What if?

What if I told you that your quarterback, through the equivalent of the first 4 games of his career, completed 61% of his passes, throwing 6 touchdowns and only 1 interception.  What if those games were played with 2nd and 3rd team offenses and receivers who shouldn't be allowed to look at a football.  What if the opposing team were playing their starters in hopes of winning the game?

Ladies and gentlemen... Jim Sorgi.

I've seen a lot of "Sorgi sucks" comments around here the past few months and I just don't get it.  Is everyone pissed that we lost to the Titans?  Do you really think that was on his shoulders?  We gave Peyton a free pass in the New England game when he was throwing to Moorehead and Aromashodu, so why is Sorgi blamed?  The guy has thrown 126 passes in his career and we're ready to evaluate him?  We're ready to get rid of a QB who's only lost one fumble and thrown one interception in his entire career????  I'm just struggling to figure out what he's done wrong.

Now, I'm not saying he's the 2nd coming of Peyton Manning, but who are you going to get that's better than Sorgi?  You can waste a draft pick on a QB, but why?  He'll be 32 before Peyton retires.

Would you really feel comfortable with anyone else under center besides Manning?  Honestly, it doesn't matter who's back there if Manning isn't.  I say we use the draft to build depth at positions who might actually have a chance at making the active roster.

If you disagree... don't forget to enter your own Mock Draft in the challenge.

Sorgi does suck
but so do the majority of the QBs employed by the NFL. I don't think a 6th/7th rounder is to much to risk for a shot as someone who could suck less and possibly not at all.

That seems harsh.
It also means one of two things. 1) There are many good QB's out there that somehow are not gainfully employed by the NFL for whatever reason. Or 2) The best QB's are in the NFL, and your standard for not sucking is too high.

I think we are pretty spoiled by #18, and I dread the years following his eventual retirement. One problem will be that the next guy will always suck living in that great shadow. Maybe we'll be fortunate and get a Steve Young experience, though.

I watch my son play the position and dream of being a NFL QB someday, and I think of how many kids have that dream. Most will never see it realized. I think you have to be a pretty special QB to even land in the NFL. Some, however, are the greatest of the greats. Like Peyton Manning.

Oh no doubt
I'm ridiculously spoiled by the Colts having Manning by whole NFL watching life.

Nice try
But Sorgi sucks hard. And I agree that a 6th rounder can't be much better than him. I think we should have signed a veteran QB, and then take a QB early in about 3-4 years.

But I'm nobody, and I'm sure Polian knows better than I do. But if I never have to see Sorgi playing again I'll be a happy guy.

Dennis Dixon
Why aren't we talking about Dixon? We could get him late in the draft, he could ride the bench for a year or three, let his knee heal up, and learn from the best. Let's be realistic: Sorgi isn't a long term solution, but he's also an unknown. With such a limited body of work to judge, there's no great way to evaluate him.

I think, if Dixon falls to the later rounds, he could be worth a 6th or 7th round pick.

Why?
A year or three???  Are we trading Peyton???

I'm not claiming that Sorgi is a long term solution, but do you really think that Dixon wants to sit on the bench for the next 6-8 years while we groom him?

Realistically, the only reason we're drafting a QB is to groom him to sit on the bench.  I'm just saying that it's far to early to start grooming Peyton's replacement, and I'd rather address this "need" elsewhere, such as resigning Shaun King.

This draft needs to be used to build depth and address needs.  Backup QB is the least of our needs.  It doesn't matter if Sorgi, Dixon, King, or Matt Ryan are back there... you're not going to like the results.

Dixon
We've always  been fortunate in that Peyton hasn't gotten hurt. But I'd be lying if I said that I was thrilled with the possibility of watching Sorgi come in if Manning goes down. Is Dixon an unknown quantity? Sure. But he's young, we could get him for a very late round pick, and if he turns out to be a great QB he could be the Steve Young to Manning's Joe Montana. I'm just saying, it's something to consider.

We really have a shitload of picks
And not too many needs. In the 6th and 7th rounds, I rather have the Colts drafting for value, and not to add depth at some position especifically.

honestly...
I could care less who the backup QB is.  I just hope to god (or satan) I never have to see him play except during pre-season.

Good point here
I have to agree with the21eraser here.  Sorgi is certainly not a tier 1 QB in the NFL, but stats don't lie.  He's basically played the equivalent of 4 games, and had one bad one - against the Titans who were playing for a playoff spot.  He's never thrown to the first team receiving corps.  He still has a career passer rating of 90.4.  If you discount that last game, he has a 99.3 rating.  Not too shabby.

Still all I see is Sorgi sucks, Sorgi sucks, he sucks hard, why aren't we talking about [insert QB name here]?  This is way too early to draft an eventual replacement for Manning, as the '10 and '11 draft classes could be deep with QB talent, and that will be much closer to Manning's retirement.

Let's instead build a league-best pass rush and bolster our linebacking corps.  And also find a successor to the slot for when Marvin retires, Reggie moves over, and Gonzo goes outside.  And find a number 2 back to spell Addai.  Maybe find some special special teams players for coverage and returns.  Those are goals worth working on in this draft and the next couple.
