Quinn Gray: Is he too stupid to play QB?
From Colt Homer over at Naptown's Finest:
But I could see Gray passing Sorgi before the Hall of Fame Game. Gray was waived by the Texans for not picking up the system quick enough. That could be a problem since the Colts have a much more complicated system than the Texans.
Lorenzen is just a camp body. And a big one at that.
Not a good sign. The Texans offense is about as simple as it gets, folks. It's a zone blocking scheme with designed bootlegs which shorten the field for the QB. It's also very run heavy, and Quinn had trouble learning it.
Not good. Quinn might not last a week.

Bold prediction
I agree – Quinn sucks. But, perhaps foolishly, I have always had a soft spot for Lorenzen. And in the spirit of adventure i will now predict:
Quinn will get cut during or after preseason, but Jared Lorenzen will play heroically, earning himself a spot on the roster (perhaps replacing Josh Betts). Sorgi will cry into his Maytag repairman hat but will remain on the team as THIRD STRING QB.
Don’t let me down, fatty.
Quinn Gray is for real
It is best to do your research before you call a QB dumb. Quinn Gray was released from the Texans because their number 2 QB Rosenfels was not traded to the Vikings as expected. His grasp of the offense had nothing to do with his release.
Also, Quinn was the best QB on the Jaguars while he played behind both Leftwich and Gerrard. He was never given the opportunity to compete for the starting position. All of the snaps went to Garrard and Leftwich. He left a $1.3M contract in search of an opportunity to start. He landed on the Colts behind one of the best QBs ever to play the game. I believe he is in a good place.
Quinn is a Florida native and son of a high school football coach that groomed plenty of NFL players. He knows the game. Also, in college at Florida A&M, he played in a spread offense called the Gulf Coast Offense. It was a no huddle shot gun offense. He can throw that football. He attacks the end zone. He often threw 3-5 TDs per game. He threw 4 TDs against the Dallas Texans last year.
Sure, he has dark skin and a wide nose but that does not make him dumb. He will make the team.

The Texans Said
He didn’t adjust well to the system. That implied that he didn’t learn it in time to perform it. Maybe dumb is the wrong word. He just didn’t grasp the system quick enough.

That is Houston Texans not Dallas Texans. My bad.

I can say that for someone who has never been in a zone blocking scheme, it can be a difficult transition. Tom Moore’s system is complex, no doubt, but the blocking concepts are pretty familiar to just about anyone who’s played football.
(Though, I did read an article on some website claiming that the Colts ran a Zone-Blocking scheme – probably because of our somewhat smallish O-line – but I can look at the tape and see that that is not true)
Maybe someone from Battle Red Blog can give us some insight into why Quinn had trouble with the Texan’s offense.

Actually....
I just jumped over to BRB and read their comments. It seems as though when the Rosenfels trade fell through, they just didn’t need him and granted him a release to at least earn a #2 spot on a roster somewhere. I think HE should have talked to the Vikes and tried to push Tavaris Jackson for the starting spot(I think he or JDB might succeed in that). Then we might be seeing the Vikes in SB 43.

Quinn Gray--A Titan By August?
As I noted here, the “official” explanation for Gray’s release was that he “didn’t adjust well to the Texans’ system.” I’m not sure I buy that. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think Gray signed with Houston because he was under the impression the Texans were going to trade Rosenfels and that he’d be No. 2 on the depth chart, behind a QB who missed several games last year. But the Texans never got the second-rounder they wanted for Sage, and the team has not historically carried three (3) QBs on the active roster under Kubiak. So whether it was Quinn asking for his walking papers or the Texans giving them to him unilaterally, I wouldn’t read too much into the idea that Gray couldn’t pick up the system.
And he’s got to be better than Sorgi, right?
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Give him a try.
He can’t be worse than noodle arm Sorgi can he? He has more physical talent and he also has won games as a starter.
However, many think we have him to learn things about the Jags and Texans so we can dominate them even more. (lol) Not sure I buy that but it makes some Jags fans paranoid.
Gray was 8th in per play value
21st in total, both just as a passer. If he can pick up the offense I’d like him as a backup

Don't Get Me Wrong
I really like Gray. When the Jags didn’t resign him, I was hoping for the Colts to sign him. I just wrote what I’ve heard.
