Assuming this is true, it figures the year that everyone thinks he’d return is the year he’d retire.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft a stud running back in 2009 so I can tell you I told you so.

"Sources" always release info before official announcements...

So it is undoubtedly true. It will be a sad day when Tony is not on the sideline coaching…

As a Bears fan coming over to this site, I hate to see Tony go, and can only hope that his good buddy Lovie Smith can have half of the success that Tony has had. Truly an icon of the game, and he always represented what the game should be known for…

Also, anyone else think Peyton will be coaching on the sidelines one day?

I think it’s more likely he’d go into broadcasting… but who knows?

Yeah

I get the feeling that Peyton would get fed up with players that don’t eat, sleep, and breathe football very quickly, but I could be wrong.

I seriously hope he doesn’t become apart of the media. I lost a lot of respect for Marino (my favorite QB aside from Peyton) when he joined CBS. :(

I don’t see Peyton being a coach or a broacaster. He’s too legendary.

Classy On The Field, Classy Off

The NFL is a better place with Tony Dungy. The man, however, has a higher calling and feels he can make a bigger impact on the lives of young men by leaving football. That makes the world a better place.

Wishing Dungy nothing but the best and congratulations on a wonderful career!

Change

I don’t like change. From ready Glazer’s piece, its as though he feels the Colts are very stable right now. Coaching, QB, Front Office…maybe if he waited another year that wouldn’t have been the case.

I will miss him on the sidelines and in interviews. He was always so unflappable. Definitely the picture of grace and dignity.

I think its good he will get to be more of a part of his son’s life. I think that’s important.

Great Coach and an even better human being. I wish him the best.

ESPN is reporting it as true ...

although nothing is “official” …. it’s all over sportscenter right now and (obviously) Tom Jackson and a reporter from Tampa Bay both said amazing things about Dungy and his career … and then they had Tim Jennings on the phone and i couldn’t understand a word he said ….

Merril Hoge is even saying nice things and calling this a sad day, and truly it is …. both an amazing coach and an amazing man is stepping away from the game

Best wishes for him and his family

IF this is true

Then the NFL lost one of the good guys today. I am a Titans fan, and hated facing this man on the other sideline. However I view him as one of the best EVER! A great CHRISTIAN influence in a league with too many Pacman’s and T.O.’s! He will be missed by everyone.

My favorite Dungy moment was him kneeling with his team to pray moments after winning the super bowl! That is the definition of CLASS!

You will be missed Mr. Dungy!

Dungy got screwed in Tampa

But rewards always come to those who wait.
Dungy’s Bucs won the super bowl without him in 2002-2003.
He came to the Colts and showed what an impact he can have on a football team.

Good luck Coach

Sometimes I suppose one has to follow one’s calling and call it quits when you can still walk away on top. Yes, a 12 game win season is still walking away on the top. SB’s are overrated :D
Good luck Mr Dungy in whatever lies ahead for you.

I can only hope the culture, class, diginity and success Coach Dungy helped establish with the current Colts franchise remains for many years to come.

What a great man, on and off the field. Can’t wait to see you inducted in the HoF, and also can’t wait to hear about your accomplishments in your next career.

i'm cautiously optimistic

caldwell has been groomed by dungy, it’ll be a seamless transition,
he’s familiar with the players and the systems in place.
there will be no shift in philosophy,

what the colts need most is for polian to have a hell of an offseason

So I don’t expect things to really be effected too much by this change…at least not in the short term.

Its been a good ride Dungy...

Thanks for helping on getting that Super Bowl for us fans.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Jan 12, 2009 1:25 PM EST reply actions

Is Tom Moore next?

Considering that Dungy and he go a long way, is he considering retirement next season maybe after another OC is selected? I don’t want to sound pessimistic but I don’t think Peyton will pull a Favre and play till his arm falls off. He’s savvy and probably wants to make the transition from student to teacher soon. But heck I wouldn’t want to play for the guy, given his reputation for being a perfectionist.

Polian

I think Polian might actually be next to go now. I’m not saying he would pull the plugh this season, but he’s ready to retire.

i think Polian just signed a new contract extension last year or the year before, don’t think he is going any where any time soon.

Perhaps more important than coaching success

Is the fact that Dungy is a geninuely good human being. In this world in general, it’s a lot tougher to find these people than it should be.

Wish nothing but good things for him in the future. Thanks for making the Colts a contender and all you’ve done for the city of Indianapolis and the NFL Tony.

I know what its like having a HOF coach retire from your favorite team…it really sucks.

Caldwell definitely has some big shoes to fill.

I’m kidding.

Not to change the subject, but it looks like Jones may be getting fed up with the sideshow in Dallas. They may actually play up to their potential next year.

I for one

Am not sad to see Tony Dungy leave the ranks of NFL coaches, but that’s mostly because I support another team in the AFC South.

However, speaking as a fan of the NFL and football in general, Tony Dungy is a fantastic human being, a great coach and a true role model. The NFL will be worse off for not having him on the sidelines.

Best wishes, Tony. Good luck in your life post-football.

Good luck next season, Colts fans. You have a good team, but it’s a tough division out there.

Man

Im going to be thinking about this all day.

It’s going to be a rough day when we realize what exactly we lost in Dungy. I’m not saying Caldwell will be bad, your guess is as good as mine, but in 20 years if we go 6-10, we will be all nostalgic. “Remember the good old days with Dungy, Harrison, Manning and all the other good guys? Those were good times.”

Bummer

Sad to think of the Colts without Dungy. Funny, I have been a Colt’s fan since 1962 and it is hard to remeber all the coaches they have had since then. I don’t think I’ll be forgetting about Tony anytime soon. He’s right there with Ewbank and Shula as far as I am concerned. Good luck and God Bless, Tony.

Thanks Coach

You are the greatest coach the Colts could have asked for, and you made the Colts into the prestigious team it is today. We will miss you coach. Here’s to one of the greats.

In only half a decade we will see him in Canton. I can’t wait to see him there giving his speech. I only hope I’m in the audience to hear.

Not For Long

I think he wil retire 2yrs tops and go elsewhere I think he wants to be in Fl where his house and familiy are whish we could get a coach that will peyton air it out compared to the 2004 season games are almost boring someone with a coaching style of Bobby Bowden that would be the colts of old that I miss soo much
