2008 NFL Draft: Colts select C Mike Pollack at pick #59
Just like all of you, my response to this pick was "Who?" With DE Cliff Avril and WR Earl Bennett still on the board, the Colts take an offensive lineman: Mike Pollack, out of Arizona State. It's an odd pick. A weird pick. A pick that just doesn't make any sense. But, it is the second year in a row the Colts use the 2nd round to re-build their o-line.
So, to Mike Pollack, we welcome you to the Indianapolis Colts. This is an open thread.

Most Anti-climactic day ever
but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad pick.
In Polian we trust

Offensive line
Given what a revolving door our offensive line was last year, I am certainly for shoring it up in any way.

Welcome, Pollack.
We may not understand why you are here, but welcome to Indy!

i had a funny feeling
that after reading hundreds of posts here at stampede blue that polian would pick someone completely off everyones radar.

Oh and Shada
was a corner at Iowa who was painfully slow and could never keep his hands off of the WR he was suppose to be covering. When I was trying to think of a guy that would be a waste of a pick he was who came to mind.

I think this is a good pick.
We needed help at the interior offensive line, and hopefully this guy adds to that.
Welcome to the NFL, and the Indianapolis Colts.

Best OC on the Board
Looking forward. Even though it isn’t a flashy a pick, I kinda like it. This just shows how well the Colts are set, that we are drafting for depth with our first pick.
I would still rather have Avril, but I think will work out fine too..

Figures
He never goes the way you think. He’s the top-rated center on the board, but sounds like he’s going to be a guard. Probably fight with Gandy for that open slot then he’ll maybe slide over once Saturday’s deal runs out. But who knows. I’m hoping tomorrow will be more exciting.

Polian does it every year
Addai was the last pick that polian made that seemed obvious when james left. I gave up trying to second guess polian after he picked Peyton..

Pollian picks for the future
With Saturday’s contract up, his replacement is available. Saturday just lost leverage in contract negiotations.

we will know in 3 years
whether this was a smart pick or not..
And the day is just about over..
Tomorrow is a much more interesting day with the picks that make or break a team rather than the flashy high price 1st round players..

Aaaaaand
The first day is over. And it only took six hours. The longest draft in history last year, and then this year was so short.
by Picky on Apr 26, 2008 8:58 PM EDT 0 recs
I like it. We have an opening at guard, and this guy can probably fill that either now, or in a year or two. Plus, Saturday is 32 years old, who knows how much longer he’ll stick around.
I’m just glad we didn’t blow it like we did with Gonzalez last year.
by MrNFL on Apr 26, 2008 8:58 PM EDT 0 recs
Gonzalez blew it?
I don’t understand your reasoning? To judge a WR by one year that really wasn’t that horrible is ridiculous. Marvin and Reggie didn’t start out doing a whole lot their first few years.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

We didn’t need a WR at all. With good linebackers and defensive tackles available, instead of helping our needs, we picked a position that we didn’t need, and not only that, but a guy who we could’ve gotten a round later. Gonzalez was a major reach at a position we didn’t need. We could’ve found a guy of his talent in the 3rd or 4th round. THAT’s why that was a wasted pick.

Pollak said the Colts plan on playing him at guard.

In Polian I trust
I remember being pissed that he took a WR and a Tackle last year. After about a month or two I was grateful he did that. I trust him and with an aging center the pick makes a lot of sense. I was thinking the whole time there was a good chance that he would draft someone we hadn’t even talked about.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

I wanted
actual offensive players. i dont count o-line as offense lol. 33 0f 51 draft picks have been on defense :(

Gandy
is also a convertible Guard/Center. I like this multitasking of positions. GIves us depth.

Guard at first
I believe we’re looking at Saturday’s eventual replacement. The question is, when?
by coltsfanawalt on Apr 26, 2008 9:13 PM EDT 0 recs
OMG
The Colts just drafted the unknown soldier.
Actually, after a minute’s thought, I’m OK with it. Like many of us, I thought we would get an offensive lineman in this draft. Evidently Polian et al. thought this guy was valuable enough to take now, and gamble Howard or even Avril will be there in the third round. With Scott being gone, either Pollak steps in as a guard or Gandy takes over while Pollak learns all the line positions.
The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in the stars, but in ourselves.

what is the chance
that he starts his rookie year???
by coltsfan21 on Apr 26, 2008 9:23 PM EDT 0 recs
This pick makes sense
If anybody recalls, Saturday played guard his first year. If Pollack is his replacement, this allows Pollack to get some NFL experience at guard, and then eventually move over to center when Saturday leaves.
by Blueisgood on Apr 26, 2008 9:27 PM EDT 0 recs
Agreed
That would be nice. Specially if he can play well at OG.

I am puzzled
I understand the motivation behind the pick, I really do. But Howard Mudd is a great, GREAT O-line coach. For us to draft a Center, even though I understand we are probably going to play him at guard for now, in the SECOND ROUND just does not make sense to me.
Earl Bennett was still there. Dan Connor was still there. Xavier Adibi was still there. Like I said, I understand that Polian wanted to add depth to our O-line, but in my humble opinion this was much too early to do so with the level of talent left available in positions I feel like we would need more depth in.

WE MUST PROTECT
OUR GREATEST ASSET. As we all know, Peytons backup is insufficient and if Peyton went down then i dont like our chances. i know peyton has not missed a game and i hope he doesnt (touch wood). our o-line is the MOST IMPORTANT position and we cant just have guys like charlie johnson and gandy protecting our man. o-line this early is making more and more sense as i think about it. good pick polian, very good pick.
by skywalker on Apr 26, 2008 9:34 PM EDT 0 recs
Polian always thinks ahead.
His track record is good. Think about the day that Saturday goes, and we’re panicking about who will fill his shoes. Last year we suffered greatly at O-Line from injuries. Now we have more depth, perhaps Jake Scott’s immediate replacement, and likely Saturday’s eventual replacement. Polian has earned our confidence thus far. I’ll give him mine.

nice, nicjohns, very nice
” Mike pollak
looks fairly impressive to me his name shows up consistently on the top performers list and he is projected by some to go in the 2nd rd. I would be happy drafting this guy who could play guard and be a great replacement for Saturday in a few years. His versatility would help boost our depth at all 3 interior line positions.

Protecting Peyton
As an outsider, I firmly believe the reason the Colts have dominated their division is not only because of how brilliant of a QB Peyton Manning is, but because they’ve never had to overly worry about him getting banged up. If that means preparing for two-three years when they really need Pollak, then so be it.

After careful analysis....
I think the Colts made an excellent pick. Pollak is the best center in this draft, and he’s got “Howard Mudd-player” written all over him. Great technique, great intelligence, and able to play all the interior positions. Described at Arizona State as the “quarterback of the O-line”. Now where have I heard that before?
Pollak is Jeff Saturday Jr., and Polian wasn’t about to pass the opportunity up to take him. He most likely will compete for the starting guard spot this season and will take over for Jeff once his contract is up. Classic Polian pick, as usual. The Colts draft has officially begun.

Running back position
While it would have been great to draft a backup running back, don’t forget that the Raiders drafted McFadden. That means they may release Rhodes. He could be a possibility for the Colts at a reduced price. Pollian has always stated that the draft is only the first piece in upgrading the rostor for the next year. There is the undrafted free agents, unsigned free agents, and players let go by other teams.
by Blueisgood on Apr 26, 2008 10:31 PM EDT 0 recs
Maybe not so weird
We return 21 out of 22 starters next year. The one position we are not returning the starter from last year? Offensive Guard.
We’ve discussed at length that Jeff Saturday is probably not going to last as long as Peyton, and we might need to groom a replacement.
The Colts say they will play him at guard. He will eventually take over at center. Polian solves 2 needs with one pick.
