CLARK SIGNS

We got him for six years!

They don't say how much, but who cares, right? I mean, now we have one of the best TE's in the league signed, along with many other key positions.  QB, RB, WR, TE, etc. Wow.  The next several years should prove to be pretty fun.

Yeah
Until we inevitably run into cap problems. How do we keep signing these guys to long term deals and not run into cap problems? Is someone checking this stuff? Is Manning secretly making the veteran minimum and no one is telling us?

Excellent
I don't have to rename my dog now.  She was named after hockey player Dallas Drake and Dallas Clark.  Drake left the STL Blues for the evil Red Wings this season and I was hoping Clark would be signed to a long term deal.

I agree that Witten is the best TE in the game... but I don't see how Clark can be out of the Top 5.

Great signing!

so...
Does that mean the Colts could use the franchise tag on someone else now if they wanted?

by KingRichard on Feb 20, 2008 8:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

If they could they still wouldn't
7.5million for Jake Scott or Dylan Gandy
4.5million for Ben Utecht
8.8million for Josh Thomas
6.3million for Darrell Reid or Dan Klecko
4.4million for Matt Giordano
all no's

I know it was an in theory question though, can't answer that one.

No bigtime rookies
There would be no one left to franchise.  The two biggest names the Colts might lose would be Josh Thomas or Jake Scott.  Personally I don't trust people with two first names.

I think a big reason the Colts have been able to resign guys is they haven't dropped huge bonuses to rookies year after year because they draft so late in the first round.  This year with not even having a first round pick they know they won't need the room to hand out huge bonuses soon.

We've got cheap guys at expensive positions like RB, LT, cornerback, Linebacker, even Wayne at WR is cheap for what he does.  Polian is a genius and he's really kept the core of this team intact intelligently.  He knows the guys we let go can be replaced and even if they are good but makes sure to have guys who don't come along every year like Freeney, Sanders, Clark, Manning resigned.  The man is a genius and the fact that he has signed all of those guys long term when they were in their prime is a testament to that.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

The Colts Pay For 5 People
Manning, Harrison, Clark, Freeney, and Sanders.  The rest all make nothing compared to the rest of the league.  It's just the cycle.  In 5 years, none of these guys will stay besides the superstars (Manning, Wayne, Clark, Freeney, Brackett, Sanders, Saturday) and the young players drafted in the past 3 drafts.  That's just how Polian works.
