Now what from the Pats this year?

I for one am not celebrating the injury to Brady.  I've torn my ACL and it SUCKS!  And whoever wins the Super Bowl this year (whether it's us or anyone else) will face questions because they didn't have to beat Brady to do it.

But, his unfortunate injury will allow us to observe a once hypothetical scenario of where the credit lies in the Patriots success: Brady or Belichick.  It might also suggest who in a vacuum is truly the better QB: Brady or Manning.  We still won't be able to play out who would be the better QB if they changed teams, but we'll be able to see if a guy who has never thrown a college or professional TD pass (until Sunday) can lead the Patriots to the playoffs.  I think we all know where the Colts would be without Peyton.

If the Patriots have a dismal season, it will indicate just how important Tom Brady is.  If the Patriots can catch lightning in a bottle twice with another unheralded backup, it will indicate that Brady is the product of Belichick's system and isn't as valuable as he is made out to be.

It might be a little hard to tell with their ridiculously easy schedule.  I can't see them being much worse than 7-9 (They still play the Dolphins twice, 49ers, Cardinals, Raiders, Rams).   If Cassel can lead them to 11or more wins my opinion of Brady will change.

Any thoughts? Predictions?

Brady is more valuable now than he was when he was first inserted into the lineup. The Patriots have a different game plan than they did then. Plus, their defense was a lot better. Back then, all he had to do was not lose the game for them, but now he’s a more integral part of their offense. I don’t think we can properly assess his value to the Patriots simply by comparing how well (or poorly) Cassel (or whoever lines up at QB) plays. At this point in time, Brady’s their MVP, not an interchangeable part.

I’m more interested in seeing how Randy Moss assumes leadership of the team. I have always thought he is a pouty, whiny player that didn’t deserve to play for a good team since he was lazy when he played for a bad one. I’ve heard the stories about how playing in NE has changed him and how he’s a team player now. This is the time to prove it.

It sounds like you expect the Patriots to be bad. I don’t expect Cassel to lead them to 11 or 12 wins, but what if he does? I agree that the Patriots are much different then they were when Brady took over. They rely on him much more now than they did then. Their game planning will inevitably change and it’s not a perfect scenario, but it’s the closest thing we’ve had to evidence one way or the other.

the Pats are finished, stick a fork in them

you can’t replace Brady with Cassell and expect to win, just won’t happen.

If Manning, Sanders eventually shake off the rust, Colts are still the team to beat in AFC.

From Simmon's Brady Injury Mailbaf

Q: I am giving this Cassel dude four weeks. If he doesn’t get better, I’m gonna jog through my routes and stop going over the middle. Cool?
— R. Moss, Foxboro, Mass.

SG: Just kidding. I wrote that one. But that has been the underrated part of Brady’s injury — the Pats didn’t just lose Brady, they might lose Randy Moss, too. His track record of quitting on bad quarterbacks is both extensive and frightening. I don’t even want to talk about this.

When people like Simmons talk about how much the injury scares them

It brings a lighter side to a bad incident. I hate a lot of Pats fans that roam the internet. The Colts get a lot of grief for no reason. I feel sorry for the intelligent Patriots fans, but the fans who are hypocrites and keep the pumping in the sound rumor going can all go to hell for all I care.

Randy Moss

I think the point about randy moss is the key one in how well the pats do. If he doesn’t get along with cassel, or doesn’t get to be the big star if they have to dumb down the offense and try to run more, he will quit and this team will be toast..

An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...

I love how quickly he pre-emptively

threw Moss under the bus after Moss was a good teammate and amazing player who allowed the Pats to go on their historic run last year.

Moss really took

those unexperienced QB’s in Oakland under his wing.

Seriously, the Pats are going to be pretty dysfunctional without Brady…give it time they are going to crack.

don't worry about it

I was tempted, but just like not watching ESPN I’m learning not to beat my head against the brick walls of stupidity in the NFL discussion world.

Troll

Don’t let the little man from the little commonwealth of New England get to you ,after mid way through the season all you will be hearing from them is, I want my Brady back but hey your Brady can’t come back he’s layed up with a bad wheel.

By the time Brady milks his injury Moss will be gone too for not getting all the attention like he had last season and not being able to get along with Cassel.

Questions

All these questions are making the Patriots season pretty interesting to watch. Will Moss get all whiny or will he rise to the occasion? (I could care less about Moss’ history, btw. He wasn’t coached by Belichick) Does Cassel get hammered or can he become a serviceable QB? One thing for certain, there’s less of a margin for error with the defense. No offensive cushion to cover up potential problems. Bend, don’t break my a$$.

I think the Pats will make the playoffs and find it pretty amusing people are writing off cassell. Did the same people write off the Pats/Brady back in 2001? Warner and the Rams in 1999?

Fact is Cassell outplayed Brady Sunday and he still has moss and welker and a good OL. Unless they start to suck he should do fairly well and so should the team especially since they have a lame ass schedule. I could see them getting 10 wins without problem.

We shall see how he/they do Sunday. ALl I knwo is I will await mroe play from him before acting like the team is done.

As for the moron trashing Peyts and blaming him for playoff losses, especially last season- I didn’t know Manning plays defense and I didn’t know throwing for 400 yards, 3 tds was not enough to get your team a victory. I am sure you will bring up the two INts which were caused by the receiver not catching the damn ball.

I guess though Brady led his team to victory vs the more depleted Chargers team the following week when he threw 3 INTs and had a horrible game compared to Manning’s. That was all tom but peyts having a great game and them losing was his fault. I also guess it was Brady who choked away the biggest SB upset in history, right? I am sure though you’d argue that away and say it wasn’t brady (which wasn’t all him..IMO) and was other players on the team. How about the Pats loss to the colts in the afc champ? That was brady choking it away too, right?

The stupidity of fanboys amazes me….the sad thing is these people will be stupid and actually think they are being logical.

I find it really amusing

that you’re comparing Brady and Warner to Cassell, I guess you didn’t watch him play in preseason.

Of course he looked good Sunday, he came off the bench and was running on adrenelin, its a different story when you know you’re starter and teams can game plan against you.

Cassell stinks.

I think you may be right, Terry.

Cassell looked pretty bad in preseason. We’ll see what happens. One thing is for sure. If he is half way decent, he can’t be compared to Brady now, but by Brady of ’01. I do think Belichick, much as I hate him, is smart enough to engineer wins with his personell. And the schedule is pretty soft. But Cassell is no Brady.

by coltsfanawalt on Sep 10, 2008 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

anything about Cassell – didn’t have that game.

You response regarding the comparison between Peyt and Brady is dead on. Thank you.
