How good was Big Ed really? Your opinion

I write this merely to assess what the team has lost; did we lose a potential Pro Bowler, a good NT, or merely an adequate big body?

Was he ever ranked with other NT starters in the league?  What did the critics/experts/scouts say about Big Ed?

Was he great on the run or pass or both?  How did he rate as a pass rusher?

What do you folks think?  Would it take a first-round pick to replace his caliber of play?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

He wasn't as good as McFarland

if McFarland hadn’t blown his ACL Ed Johnson would have been just great depth. I never really saw much from him pass rushing, but he held the middle very well against the run. He started every game on the top scoring D in the league so he was obviously a good starter.

Matt Miller (New Era Scouting) had him ranked 33rd in DTs with a 7 of 10 grade. That puts him as an almost exactly average starter.

I thought it was ACL but I'll look it up

Ok

It was petalla, but a lot of blogs and message boards were called it ACL so that’s where I got confused.

Ed was good

I think he could have developed more as time went on, but right now he does plug up the middle pretty well. He needs to work on getting penetration. I can’t imagine some other team not taking a chance on him – he proved that he could play at an NFL level and stay out of trouble for at least ONE season.
That should be more than enough for the Bengals at least.

He seemed to be competent

He didn’t stand out as either a great player, or bad player from what I saw.

And that is probably a good thing…

ej

was a cancer and constant discipline problem at penn state. as a fan of the colts as well as a nittany lion alum, the colts are far better off without him than with. to put it into perspective, ej was suspended for the entire 04 season because of legal problems, and left off of the OB roster because of legal trouble. Polian made the right decision, and his replacement will be far more formidable.

For the glory

FILE - In this Sept. 4, 2009 file photo, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill aims a pass downfield against the San Diego Chargers during the first quarter of an NFL preseason football game in San Diego. Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder. Head coach Mike Singletary largely chose Hill based on his play down the stretch last year: he went 5-3 over the final eight games and he also owns a 5-0 record at home in Candlestick Park.
