Hall of Fame

Reading through the Edgerrin James HoF blog (good job Golden and BBS) made me think about current players and their HoF chances.  So, if you could name 10 active players that deserve HoF consideration, who would they be?  This could probably spark some decent conversation and debates...

Here's mine:

1. Peyton Manning

2. Marvin Harrison

3. Tom Brady

4. Ladanian Tomlinson

5. Edgerrin James

6. Ray Lewis

7. Brian Waters

8. Walter Thomas

9. Torry Holt

10. Derrick Brooks

I know there are others out there that deserve consideration, possibly moreso than these. However, this is my list...  make your own...

I didn't include Strahan simply because he may not play this next season.

Colts on their way to the HoF

But not locks yet:

Dwight Freeney
Reggie Wayne
Tarik Glenn (will not a first ballot, but will get in)
Dallas Clark
Bob Sanders

If Wayne, Freeney, Sanders, and Clark play at the same high level for another 3-4 years, then they will have HoF credentials.

Glenn

I’m on the fence with him. No question he ended his career very strong, but I’m not sure if it was HoF material. Freeney is another 10 sack season away from clinching the HoF. Sanders is as close to a guarantee as a 4 year veteran can be. Wayne is getting there. Clark is playing like a Hall of Famer now. I think the 2006 Super Bowl team could end up with 10 Hall of Famers easily. I also forgot Tom Moore. He could be a Hall of Famer as well.

Glenn retired

before he could rack up a ton of pro-bowls based on reputation alone. O-linemen miss out on the first few pro-bowls they deserve but usually get it back on the downslope of their career, picking up Pro-Bowls that they don’t deserve after their play has declined.

Dallas Clark?

WTF… Why? I agree on all the others, but Clark is pretty much your average TE. Okay, maybe that’s mean. He is one of the top TE in the NFL, but I can think of at least 5 others that are better than him.

Clark has to keep up last season's numbers

for a while.
58 for 616yards and 11TDs all career bests by a significant amount.

His YPR was 10.6

Antonio Gates had 13.1, Tony Gonzalez had 11.8, Desmond Clark had 12.4, and Jason Witten had 11.9. I don’t know which TE did indeed lead the league in YPC, but a lot of guys had better averages than Clark. Clark also drops quite a few passes for an elite TE. I don’t know that much about blocking, so I can’t speak about him in this area.

His 11 TDs was monster, really great. But at some point in the season, we didn’t have too many good WRs playing for us. Our backup RB can’t catch a ball not even if his mommy asks him to. Our second WR was a rookie, and with the exception of him and Wayne, all the others receivers we had were crap. Wayne had a career season, but he scored just a TD more than he did in the previous season. And, more importantly, Peyton’s main target for TD was out nearly the entire season. Harrison caught 12 TDs in 2006. In 2007 he caught a whooping 1 TD pass. I’m not taking anything away from Clark. 11 TDs is still great. But before the season, his most was 5. Let’s see this next season, with Harrison back or with Manning more adjusted to the WRs, and we’ll see if his able to keep it up.
