to rest or not to rest
As I anticipate the beginning of the new football season, I curiously find myself leaping ahead to the playoffs. I'm a Colt's fan....so I can do that, right? I'm still smiling about the superbowl and I have to admit that I admire what the G-men did last winter. Even more heroic than the superbowl, was their final game of the season against the Patriots. They could have played it safe and 'rested' several key players. Or, they could go full steam ahead and try to give the country a real televison treat....and attempt to derail the Patriots undefeated season. They obviously chose the latter and injured at least 3 key players in the process. But, even though they lost a close battle in that game, they stayed sharp and well.......the rest is history. I think by almost winning that game, a new confidence emerged that let them know they could knock off the Pats. I can't help but think that's the best route to go. My personal feeling on the matter is that it's better to keep the players sharp and in the winning mode. After all, resting players hasn't had the best track record in Indy. As much as I like Tony Dungy, I just wish for once he would take the mindset of going for the juggler in those final games of the season....and let the chips fall where they may. It was really difficult to stomach watching the Colts play back-ups in that game with the Titans. When Peyton played his few downs, he made it look easy. What was he, 8 for 8? The Colts were on track for a slaughter, but the plug was pulled. It was fun to watch if only for a series. What are your thoughts?

i agree
i think the importance of momentum can’t be overstated. when your team doesn’t have the winning mentality sustained up until the playoffs, you are less mentally sharp and can lose to a team that is, on paper, inferior (see: cowboys, dallas; colts, indianapolis). i dont think the cowboys rested players but they sure blew ass in their last regular season games, and i think that cost them

Last season showed that
the Colts stars aren’t immune to injury Marvin and Freeney’s injuries didn’t happen in end of season “meaningless” games but they could have just as easily.
In 2005 the Colts had locked up their playoff spot by going 13-0 and continued playing starters into the 14th game. They looked flat and a bit disinterested even though they supposedly weren’t coasting for the rest of the regular season. I think that once your playoff seed is locked up the players lose the sense of urgency and do or die mentality of the normal regular season game, so resting or not isn’t a big deal. The team will start to relax whether you “let” them or not.

Resting Players
I think you only have to look as far as when the Colts won the SB for your answer.
That year the Colts had to play all out just to be a Wildcard,so my thinking on it is they had to give all they had and not have the normal Dungy rest to stay in it which in turn kept the tean tuned up and of course we seen the results.
I know there will be some that will make the argument that you take the chance of getting a key player hurt well this may or may not be true but look at it this way if they are fortunate to get a #1 seed they aren’t getting the contact to keep them in game shape and when it does come time to play (about 2 weeks latter) they stand more of a chance of getting hurt in that first playoff game from not playing than they would if they had been playing and stayed in game shape for as long as they good between games.

Misspellings
You should have seen the story I just posted in the 1-2 minutes between when I posted it and when I remembered to spell check it. It was ugly.

Re..Misspellings
Well I don’t think my spell check that’s on my Google tool bar works on this site and I don’t know of another on here or one that you can use on here.
Even now as I look at my 1st post for today I see where I misspelled another word and missed it,later instead of latter.

Firefox
Firefox does automatic spell checking as you type. Personally, I think it’s a wonderful browser.

I agree.......kind of
I kind of agree with starting players in later games but if Manning goes down thats all she wrote. Trust me, I was at the Titans game. I had to listen to the upper deck season ticket holders chant “lets go crap” when they put Jim Sorgi in. Still every time we rest players or go into a bye week we seem to not bring our A game. Maybe we would see Manning and crew work later into the season if we had a solid back up QB. But then agian every time Sorgi goes in evryone else comes out. Sorgi had a our back up o line and undafted free agent wide recievers to throw to. A guy can only do so much.

RB's
Running backs should be rested because often times they can get “run down” at the end of the year.

ditto
i’m with masterrwayne, in that i think it really depends on the player and/or position in question. for example, i don’t mind seeing freeney or sanders sit in “meaningless” games because they’re injury prone and they never have a problem with consistency/intensity. likewise, manning always seems to lose a little bit when he doesn’t get his regular reps, and since he never gets hurt, (knock on wood,) i don’t see any reason not to play him.
