Chappell and P. King were correct

While I'm as proud of the Colts as the next fan, we need to be careful not to blind ourselves to reality.

Yes, Peter King wrote a story in which he expressed concern for Peyton Manning's knee.  I realize it's not a pleasant possibility to contemplate, but why shoot the messenger?  Manning, himself, was unwilling to say that he'd definitely be ready.  To me, that sounds like King got it exactly right, yet some are ready to brand King an irretrievable asshat for daring to raise such a scenario.

Similarly, a man was shot with a gun Harrison owned, and the case was never solved.  I didn't enjoy hearing one of our perrenial stars' names being drug through the muck either, but this was a legitimate story, and ultimately it was Harrison's responsibility.  I don't understand how we can legitimately jump all over Chappell or another reporter for DOING HIS JOB.  It would irresponsible journalism NOT to ask.  Groundless speculation should be attacked, but it was usually apparent to me when a reporter was speculating and when he was reporting the facts.  Harrison is innocent until proven guilty, but when someone is shot by his gun, that is newsworthy.

I read the Patriots' Planet board with amusement because they've basically compiled a list of every journalist who has dared to question the integrity of the Pats for a decade's worth of deliberate cheating and rendered each of them a hack journalist unworthy of a job.  To me, it would a lot less work if they compiled a list of those who haven't comdemed the Pats because any responsible journalist would.

Let's not be like Pat fans and shoot the messenger everytime someone has the impertinence to ask an objective question of our team or its players.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Reporting

You apparently didn’t see or hear the hack job of reporting done by WIPP radio and Mike Florio who admittedly went by the reporting of his good friend (his words not mine) from WIPP radio.

In Marvin's case

Many Many Many details were reported incorrectly and those false reports picked up by just about every news outlet

Fair enough

If a reporter was reporting hearsay and rumor, then any criticism would be completely deserved. I was only defending Chappell and King. Nothing they said seemed to warrant the castigation they were receiving.

These guys

appear to me, at least, to be reporting half truths from unnamed “sources”. And Marvin’s name did get drug through the mud because of it – unnecessarily…and Chappell wonders why Marvin doesn’t want to talk?

As far a PK is concerned…well. That article was ridiculous. I mean, I saw no facts regarding Peyton’s progress in that article. What I do know is that Irsay is saying that Peyton is right on schedule. That’s not to say something can’t happen, but that is something I think we all realize. When PK isn’t ready to bet on Peyton NOT coming back – what was the point of the article, except to stir things up and sell some ads?

We can all speculate all day long. As a Colts fan, I’m a fan of the team and of the individuals as people. I don’t like to see them get trashed.

See both sides

I would agree with Genghis on the point that we don’t want to stoop to Pats fan level. My take on the two issues at hand:
Marvin: Fact speculation and just plain erroneous reporting is completely unnacceptable. Most of the reports on MH tended to bleed that way so criticism of those guilty is warranted. I would agree that Chappel bringing it up was also warranted as it seems to me he’s giving Marvin a chance to dispel much of that speculation. Marvin should know that the Star is going to give him the benefit of the doubt and not try to spin it away. The Star is always licking the nuts of the Colts organization even if they don’t do that great of job of actually covering the Colts as a whole.

Peyton: I didn’t have a specific problem with PK’s article and assertions. HIs piece is an edtorial and not a news story and therefore is suppose to be about opinion. His opinion was basically that the Colts are possibly being too optomistic in their public pronouncments that PM will be fine for Game 1. To be honest probably ALL of us here fear that in the back of our minds too. Especially after the Marvin knee fiasco from last season. I think he’s a deuche for not believing Manning will insist on starting (but he basically admits that at the end of that section too with his “I wouldn’t bet against him…” comment. Even Peyton himself didn’t sound 100% the other day on if he was go for Game 1.

Anyway let’s work to call out the really bads ones (Mike Florio being the worst) but also work to avoid going down the long dark path to the dark side where Pats nation mostly resides!

Go Colts!

My problem

With PK’s article is not what he wrote about, it was the sensationalist headline. Of course he wants to comment on Manning and his odds to play, but he TOTALLY contradicted his actual thoughts in the headline. When I saw it at the bottom of the page on cnn, It said something to the effect of Manning’s streak will end game one. Then he later went on to say that he wouldn’t bet anything to back that up. In other words he made some blaring headline when his thoughts were really the opposite. I understand you want page views, but that is the kind of thing that is over the top and totally bothers me about the sports media. There’s nothing wrong with writing the article. He had to, he has the right to, and he should. But don’t attach a tabloid headline to it.

And I’m totally on Marvin’s side. He is innocent until proven guilty, and a shooting is newsworthy, but Marvin is a good guy, he’s stayed out of trouble his whole career, and it’s clear he doesn’t like the spotlight. I’ve always disagree with the statement “it’s the medias job.” No, it’s their job to report the news. It is not their job to probe people until the scream. And if it was a real ongoing investigation, and Marvin was involved, he wouldn’t be able to comment anyway. But, if you take the stance it is Chappel’s job to get a quote for Marvin, you also have to accept that, as a someone who has covered the Colts for years, he knows Marvin. If he wants an answer he would need to be delicate, not push the issue, and get the clue that Marvin NEVER talks to the media, has earned his right to be left alone, and if you ignore those 2, you have to expect him to be angry with you. Ask him once, politely, if you have to, then drop it. He’ll be lucky if he ever talks to Marvin again. And honestly, I think he knew that before he questioned him.

To Be Fair

To be fair, writers don’t write the titles, headlines, or RSS feed headlines.

Agree and Disagree

Neal I agree that the main problem was the sensational headline but as TDM correctly states the authors typically have no say on headlines. I wrote a whole non-fiction book and didn’t get final say on my title or even much input on the cover.

But I totally disagree with your assertion that Chappell should be “delicate” with Marvin and his feelings. Marvin doesn’t have to answer and he has every right to leave but I think Chappells job is to ask that question. What is his job if it isn’t stuff like that? Personally his game and practice accounts tend to currently occupy most of his column inches but to me are the least valuabe thing he could do for us the fans. Take all the corrupt CEOs that have caused the recent banking crisis, even though they haven’t been charged with a crime does a report not have a right to ask them about their actions and activities?

by Rob-Westside on Aug 21, 2008 3:18 PM EDT   0 recs

i didn’t mean he shouldn’t ask the question. i meant he should phrase it in a way that won’t upset harrison, if that that is even possible. it probably isn’t. but ultimately what i meant, is that you can not ask marvin a question like that and not expect him to be angry about it. it’s not chappell’s job to badger him about his performance in practice coming off knee surgery. i think that, given marvin’s history of staying out of the spotlight, it would be wise to tread carefully when he is talking to the media. maybe it is chappell’s job to ask the question, but i don’t think he’s doing it well if he asks questions that will make harrison unlikely to talk to him in the future. i just don’t think it’s a very good idea to badger a star player for your hometown team, when you look down the road.

and to answer your question: yes you have a right to ask a question about corrupt activities. but if there is an ongoing investigation where the person is a suspect, no you can’t. they are not allowed to speak. this doesn’t apply to marvin because he isn’t a suspect. but once again, in this case, i don’t see it as a question of whether it’s ok to ask, but rather how to ask it and approach it. you are not going to get results by pouncing on someone who isn’t likely to answer anything anyways

Badgering?

Chappell didn’t “badger” Harrison. He did his job. His job is to objectively report the news that Colt fans want and deserve to hear. Harrison first got snippy in response to a perfectly legitimate question: whether or not he felt he was back to where he was before the injury. What could be a more pertinent question than that?

He offered no opinion on whether he is back to where he was before an injury to his left knee forced him to miss 11 games last season.
“I mean, have you been in Terre Haute watching practice?” Harrison said. “You can write what you see. That’s the best way I can tell you.”

Informed that Colts fans might prefer to hear Harrison’s assessment, he said, “You all seem to know more about it . . . you all write what you see. That way I won’t have a comment.”

Chappell is a consumate professional in my estimation. If Harrison doesn’t want to comment, then that is his right. But a journalist is not doing his job if he caters to a “hometown” team or athlete. If you’re truly a professional, you don’t have a hometown team. If you do, then you’re Vic Ketchman of the Jaguars or Bill Simmons of Boston. Neither of those individuals exhibits professionalism. Can you imagine Vic objectively reporting the allegations of “piped-in noise” in the RCA Dome or Simmons challenging Bellichick on Spygate? As long as we have Chappell, we know we’re getting the straight scoop. He has journalistic ethics.

Peter King

Is not concerned about Manning. lol so many in the media would LOVE if it Manning was out for some time so they can hype up their wet dreams over teams like the Jaguars.
