John Clayton: Jeff Saturday out until Week Three with leg injury

From John Clayton's ESPN "blog":

The bad news is he probably won't have his starting center Jeff Saturday. Saturday suffered a leg injury in Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills and could be out a few weeks into the regular season. Seventh-round pick Jamey Richard might be used as the starter if Saturday can't play.

The good news is Saturday is not done for 2008, but this is yet another ANNOYING injury for the Colts. Fortunately, the Colts have a strong stable of good centers. Colts.com is also saying that Ryan Lilja could practice at center with Mike Pollak, a college center, would play Lilja's guard spot. Thank goodness Polian invested so much in the o-line this off-season.

I don’t even know what to say. What the hell is wrong with him? What the hell is wrong with this teams’ legs? WHY CAN’T THE COLTS STAY HEALTH FOR MORE THAN A GODDAMN WEEK?!!?!PKT12O3JTOPJWTPAO JPpojgaspjgajpgfa

We Colts fans did not pay $720 million dollars in public funds to build a brand new stadium that will get opened on Sunday Night Football by Jim Friggin Sorgi.

injury prone

Being so obviously injury prone, you would think that Polian would not opt for a 5th pre-season game!!!!!

pretty sure

I think it was in the Denver playoff game, when Saturday moved over to guard to match up with Price.

Definitely sucks to lose the best center in football

Makes you wonder when the last time was that Peyton took a snap from a different center. Hmmm…

Luckily, Johnson can be a serviceable guard, and Pollak can come in and probably play decent. It hurts a lot, but I think we’ll manage for a few weeks. Could be a lot worse. We still went 13-3 without two of our best guys last year. It’d just be nice to see this team at full strength…eventually.

I'll Believe It When I See It

Didn’t ESPN say Eli Manning could be out for all of last year after hurting his shoulder? Yeah.

I agree

I rather listen to facts, rather than speculation. From what Clayton mentioned, its speculation by him saying “he probably won’t have his starting center” and “could be out a few weeks into the regular season”. Notice the “probably” and the “could” part of his statement. I’m not saying he won’t miss any regular season games, I just do not want to assume or speculate. Like Colts Homer mentioned above, “I’ll Believe It When I See It” so lets not get ahead of ourselves quite yet. If it is until week 3, so be it, but the Colts are all about another man up and filling in the hole.

Clayton usually is pretty good with getting things right

If this was Mortensen, I would be pretty skeptical, he’s seemingly ALWAYS wrong (and I think he was the one on the Eli story)

Let’s hope they are wrong and Saturday is there week 1.

True

I’ve always liked John Clayton. He gives out better info than Mort, but it still seems that ESPN is wrong on every injury. Again, I’ll believe it when I see it.

Maybe

But I didn’t see anywhere in his report that Saturday will be back until week 3, which I think was assumed by everyone. We just do not know yet. Also, Clayton also mentioned Jamey Richard as a possible backup. However, so is Justice, Pollack, and Lilja in which he didn’t even think of talking about. Everyone at ESPN wants to get the first report in by speculating things rather than giving actual facts the majority of times when it comes down to injuries or what not.

The 2nd round pick is looking a LOT smarter right now

But thank fricking christ it wasn’t his bursa sac.

Not good to hear

The first three games, the interior line is going up against Tommie Harris, Pat and Kevin Williams, and John Henderson. Hopefully they’ll be up to the challenge…

GAHHHH!!!!!!

Christ. The Colts should use this years assets to hire an allstar team doctors and trainers next season.

Cautiously Optimistic...

Don’t get me wrong folks, Jeff Saturday is one of the best Centers in the league. One of the biggest reasons for this is that he has directed the offensive line for years and has perfected his communication with Peyton Manning when the line has to make adjustments in blocking assignments and the like.

That said, we’re facing the very real possibility that this is the last year we’ll see Saturday in a Colts uniform. It will be sad when he moves on and he seems like the kind of player who plays to win and plays because he loves the game of football more than for a paycheck. However, Justice or Pollak are being bred to take over for him next year. If the Colts thought Saturday would be back I really don’t think they would have signed Lilja to his deal. Only time will tell.

Ultimately, I have confidence in our ability to play well without Saturday if necessary. That’s not to say that I’m looking forward to the almost foregone conclusion that mistakes in the middle of our line that would not be made with Saturday in the lineup probably will be made when he returns. However, I have a great deal of confidence in our young trio of interior offensive linemen and think that they will quickly develop, if they have not already, to the level necessary to handle first team defensive line competition. Ultimately, what I’m trying to say is… if we went into a game with Richard at LG, Justice at C and Pollak at RG I’d not be worried until they gave me a really good reason to be. Add Lilja and remove one of the rooks and I feel even better about it. The injury sucks… but I’m cautiously optimistic.

Having said all that, in regards to the overall injury “proneness” of our team. I have to be honest, outside of last year our team has been one of the most fortunate teams I can think of in terms of having few injuries to starters or key back-ups during the year. If memory serves me correctly, we’ve really only had problems with Sanders for a couple of years (not last year), Diem has started to get nicked up a bit more often, Scott may have fought some injuries in his last couple of years, Injury Timeout Utecht had a few ouchies (rumor has it that he couldn’t return to the game until his Mom was allowed down onto the field to kiss it where it hurt), Clark has missed spotty time at most prior to last season, Harper had an injury in ’06 but none I can remember prior, every once in awhile our backs have been beat up but none have missed substantial playing time since Rhodes filled in for Edge (that I can remember).

I guess what I’m saying is that we seem awfully injury prone based upon our experience with injuries last year. Keep in mind that it is likely that Dungy and Polian are keeping players off of the field for longer, being even more cautious than in years previous because of our horrid injury epidemic last season. From the beginning of the off-season last year until this year we’ve suffered the following injuries (including those who missed sig. time 2 or more games) and other bad luck player losses we did not expect. (which is what really fuels to injury prone label).

Montae Reagor – 2006 (Car Accident) Released 2007
Nick Harper – 2006 (Injured in Playoffs)
Booger McFarland – 2007 (In Preseason/Off-Season)
Tarik Glenn – 2007
Marvin Harrison – 2007
Rob Morris – 2007
Dwight Freeney – 2007
Freddie Keiaho – 2007
Dante Hughes – 2007
Tony Ugoh – 2007
Anthony Gonzalez – 2007
Ryan Diem – 2007
Roy Hall – 2007
Robert Mathis – 2007 (Hobbled)
Joseph Addai – 2007 (Hobbled)

Pre-Season Injuries This Year

Philip Wheeler
Tom Santi
Roy Hall
Jeff Saturday
Michael Coe
Tyjuan Hagler
Peyton Manning
Ryan Lilja

I didn’t go back further but if memory serves me correctly, prior to that… we had few injuries to deal with on a regular basis.

So ...

what is the point of your injury synopsis here ?? I think mostly everyone here at SB will say that the most important thing is how our team looks now, not in 2006 or even 2007 … and although it is only pre-season, 2008 (and 2008 alone) has looked to be quite injury prone so far …

You have 8 people on your 2008 injury list, although you forget Raheem Brock and Mike Pollak who were injured in practice, Curtis Johnson, Jim Sorgi, Robert Mathis and Ed Johnson who didn’t play last weekend, and TJ Rushing who was also hurt in the Buffalo game and not to mention Clint Session, Gary Brackett, Eric Foster and Melvin Bullitt who have all missed practice time … now add those up and my count is more like 19 …

19 players … (and im sure I’m probably missing more) …

that’s a staggering number for the pre-season, I’d be lying if I said just wasn’t a little bit worried … I know we have Peyton coming back and we will be fine, I’d just like to see us get through a week of the pre-season without anyone getting hurt

Just hoping for a quick recovery for Brock, Mathis, Saturday and everyone else … this team at 100% is going to be dangerous … GO COLTS !!!

First of all...

I would like to think that I have been active enough to be a part of “here at SB.” Speaking to people as though they are outsiders or don’t belong to your “club” isn’t exactly welcoming. Secondly, if you can’t see a difference between the injuries I listed from last year and the end of 2006 and the ones we have now during the preseason, I don’t know what to tell you.

Starting DT Booger McFarland went out for the year before the year started.
Starting WR Marvin Harrison went out for the year 4 weeks into the season.
Starting DE Dwight Freeney went out for the year with more than 1/4 of the season left to play.
Starting SAM linebacker Rob Morris went out for the year 3 weeks into the season.
Starting CB Nick Harper was out for the most important piece of Indianapolis Colts history.
Starting LT Tony Ugoh went out just a few weeks into his career for a significant portion of time without Tarik Glenn around because of a surprise retirement.
Starting DT Montae Reagor went out for the year because of a freak car accident on his way to one of our games.

You can list all 19/22 players who are on the injured list or were at some point during the preseason if you like. That’s fine. But only two or maybe three have injuries that will either a) potentially have an impact on the outcome of our regular season games or 2) spend more than a couple of weeks on the sidelines recovering.

1) Philip Wheeler – Underwent knee surgery to clean up a problem he brought with him from college, he may be available in October. Either way, Wheeler is a Rookie draft pick who hasn’t played a down against NFL competition. At best we don’t have a back-up for a few weeks. Compare that to the list above.

2) Tom Santi – One of two new tight ends brought in through the draft. Has not played a single down against NFL competition. Tamme and Robinson are both showing a lot of talent. Compare a first year TE who has not seen action against NFL competition, and who is actually coming off of the injury list before the season even starts to the list above. (he won’t start the season on the injury list or IR… unless he’s doesn’t make the roster)

3) Roy Hall – Hall suffered a hamstring injury which is frustrating because the fans and coaches were looking forward to the opportunity to see just how much he really has developed over the off-season. Either way, Hall’s greatest contributions to the team, particularly early in the year would be on ST and we don’t see to be hurting for strong ST players at this juncture. Is losing the 4th-6th WR, if he makes the team, really comparable to the list above?

4) Jeff Saturday – Recently injured and could miss a couple of weeks. If he misses more that would be disappointing but we have three former centers that project to be on the team which will help us out until Saturday returns. This is the kind of injury that reminds us of the last two years, a key part of our team to potentially miss significant time during the regular season.

5) Michael Coe – Out for the year. He may have potential but our secondary is hardly a weak spot on the team and I doubt he’d have made the team anyway. Compare that to the list above.

6) Tyjuan Hagler – Could be out until after the bye-week. Session is filling in until then. Tore a muscle lifting weights. Would be nice to have him on the field. Session may well be a better LB anyway. Hagler’s injury legitimately reminds us of the luck we’ve had w/ injuries the past couple of years. Something like losing Rob Morris… only getting Rob Morris back a few weeks into the season.

7) Peyton Manning – Returning to practice this week and very likely, imo, to play in the first game. Manning has been playing with bursa sac problems for awhile, the team opted to clean it up during the off season this year. But all the preseason dramatics will likely end with him starting week 1. Again, preseason injuries are not indicative of an injury prone “2008 Colts” team. The team hasn’t even been defined yet and until the regular season starts… all this time is meaningless if players are resting or recovering from injuries.

8) Ryan Lilja -Returning and will be playing in the first game. Another starter resting in the preseason as a precaution that gets all the fans panties in a bind. A non-issue in terms of the injury list of the 2008 Colts as when the 2008 Colts are formed, Lilja will be back in action.

9) Raheem Brock – Returning and will be playing in the first game. Same deal. He doesn’t even belong on the injury list… “precaution.”

10) Mike Pollak – Returning and will be playing in the first game. If he isn’t… Richard/Justice/Johnson are all available. Either way, he won’t miss more than one or two games and I’ll be surprised if he misses even that. One key thing to keep in mind, he was not projected to be a starter anyway until Saturday went down and he hasn’t spent significant time working as a Center so likely would not have took that position. This injury has an impact on our team MAYBE, but if he’s ready to go for the regular season it’s a non-issue.

11) Curtis Johnson – Returning and, if he makes the team, will be playing in the first game. A back-up, situational pass rusher. Compare that to the list above.

12) Jim Sorgi – Has a boo boo, could have easily played last week and will certainly be ready for the first game. If not, the only thing that sucks is that we might carry a 3rd QB which might mean we can’t hang on to some talent at another position. This could be important if it means we’re forced to keep 3 QB and lose another talented player as a result. If Peyton plays and doesn’t get injured, he hasn’t for 160 straight games so far, is an ailing back-up QB really something to get your blood pressure up about?

13) Robert Mathis – Will play in week one. More precautionary junk.

14) Ed Johnson – Will play in week one. More precautionary junk.

15) TJ Rushing – On IR. In my opinion, this is a gift, we can now keep a player like Roby, Ratliff or Silva who will ultimately bring the team more value. I say thumbs up. An injury forced the coaches and front office to make a decision I was all for anyway.

16) Clint Session – Played against the Bills and if held out moving forward it will be more precautionary junk.

17) Gary Brackett – Will be ready to play week 1. Any holding out is precautionary junk.

18) Eric Foster – Will be ready to play week 1, should he make the team. Projects to be a back-up at DT to start the season so we could be without a back-up DT if he’s not available but more likely… this is more precautionary junk.

19) Melvin Bullitt – Had an early injury in the offseason, returned against the Bills. No longer an issue.

20) Marvin Harrison – Has played three preseason games in a row. No longer and issue.

21) Dwight Freeney – Returned to action against the Bills. No longer an issue.

22) Bob Sanders – Returned to action against the Bills. No longer an issue.

So… let me break it down for you. Even ESPN realizes “the Colts go overboard on holding players with any injury concerns out of preseason games.” Understand that preseason injuries don’t mean anything until or unless it affects us in the regular season. Of the 22 injuries that have affected the team during the preseason… the ones below are the only ones we expect to affect us during the regular season.

Only Saturday and Hagler project to have an immediate impact on our team’s success. The others either have a minimal or non-existent impact on our games or are too easily replaced by other talented players on our team to be concerned about. When we open the season it is likely we have only 3 or 4 players inactive for the game… not 19. The worry stuff is unnecessary until we see it during the season for the reason ESPN recognized… “the Colts go overboard on holding players with any injury concerns out of preseason games.” If “here at SB” we worry about the 2008 Colts… how about we know who the 2008 Colts are until we freak out. 22 players on our roster right now aren’t even going to be a part of the 2008 Colts. Just trying to “keep it real.” But worry away… pats ClarkFan44 on the back.

WTF?

With all of the injuries on the better teams, watch Oakland and KC go to the Superbowl. Everyday somebody else is hurt, this is getting beyond ridiculous!

They better make sure Peyton is protected!!

injuries in preseason

I think it is good to keep in mind that what is an injury in preseason isn’t the same as one during the season. If a guy is at all dinged let him sit out, but would probably play in a regular season game. Dungy uses the preseason to evaluate guys, so why put anyone on the field who is even the least bit off if that isn’t the point of the exercise anyways .

Besides even during the season we’d have a huge injury list and by game day a lot of those guys would be on the field.

An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...

Some rational, grounded insight. Thank you for encouraging the boys to relax until they have a real reason to get upset. No wonder so many men have problems with high blood pressure. sigh

True

Injuries not happening in preseason, will happen during the season – when players are playing “for real”.. however, preseason or no, IR is IR and that lasts the whole season…

I just hope that Saturday’s options keep him off IR, even if we lose him for a few games.
