Umenyiora done for the year; Merriman likely done as well
Wanted to make a FanPost on this, but it seems the defending champion NY Giants just lost their best pass rusher for the season.
New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will have season-ending surgery on his injured left knee Tuesday.
Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets, and Dr. Russell Warren told the team on Sunday that an MRI found a tear in his lateral meniscus.
"It was obviously the news that I did not want to hear," coach Tom Coughlin said. "But after listening to the explanation and Dr. Warren's thoughts on it, I am convinced that this is the right procedure and the right way to go."
It also looks like Shawne Merriman's knee injury is much worse than initially thought. He has two tendon tears, and the injury is potentially career threatening. He is likely done for 2008 as well. DE Jason Taylor was also hurt last night, and will be out for two weeks.
Before the season has even started, several high profile defensive players are now out for 2008. It's sad and frustrating not just for the fans of those teams, but for fans of football period.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Injuries
Well, we aren’t alone on the injury front at least. It is pretty unfortunate though.

Injuries
I went to Foxsports last night to look at sports and the entire “Recent Headlines” section was listing injuries from the weeks games, and almost every player mentioned was a top tier player on their team. What is going on this year?
I also blog at Speed Blue Nation

I Don't Know
But it is good that our starters aren’t playing. If someone has a stubbed toe, don’t play them. The injury bug has taken over the league. It’s weird. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Osi Umenyiora, Shawn Merriman, Jason Taylor, all hurt.

Not to mention
Marques Colston, Carson Palmer, Ryan Grant, Kevin Curtis, Ryan Torain, Ahman Green, etc. Obviously some of these are not as crucial as others, either due to the severity of the injury or the caliber of player, but all make the fans hold their breaths. Nobody needs to be getting hurt in preseason.

It'd be great
if they’d shorten the god awful preseason/

Giants might now be
The worst team in their division with all of the defensive losses they’ve had. They’ve gotten worse defensively by far, and the offense really isn’t improved.

I feel a bit of sympathy for the Giants and Osi, however I’m not going to say their season is moot this early.
As for Merriman, all I have to say is, karma is a bitch isn’t it? I feel no remorse for that juicer. I also don’t understand why most of you are pulling the, “Well it sucks the Colts won’t be able to beat them at full strength” card. Injuries happen, and I’m definitely not going to feel bad if the Colts crush them into submission when their best (excuse me while I laugh) defensive player doesn’t play.
We Colts fans did not pay $720 million dollars in public funds to build a brand new stadium that will get opened on Sunday Night Football by Jim Friggin Sorgi.
