Peyton Manning practices, looks good

From Phil B:

Peyton Manning practiced today. And I saw him. And he looked like the same, old Peyton in some throwing drills, dropping back, running out a fake off a pitch. And he wasn't wearing a knee brace on either knee.

Also, from Phil B:

Before I rush off, here's one other thing for curious minds. When Manning was asked a direct question about if he had a second surgery today, he didn't deny it.
I'm doing back flips that Peyton is back practicing, but Mike Lombardi was right.

It would appear

that Lombardi was right, huh…

Oh well, I suppose the important fact is he is back practicing.

I’m still bummed about Saturday…we get Peyton and lose Jeff all in one fail swoop.

Thank God preseason is almost over, I can’t take it any longer!!!

OMG

I’m freaking out too! The screwdriver I’m drinking is not helping!! The next one will be stronger, but is only temporary relief! The difference between what I was feeling about this team at the beginning of preseason and now has flipped over about 3 times! In only 12 days our season starts and we don’t even know who will be at center, QB, LB or DT to start the game! AAAAHHHHHAAAHAHHH!!!!!

Tarbender, make that a DOUBLE!!!

Pressure is somethig you feel when you don't know what you're doing!

......

Were you freaking out last year when we lost our Glenn and Booger and a whole new mess of players?

And yes Manning will start the season. Good God people still doubt this?

Meh

I’m not worried. Peyton will play against the Bears for sure. Saturday being out is a bummer, but that is because of his leadership with all of the young players on the interior. This is why Mudd plays players all over the line in the preseason. Pollak or Richard could be sufficient at center. Linebacker is not even close to being a problem for me. Session has been great in the preseason, and Hagler and Wheeler will be back in September, giving us our depth back. Defensive tackle has no depth, but if Dawson and Johnson can stay healthy, it won’t come into play too often. We’ve never had 2 great DTs, and we never will most likely.

I may be sounding the alarm early, but...

Saturday makes all the O-line calls and there is NO time to teach another Center everything he knows, especially in concert with Peyton’s calls at the line. In fact, one of the reasons the Colts Offense has been so “offensive” is the lack of cooridination between the QB’s and the O-line when calls are made. Even with Manning playing, the O-line play will be in question without Saturday.

WIth the LB’s, Hagler is out until at least October the last I checked. Wheeler is a rookie with little playing time, does he really know when to play what gap? Session is good and Keiaho, if healthy will stop the run with Brackett at MLB, but backups to rotate in and out are questionable at best.

DT’s – well who isn’t injured? This postion relies heavily on rotation to keep them fresh. As well as the DE’s. They’re all dropping like flies. Big Ed is out right now and Dawson is the only other veteran if Brock is at DE, and noone has said he is going to return to DT. DT is very important for pressure on th opposing QB. Without them the opposing O-line can concentrate on the DE’s and stop any rush we may have.

Sorry, not looking so good to me.

O-line

None of our guys are as good as they are without Manning, not even close. They all benefit from the best QB in the game. Manning will be fine with a new center. (Sorgi I would worry about) I thought Saturday declined last year but I think he made the pro bowl based on reputation alone. I hope he is okay and it’s minor but if not we move on. Yes his knowledge of the offense is huge but Manning can deal with it. He probably already is. (we still don’t know the extent of the injury either) We several guys who can play center. And they might know enough after this offseason.

Our o-line suffered last year IMO because the interior of the line was pushed around like a rag doll and that includes Saturday. The guard and center play was not good. But, I felt Ugoh played great as a rookie.

All the D lineman will be fine when the season starts. Most were sit as a precaution anyway.

same

Not worried. Manning makes us a SB contender again and he is fine.
Mudd is the best o-line coach in the league IMO and will have a good line ready week 1.

Injuries are part of the game and if you look around the league right now players are dropping like flies.

Lombardi wrote in a way that he couldn't be wrong

Again, go back and read the report. It was so inspecific as to be impossible to disprove. He never specified what the ‘second surgery’ was. Again, I ask now as I asked then…Is draining a knee a surgery? Is it a procedure? He said Manning was having trouble with swelling (an almost self-evident fact from that type of surgery). He said the Colts were hiding the severity of the injury. I have yet to see any evidence of that. Manning is back practicing on time. If he shows up practicing tomorrow and plays in the Chicago game, I think we all have to conclude that Lombardi was full of crap. Not in the sense that he had facts wrong, but in the sense that he stated them in the most negative light possible to create a story where there wasn’t one.

If Manning misses a game, then he’s vindicated. If he doesn’t, he was splitting hairs for the sake of creating a stir. I don’t consider that ‘being right’ or a sign of good reporting.

On This Subject...

I here ya screamin’ Zombie. I read all of your pieces (highly recommend everyone else does too) on 18to88.com and agree with you on every point. There is still a lot of scenarios that are “up in the air”, as it were, concerning Peyton and his ability to perform at his highest level. Even he has said that without practice throughout the preseason, it is difficult to be his best. So, Lombardi may have, as of today anyway, a 50% chance of still being correct. I don’t like it anymore than you, or any other Colts Fan, but we do need to be realistic until that first game against DaBears is actually played.

Why would Manning

Deny it OR say it is true?
Keep quiet. The less people know then better.

And Manning said today he expects to be ready week 1.

Best news ever. 4 to 6 week recovery and guess what? It’s been 6 weeks. ;)

Lombardi on Peyton-Follow Up

FROM MIKE CHAPPEL OF THE INDY STAR… He’s back. And not a minute too soon. For Manning, it was a significant occasion, performing all of those practice basics for the first time in a full-team setting since undergoing July 14 surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his left knee. Manning moved effortlessly and threw with precision, just as he had in countless other workouts before the surgery. It was the latest step in a rehabilitation process aimed at having him ready for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Chicago Bears in Lucas Oil Stadium. The clock is ticking. The opener is 11 days away. "This is a significant step (Tuesday) for me to be out there on the practice field," Manning said prior to the afternoon workout, the first 30 minutes of which were open to the local media. No players were available after practice. "If things go as we hope they do and expect they do, then I definitely see myself practicing full time next week and playing against the Bears. "Every day you hope you’re making progress and you wake up the next morning and hope you still feel good. So far that’s been what we’ve been dealing with." Manning said he might be in uniform for Thursday night’s preseason finale against Cincinnati in Lucas Oil Stadium, but he isn’t expected to play.

After reading Mike’s article this morning, the key statement directly from Peyton Manning is that he feels like he is "making progress" and is not hindered from swelling in his knee. The critical part of any knee injury is rehab, to avoid a setback after a heavy work out. The next two days will be a crucial time in his overall progress. If Peyton can go out and practice today, even if he does not do very much, then he is on the road to playing against the Bears. He is talented enough and smart enough to get caught up with the offense, but the Colts will need to make sure he has the foot quickness and lateral movement to handle the speed and velocity of the game.
