Jaguars WR

I know this isn't about the Colts but it is about a division rival.

Matt Jones was arrested for having cocaine and possibly weed in a parked car.  He was already pretty much a bust but with this happening he might just get released.  The Jags were already thin enough with Wide Receivers and this just adds to all the problems.

Does he end up with Dallas or Cincinatti?

Cut him.

Your resident Jaguars blogger thinks this will be the final straw, no pun intended, in Matt Jones’ career in Jacksonville.

I wouldn't call the Jaguars situation at WR as thin

They went out and got Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson this off-season.

Chris is obviously right, and my bet is on Cincinnati as his landing spot.

my thoughts

exactly… Porter may surprise some people but Williamson has been a huge disappointment since being drafted and can’t seem to catch the ball. They seem to be excited about Mike Walker, who’s still unproven. Williams has been a bust as well. I guess they are not thin at WR, just thin at capable, proven WRs.

Ah yes, Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson, the formidable receiving force that, combined, have less receptions, receiving yards, TDs, and yards/game than Reggie Wayne. I used Reggie because using Marvin would have been a completely unfair. Did I mention that the combined Jerry Porter/Troy Williamson have played 35 games more than Reggie?

I was bored with work and had Excel open, so I took the career numbers from my hybrid Troy Williamson/Jerry Porter and Reggie Wayne and extrapolated numbers based on their current production to come up with per game, per season, and career (12 years) totals.

Over an identical span of time, Hypothetical Reggie will have twice as many receptions, yards, 1st downs, and TDs as Hypothetical Hybrid Jacksonville Receiving Corps.

So, it’s not that the Jags are thin at WR. They’re just thin at good WRs. And if anyone in that organization has any sense, they’ll have been on the phone to dump Matt Jones about two seconds after they got a call from the cops.

Trade

Surely they can find some sucker team that would trade for him.

The Jaguars will probably...

Wait until after Jones has gone before a Judge. No bond is being issued, so Matt is in jail until he goes to court at 7 am tomorrow morning.

Once he starts the legal process with the Judge, the Jaguars should act. I don’t think they’re going to cut him until after he’s out of jail and can actually speak with the team. It’s likely that he’s not had contract with the team since the arrest, even in Arkansas.

Good riddance though.

In regards to the Jerry Porter/Reggie Wayne/Troy Williamson projections, I’d argue that there is some room for change in both Porter and Williamson from their previous situations. The Vikings and Raiders are not exactly the most stable and well operated of teams, and assuming that both of those guys have “peaked” based on what happened there is misleading.

If the Colts had signed Porter or traded for Williamson, would you assume project them as underwhelming failures as well? Or would you give them the benefit of the doubt by going to a new and better environment with a better quarterback? These are things that you simply cannot project. Players with unstable coaching and quarterback history, as both have had, are very difficult to program because there’s not an easy mathematical way to adjust for the chaos.

Now I’m not saying that either one of them is better than Reggie Wayne, but simply casting them aside as if it’s nothing is a terrible way to feel good about the Colts. The Jaguars had a pretty stout offense before adding in Porter and Williamson, Garrard spreads the ball around pretty well, so Porter and Troy need not be Reggie Wayne to help take the Jaguars to the next level. Our offense is different than yours. I’m not saying it’s better or worse, it’s just different. The Colts like to take teams off balance with no-huddle, play-action, and draw plays, the Jaguars are a methodical grind-down that relies on consistent gains to set up the big play. Reggie Wayne is a fantastic number one receiver and the Indianapolis offense is well suited. For Jacksonville, they don’t need Reggie Wayne’s numbers (though we’d take them in a heartbeat) to be successful. If Porter and Williamson combine for 8-9 touchdowns and a thousand yards, they’ve done enough.

You make fair points.

However, about that “not saying it’s better or worse, it’s just different” thing? I’ll say it: our offense is better.

Of course you're going to say that!

You’re a Colts fan, and that’s OK.

The stats say it too.

But then the stats are big Colts fans.

You seem to mistake my intent.

I attempted to write something about the Jaguars and Colts without interjecting partisanship into the mix. Hence my neutral language about the two offenses. Besides, I can’t find ANY stats for the 2008 Indianapolis Colts or the 2008 Jacksonville Jaguars, so it’s hard for me to say which unit performed better during the 2008 season.

Your intent is noble

but your neutrality is misplaced. While miracles do occur and 2008 games still have yet to be played, any inference that the two offenses are or are going to be comparable must be addressed on a Colts site. My considered opinion: nuh uh.

ha!

Its one thing to sign thugs who beat strippers, gun fanatics and selfish egomaniacs, but its another to sign guys with drug addictions, especially players who suck to begin with.

oh really
“He might have moved up into the first round.” Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, didn’t want to speculate where Matt Jones may be drafted, but said he helped himself immensely with his performance at the Combine.
“Well, by golly, I tell you what, we might find a place for him,” Jerry Jones said with a big grin when asked if he’d like to see Matt Jones playing in Dallas. “No one in Arkansas has to doubt whether or not it would be a good feeling for me to see him in a Cowboys uniform.”
Jerry Jones said that he and Cowboys Coach Bill Parcells nicknamed Matt Jones “Jim Thorpe” on Sunday after watching him work out. Jim Thorpe won the decathlon at the 1912 Olympics, played Major League baseball and professional football and is regarded as one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century. “We’re talking about Jim Thorpe,” Jones called out when Parcells walked by. “That’s because of Matt’s versatility and how athletic he is.”
“He’s blessed with tremendous abilities, and I think he’s been able to do some things other people can’t do without straining,” Reese said. “But I think he’s very excited about the NFL and is very willing and able to play wherever he can.”
Jerry Jones said that where Matt Jones plays is “is going to be the big debate as clubs continue to look at him” and didn’t rule out the possibility of quarterback. “It’s not impossible,” Jerry Jones said. “Certainly when you look at some of the things we’re doing and clubs are doing, you don’t have to be the prototype dropback passer to move the ball in the NFL today, especially as you get near the red zone.” Jerry Jones added that it was clear the work Matt Jones put in to get ready for the Combine.
“Most every ambitious individual that comes into the NFL is aware and falls into the stepped up work ethic, the year-around commitment that is required,” Jerry Jones said. “I don’t care what kind of athlete you are or what kind of speed you’ve got.
“The players do it because of the rewards that are there, and Matt’s got every ability and does grasp that. Sure you’re going to work more [in the NFL] than you did in college, because now it’s a full-time job.”

those quotes were before he was drafted in 2006

considering he has sucked for the past 2 years and now is a coke head, I guarantee JJs opinion of Mr Jones has definitely changed.
