Jets supposedly trade for Favre
How does this affect the Colts? With Favre, the Jets are a better, and thus make the AFC East (which has New England in its division) that much tougher. The Colts do not play the Jets in the regular season this year.

Well… I’ll assume that Favre will make the Jets significantly better and put them squarely into the number 2 spot in that division. Making life tougher for the Patriots is never something I will frown upon… although I will always frown upon any scenario that doesn’t put result in the Patriots and Colts squaring off on the way through the AFC playoffs… PERIOD. How much better will the Jets be with Favre? Hmm… tough to say. They’ll be able to run the ball better, so long as the Jets pass protection is worthy, because Favre will cause defenses to respect the pass. They’ll definitely see an increase pass offense production. I’m not sure where they stand defensively, last I heard there were big holes still. Either way, they’re a LONG shot to make the playoffs in the AFC with the Browns, Steelers and Jags all in the way. If they should make the playoffs, chuckle I’ll like that matchup should we cross paths. But yeah, it could make life more interesting in the AFC East… which is worth praising.
As for Green Bay, this is the dumbest move I’ve EVER heard of. EVER. And the fans will let the front office know about it. You don’t turn down Manning, Brady, Marino, Elway, Montana or Young if they want to return to your team after reconsidering a retirement. You just don’t. And hell, that’s for any team in the league. It’s only worse if it’s Green Bay… Favre is easily the most loved person in Wisconsin by a HUGE margin… amongst ALL people in the country… let alone the state. So… yeah… airhead move.

This trade changes nothing. The Jets went from a 6-10 team to a 9-7 team. They’re still not making the playoffs. Even if they do, who wants to play through the Murderer’s Row in the AFC? Potentially having to face San Diego, Indianapolis, and New England in consecutive weekends? What sane person would want to put themselves in that situation?
Realistically, making the Super Bowl in the AFC means beating a minimum of two of the top 3 teams in football. And even then, you’d have to face another top 10 team in the Super Bowl.
This is just sports media hype. It doesn’t change the playoff picture. The Jets still suck, they just suck less with Favre.

Playoffs
I think this makes them a playoff contender. The Jets had already made themselves better in the offseason with the signing of Alan Faneca and Calvin Pace. Also, they got who I consider to be the best TE in the draft with Dustin Keller. Favre to Keller could be a pretty sweet combo this season.
90 percent of us would agree that the Colts, Pats, Jags, Steelers, and Chargers will come be 5 of the 6 in the AFC. I don’t believe that the Titans or Browns will compete for that 6th spot like they did last year. I say the last spot in the conference playoffs will be between the Jets and the Texans now.

Colts, Pats, and Chargers I’d pencil in as locks.
Jags could regress, but I still think they’d get the first WC spot. Steelers weren’t that great last year. Browns could push them for the title. Titans are okay, not great.
I’d consider the Texans and Bills dark horse candidates.
That last spot could be a toss-up between the Bills, Titans, Browns/Steelers, Texans, and Jets.
It’s a tough road to the playoffs in the AFC, and tougher when you actually get there.

My take
The Jets will gain an additional 2-3 wins this season just because they have Favre. Last year, the QB position killed their season. You must have an elite level QB to win in this league now. Favre is still a top 5 QB, even at 38. As Monkey Business eluded to, it is not like the Jets have lunch meat at the WR position. Coles is solid, Cotchery is very good, and Dustin Keller is a Dallas Clark-like TE. Add to this the improvements along the o-line and Thomas Jones, and the Jets now have a very good offense.
Without Favre, this was a 6-7 win team… maybe. With him, we’re talking 9 or 10 wins. If the rest of the team can play near his level, and if their defense finds itself, this could be a good team. I’m one of those wackos that believes Mangini is a pretty good coach.

The Jets Will Make the Playoffs
They are two years removed from a playoff team that still has a lot of the same players.
If the Jets had Favre last year, they would have won a few more games, including the December Patriots one.
I like Thomas Jones at running back. He is way better than people say he is. He had over 1,000 rushing yards last year playing for a god awful team.
The wide receivers aren’t great, but Favre doesn’t need great wide receivers to win games.
The offensive line is tough. Mangold, Ferguson, and Faneca are all very good linemen.
The defensive line has Kris Jenkins and Shaun Ellis now, so it definitely has improved.
The linebackers are pretty weak.
The defensive backs are getting better with Revis, Carroll, Rhodes and Smith.
I think this team will win 10 or 11 games and make the playoffs. I also think they will beat the Patriots in Week 2.

"The wide receivers aren’t great, but Favre doesn’t need great wide receivers to win games."
Last season no QB had a higher percent of his passing yards from YAC. YAC is consistent year to year with receivers far more than QBs. Favre made his resurgence back into being a top 5 QB by cutting down on the picks and getting tons of help from his WRs and OL (lowest adjusted sack rate in the league).
The Jets had two good linemen last year, just two good linemen gets your QBs sacked 53 times. Now they have 3 possibly 4 (they signed 30 year old ex-Pats and Lions lineman Damien Woody to play RG) So protection could remain a problem.
He’s going to a new system, with a worse supporting cast. The Jets will be better (hard to get worse from 4-12) and the playoffs aren’t impossible, but I expect them in the 6-8 win range.
