The effect of cheating

Here is why past cheating is revelant to this season.  When the Colts started off their season 13-0, everybody was up in arms because Dungy said an undefeated season was not one of their goals, that the goal was to win the Super Bowl.  He was exactly right on that point.  For a team to suddenly go from not winning a Super Bowl to winning a Super Bowl undefeated would be a huge leap considering all of the accompaning pressure that would go with an undefeated season.  However, if you have already won 3 Super Bowls, the amount of pressure on you is reduced considerably.  If the Pats failed in their quest, well, they still have 3 Super Bowl trophies.  If Belicheck had said to his team that their goal was to go undefeated without any prior Super Bowl titles, his team would have thought he was nuts.  But if you already have 3 titles, you have that experience to draw from when pursuing the undefeated season.

Even if they complete the undefeated season, the whole Patriot dynasty will be questioned and talked about for decades because of the alleged and proved cheating.  I would not be surprised to see a book or books come out from former Pats players and employees documenting what they knew about the Pats and their cheating.  In this day and age, money talks, and everybody is going to try to profit from the Pats undefeated season.

The stance taken by the NFL will only increase scrutiny on this story.  When reporters smell blood in the water, they will always try to be first with the story.  All of the love they have shown for the Pats by ignoring this story will be forgotten when careers can be advanced and money can be made by being the first to find out events and report on the story.

So, after the game is over, let's all sit back and watch these events unfold.  That "undefeated" season will be talked about constantly, it just may not be in the way Pats fans want it to be discussed.
