Let me start off with, Buster Davis and Melvin Bullett, two of the best football names in the NFL are on the Colts roster.  Cool.

I have been a Colts fan since ’84.  In 96 I moved out to phoenix AZ for a more active life style and a livelier job market.  Most folks out here are transplants from another state, and keep their allegiance with their hometown team.  The last few years I have been attempting to get to know and figure out the Cardinals.

They kind of remind me of the Colts back in the mid and late 80’s.  Lots of in fighting, most of the players bring up their personal goals, first before mentioning any team goals.  It seems to be a “me first attitude”.   They have a quarterback that has been quoted “They (the cardinals) should live and die with me at QB” Matt Lineart.  It’s believed that the coaches are ok, but, the ownership and GM are not.  One thing for sure Rod Graves is no Bill Polin.

Rod Graves is the GM for the Cardinals and responsible for drafting Buster Davis.  At the time, he had just hired a new coaching staff headed by Ken Whisenhunt, a former Steelers coach, and a guy who likes a 3-4 defense.   Graves kept the previous Defense coordinator, Clancy Pendergast, who happens to be a 4-3 defense guy.  Clancy decided to run a 3-4/4-3 hybrid defense.    He had LB’s ranging from 220 lbs. all the way to 265lbs.   Even now their roster looks like their trying running two different types of D.   

When Graves drafted Davis, I was not happy with the pick; he just didn’t fit a 3-4 defense.  The coaching staff was not happy either.  There was not much talk about him during training camp, but, I did expect him to make the final roster, he was a 3rd round pick, and they only had 5 picks in that entire draft.

After they cut him, Graves gave a statement to the press indicating that Davis had showed up to camp out of shape and was lazy.  Then they tried to sign him to the practice squad.  He was not having any part of that and ended up signing with Detroit’s practice squad. 

That’s the whole messed up soap opera of Buster Davis and his AZ Cardinal career.
