Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Start Streaks

Any body else wonder if peyton for some reason misses a start this season. (say if we decided to play it safe once we have the division locked up).  If Favre would finally retire and stay retired?  I wonder how much of Favre's decision to return had to do with the fact that Peyton could possibly challenge that record in particular.   I just can't understand otherwise why Favre would bother to return when the Packers didn't want him on the field yet were willing to offer him big bucks to do something else.  I truly hope when peyton is done he doesn't try to hold on like this.  It seems terribly selfish to play that kind of game with a team who did so well by you on Favre's part.

Hmm...

I can see where you are coming from and might think this. However, to be completely honest, I really think Favre just loves football. I had similar thoughts about the all-time passing yards record but get the impression that Favre is first, and possibly only, comfortable with himself when he’s playing football… it’s just his world and it’s a hard one to leave.

*Ever seen The Shawshank Redemption? After serving 20 or 30 years in a single prison you kind of get used to your way of life, the “outside” world kind of passes you by and you feel somewhat outdated or worthless away from the place you’ve become accustomed to. I think it’s something like that for Favre.

The only player who gave me a feeling like that, a feeling which has not changed despite the fact that he retired is Emmitt Smith. I really felt like it was all about the record for him and that his career numbers make him seem better than he really was. Don’t get me wrong, he is easily one of the best backs to play the game, but career rushing yards record or no… he’s not the best back to play the game. IMO, Barry Sanders was a better running back than Smith and has a more legitimate claim to possibly being the best back to play the game (and if he had continued playing he would hold the all-time rushing yards record btw – minus career ending or altering injury of course). Sanders did what he did behind a Lions offensive line that was so porous I could probably have used it to wash my car. The Cowboys had one of the best offensive lines in the league during most or all of Smith’s career, and they still have one of the stronger offensive lines in the league today.

Sorry for the side track :)

I agree with that

Oh I definitely agree that football is probably a major part of his identity and he hasn’t moved beyond that yet, but I wonder if Peyton hadn’t been on pace for some of those records if that may not have tipped his decision to stay retired since he would have had a claim to records that otherwise would have not been likely to be broken for a long time…

Interesting

We all know Favre owns most major QB records including consecutive starts. I actually wondered if Favre wanted to extend the record not to protect it from Peyton, but to overtake Jim Marshall, who holds the non-punter record with 282. (For the record, Jeff Feagles owns the all-time-any-position record for consecutive starts, but I don’t think non-kickers care about that.) If he plays two more seasons, Favre would own the iron man record for non-kickers. And I agree with Bamock that he loves to play football, but I wondered if that one last record might mean something to him.

I doubt it

Brett spent the past 5 years going back and forth with the retirement issue. Rightfully so, the Packers had had enough of it and pressured him to make a decision early enough so they could make their adjustments. I think that it was just to early for Brett in all honesty. Had he not felt that pressue, I believe he would not have retired…he would have kept the Packers on pins and needles again, tho. Brett clearly loves playing, I doubt he’s ready to give that up. I seriously doubt his decision to come back has much, if anything to do with the consecutive starts.

As far as Peyton’s future retirement…this seems to be a subject I’ve seen alot lately…he will go out with class and dignity. Its just the kind of person he is. I would be beyond shocked if Peyton did anything remotely close to what Brett has pulled.

And, I agree, Brett Favre has behaved like a spoiled, rotten child who will do whatever it takes (including throwing himself on the ground kicking and screaming- ie: Greta) to get what he wants when he wants it.
