons is an amount that sounds right to him, that leaves 6 more. I'm not sure walking away will be that easy for him though, he could stay around longer. Athleticism isn't a big part of his game, so until his arm strength starts to fail (and that takes a while example-Favre) he won't decline much.

Really?
Thanks for the info. I thought he said after the superbowl that he planned on that being the halfway point, which would put him at 18 seasons. I'm not happy to hear him say 16, but if that is accurate, I'm glad to know.

He said halfway
two years ago here-http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2451796

If he said it again last year and is thinking 18 (like his number, kind of cool) that'd be awesome too.

I thought the Colts only had 1 first day pick
The draft changed this year, the first day will just be the first 2 rounds.

good call

I forgot about that. I would be a lot more excited about watching a more streamlined first day if the Colts had a 1st rounder though. Whatever, Ugoh was worth it.

No QB
The QBs in this draft suck terribly.

yeah
We're screwed if P goes down.  Why waste a pick on a guy that won't get any play time for just that scenario?  It's not like he'll be a savior if P goes down with absolutely no gametime before then.  If anything, we should pick up a savvy veteran who can still throw the ball a bit.

No way
IMO it'd be silly to spend a higher draft pick on a backup qb when they have so many other needs. If Peyts goes down then the team is most likely screwed regardless if it is sorgi or some other guy.

Oh and I also hope Peyton plays 18 seasons. I think it'll come down to how long Farve plays and how close Manning gets to those records after 16 seasons.
