2008 NFL Draft: Colts select TE Tom Santi at pick #196

So, in the 4th round, the Colts took TE Jacob Tamme. Now, in the 6th round, where the Colts have four picks, they take TE Tom Santi. Santi is a better blocker than Tamme.

Good effort as an inline and second-level blocker. ... Good use of hands and fights to sustain. ... Can track defenders at the second level and works to keep his man from making the play.
This is your 6th round open thread.

UPDATE: Colts draft another OC, Steve Justice, and Michigan RB Mike Hart.

Two things:

1. Mayock giving much respect to Polian. Awesome.

2. Why is it that the NFLN is at commercial during every single pick of the Colts? Why???

Santi a starter

Do we really think he can step in and start in the two-TE set? Or are we looking at Tamme or Fletcher starting alongside Dallas?

Here’s the info on Justice

Athletic and quick…Extremely smart with terrific awareness..Is mobile and can get out in space…Technically sound…Uses his hands well…Light on his feet and slides well…Offers some versatility…Has a lot of experience…Great motor…Hard worker.

Seems like he fits the scheme.

can he

play more than center?

by skywalker on Apr 27, 2008 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it also says the following

..Can also project to guard at the next level…He doesn’t have all of the physical tools you look for but compensates by doing the little things…Best fit in the pros will be with a team that zone blocks.

who is the reciever?

anyone mind getting the scout info on him?

by metal_militia on Apr 27, 2008 4:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

D-III guy

Strengths:
Very good size and bulk…Above average timed speed and quickness..Has reliable hands…An outstanding leaper…Great body control and ball skills…Runs well after the catch…Strong & physical…Solid blocker…Worked as a return man…Productive.

Weaknesses:
Did not play against top competition…Might not play quite as fast as he times…Is not a great route runner…Not real elusive…May have trouble beating the jam and separating from pro corners..Will he still be a big play and deep threat in the NFL?

Notes:
Division III standout….Was a member of the Purple Raider ‘06 National Champion 4×100 outdoor track relay squad…Missed time with a leg injury in 2005…Played in the Texas vs. the Nation game and led the North in receiving..An underrated small school sleeper who dominated his level…Has the physical tools to play in the NFL.

by MrNFL on Apr 27, 2008 4:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I suppose he might make a decent return guy

by MrNFL on Apr 27, 2008 4:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Last pick

Late 7th round, if there is a promising kicker out there, I’d love to see us give him a shot. Vinatieri is old and not that great anymore, if there is someone, might as well give him a shot.

Plus, we could use a kickoff guy.

by MrNFL on Apr 27, 2008 4:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well

he didnt make a fg over 40 yards last year (0/3)

by jochexum on Apr 27, 2008 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was awful last year

Ranked 27th in FG percentage, and he has no leg strength. At least we could get someone who can get 50+ kicks there.

by MrNFL on Apr 27, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't cut him

We paid too much for him, but I think we should look at young guys, because Vinatieri is WELL past his prime.

We’ve had 2 kickers a couple years, remember Gramatica and Raynor used to kickoff?

by MrNFL on Apr 27, 2008 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats the question

Still has the reputation as a great clutch kicker but that can only get you so far…he’s gotta have the physical abilities to still kick

my blog http://shakennbaken.blogspot.com

by shake n bake on Apr 27, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that would make more sense to me

He’s 35, right? A little young to be so far out of his prime for a kicker

by jochexum on Apr 27, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would have to agree there;

He must have had some temporary problem that he subsequently got over. Remember he injured his back at the Pats (though was not allowed to talk about it) and had a brief rough patch there too before returning to his perfectionist form.

The reg season game against the Chargers was the only game in my recollection in which Vinatieri actually failed a FG resulting directly in a team loss.

He’s still got a lot of great stuff left in him. One of the reasons we haven’t see tons of phenomenal kicks from Vinatieri as a Colt is that there are many times when Dungy doesn’t choose to use a kicker, period.

May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

I hope

that he returns to form. But if he doesn’t, he should be out. Because we’re paying him the money to be the best kicker in the NFL, and he hardly has any leg strength. If his accuracy is done too, he’s of no use.

Wheeler

I was doing a bit more research on him

According to several sites, wheeler does struggle in coverage but it is only man coverage he struggles with.

They also note that he exceeds in a zone coverage and should flourish in a cover 2.

With that im thinking Polian and Dungy will keep him at LB

Start it the way you end it. I guess the Colts really want to find Saturdays replacement. Not a bad way to go, get 3 guys that can probably slide over to guard and hopefully one steps up and provides an adequate Saturday replacement. I love the fact that the Colts are smart enough to build from the line first and not go after the sexy picks that us fans generally want.

In Polian We Trust.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

UFAs

It’ll be interesting to see who the Colts have lined up as undrafted FAs—like, hopefully, more pass rushers like Hardie. My guess is that they already have some candidates lined up. The selection of three centers must mean the Colts (by that I mean Polian) decided that this was the year to get O-Line depth and Saturday’s replacement.

The fault, dear Brutus, lies not in the stars, but in ourselves.

Kiper just said

He expects them to move Richard to guard. I’m assuming one of these guys is Saturday’s replacement, but who knows which.

by BSanders37 on Apr 27, 2008 6:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

eh?

I don’t get why you guys don’t get it. The O-line, for the most part, blew ass last year. Granted it was due to injury, but I don’t trust hacks like Charlie Johnson. Just because they carry the title center in the draft, that doens’t mean the Colts are going to use them as such. Moving a guy from center to guard isn’t as big of a deal as taking a left tackle and putting him in at right tackle, and vice versa.

I’m glad, esctatic even, that they went out and got some depth. Doesn’t hurt that these picks will be easy on the wallet either.

by KingRichard on Apr 27, 2008 6:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Drafting centers

I think Pollian drafted centers because they offered the best value in offensive lineman that were left. it didn’t seem as if anybody else had a need for centers.
