We were this close to hell

Imagine if Bill Polian had been as dumb as the San Diego Chargers in 1998. If he had, the result would have looked something like this:

Yes, that is a real photo ladies and gents. Here's Deadspin's Rick Chandler:

Was it really 10 years ago that the Indianapolis Colts made the fateful decision to draft Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf in the NFL draft? To mark the occasion, Leaf is showing off his No. 16 Colts jersey — yep, one such exists — which he found while rummaging through some personal belongings recently.

As Colts fans, we missed Jeff George Part II by that much. Thank you, Mr. Polian. By all that is merciful and good, thank you.

in fairness...

if sd would’ve picked #1 and gone with Manning, we would have taken Leaf. those guys were 1-2 that year. so i dont think they were necessarily ‘dumb’ as i am sure the Colts at the time would have been happy with either. obviously that turned out MUCH differently.

and the reason that LA does not need/really want a football team lies within these blogs. the chargers are the only team without and SB Nation blog. how can a team with that much talent, even been to a superbowl within the past 15 years not have enough of a fanbase to support a blog?! i was at the colts chargers game last year and unless you are the USC trojans…so cal just doesnt give a crap about football.

Any blue-blooded Colts fan that sees that picture has to get a chill down their spin and feel a little nauseous.

Bob Sanders eats a forest on Friday so he can lay the wood on Sunday.
